@sanniepstein4835 yeah. Because the cows are crappy mothers. And because the calves would become sick because they produce too much milk. If they left them with the cow there would be a much higher death rate due to neglect and scours. How many dairy farms have you actually been to?

That's what i thought. I don't really understand why they breed with animals when there's a genetic condition already.
@kouhai2456Ай бұрын
@@nemogris7748 Corkscrew hooves are very easy to keep in check with regular trimmings, and it won't cause many, if any, issues that way. Think of it as a human having bunions. It can be painful, yes, but it's not any reason to prevent someone from having children. As long as the cows are healthy otherwise, there's nothing to be worried about.

@@nemogris7748there's nothing that's been done regarding testing to know if this trait is genetic or not
@AHunterInTheShadowsАй бұрын
@@nemogris7748There's wild animals who get this just to point this out. Happens in the wild. You can try to prevent but it's just something that's passed on, not comfortable if it gets bad, but as long as there's ways to get it taken care of, they're fine. If not, they're picked off. Also, some of these conditions develop later on so it's not like they were born like that. And sometimes it skips a generation or two. It's just really sad to think that people assume that some of these problems are only in domesticated animals.

A guy exhibited his polled Hereford bull at our fair one year. Im from the western U.S....The bull was big as a feight car & (apparently) very friendly. Hed give people rides & all he wanted was cookies & neck scratches. You do have to be careful around anything that big, but he was a cool guy...beef breeds are genrrally nicer than dairy bulls. Dairy bulls have quite a reputation for being nasty...

Nate, have you ever seen cows or bulls that are kept as pets? I guess what I’m wondering is, the bull seemed very calm and nice, would that be because of the way he’s been treated? When I lived in the country, my neighbors had cows. One was more of a pet, the others they raised as beef cattle. I live in southwestern Pennsylvania. I’m pretty sure I remember them having their cows hooves trimmed. Thanks for your videos. I like your friendly, easy going way with the animals.
@ahwell9984Ай бұрын
From someone whose farm family lost a neighbor to a kindly treated, docile bull: you ALWAYS have to be extra careful around bulls, no matter their breed or how calm they are. Bulls keep being bulls, and that means sudden changes of mood, unexpected aggression, and tremendous power.
@Ecf6336Ай бұрын
And sometimes it's the friendliest ones you most have to watch for. These are massive and powerful animals; an overly affectionate bull who just really wants attention can break someone's ribs shoving them up against something. One of the first warnings I got working around cattle was exactly in reference to that; a bottle raised bull who had almost sent his owner to the hospital completely by accident.

I would not have guessed that hoof trimming for cows was even a thing, much less a career. It is pretty interesting. Nice that folks can help the animals. What would happen to similar ruminants in the wild if they had a hoof lesion? Seems like they would become lunch for wolves or lions or whatever apex predator in the biome.
