Thanks Nathan for your good work in showing these essential Muay Chiaya principles. When I first started muay thai years ago I was lucky enough to learn a 'full' version. And we were lucky enough to know some of this. Simple and effective. And Gross Motor Skills too!

I always thought mauy thai was a effective form of self defence but todays muay thai is more of a sport but mauy chaiya is more about the street.Very easy and effective love the drills please give me more.

Happy to help, it's worth talking about. It's no surprising that you've seen similar techniques elsewhere, even with different uses. Thadmala is one of those swiss army knife moves that fits into lots of different situations - it's one of my favourite entries and counters. One of the details which is often forgotten is the guard hand, but it's sooo important as a backup... and it can be then used to follow up. Joop Sawg as a cover up works, but nothing compared to using it with the P.Liam ;)

Thanks a lot for the information. I asked partly becuase I've seen Ajahn Burklerk Pinsinchai using a block similar to Thadmalaa to great effect both as a block and to time parrying to a counter. I've also seen Aikpracha Meenayothin using Joop Sawg, but as a guard when going in for a straight knee. I can't wait to train again, esp. thadmalaa against a hook, genius!

I've been scrolling through your videos with interest, and have decided to start training the footwork and kicking you show to see what it adds to my existing skillset. Having trained in various styles including Muay Thai, I was really surprised to see a lot of what you show has strong similarities to Okinawan Goju Ryu, especially the blocking/parrying techniques you demonstrate here. I know a number of Muay Thai guys who tear down the Okinawan arts yet have limited/no experience or understanding of them, while I have been blending OGR with Muay Thai for a number of years, and have ended up mirroring what you demonstrate here. I never knew there was a 'rising forearm block' in the Thai arts, (Beurt) although I am surprised I am surprised come to think of it. There is nothing new under the sun, especially in practical fighting arts for actual combat. Would love to train in Muay Chaiya when the world opens up again. Thanks for your vids.

That's great to hear. We had an Okinawan karate student in Baan Chang Thai years ago, he arranged some Okinawan weapons practice with was very interesting. If be interested in how it goes, but be careful mixing with other MA, as much of the style works best when using it together (Yang Sam Khum and Phlik Liam is essential) so that the body mechanics flows and generates the power correctly. I do online classes if you get stuck!

I'm starting to take classes for muay thai but it seems like muay chaiya is what i want to learn because it seems to be more for the streets if im not mistaken. im beginning to realize that the style im taking is meant for the sport but that isnt why i joined. i live in a bad area so thats what i need it for. would combining the defense of muay chaiya and the attack of muay thai be possible? is there even a big difference in the two? any info would be great. thanks

could this amazing blocking system also function well in Muay Thai with a modified P. Liam?
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 11 жыл бұрын
Please remember that these are the basics of the style. Think of the movement taught in these early stages as the outlining of the Mua Chaiya framework. Once you feel comfortable, you can adjust things to suit your personal style more. Be careful though, as changes usually come with advantages and disadvantages, experience and practise will teach you these. In this case, be careful of shifting weight, as it can mess up the flow of the Plik Liam and your follow up movements...

You're welcome! No yeah, I understand. I use to film edit as a hobby, and a movie that was suppose to be 5 minutes long would take days of editing, hahaha. That or I just wasn't very good at it. Anyway man, take care; train hard and train well.
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 11 жыл бұрын
I think it could, but the P.Liam is an essential part of the system, and you could then loose out of the wider range of techniques and flow of the whole system. The P.Liam works the way it is because of the way that you utilise the whole of the body in a balanced manner. This is tricky enough when using it for real as it is, changing it may have unintended side effects. Give it a try though, and let me know how you get on!

Hey Nathan, can you use the rear hand of the guard when blocking with beurt? Anyways, beurt it's been the only block that i have to train more to start using it in sparrings, the other kinds of cover/blocks worked really well in sparrings.
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 4 жыл бұрын
Of course! Great if you've been practicing and can use the defenses, good time to start pushing the next level. Executing things like rear cross, hook, and the upper cut with beurt is especially satisfying (move in close for proper leverage in delivery) Also, think of the elbows... E.g. Thadmalaa
@clockmakerbr2470

@@nathanbrown19 Thanks for the answer! I've been giving Plik Liam a lot more atention lately, i can see why it's necessary, even more when using Joop Sawg to defend against hooks. I kinda used Joop Sawg against straight punches sometimes when sparring(by accident), but it was more like raising the front arm of the guard, i defended using the tip of the elbow, but i don't know if what i've done is right.

@@nathanbrown19 It's good to see that you are really approachable! I will contact you again when i have more questions (if it doesn't bother you). I'm a Muay Thai fighter here in Brazil, i've been training daily for almost 5 years by now, but i have almost no information here about Muay Chaiya or the other Boran styles in general. I plan to go to thailand, but while i can't, i study and put it into practice. You're helping me a lot!
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 4 жыл бұрын
@@clockmakerbr2470 great to hear! Joop sawg against straights are fine, although the timing is harder than for hooks. You can use the elbow point against the fist with all of the elbows, however, try using it as a parry against straights. It's tricky, but the follow up moves can be VERY powerful (especially if your Plik Liam's good!)
@clockmakerbr2470
@clockmakerbr2470 4 жыл бұрын
@@nathanbrown19 I see, it does make sense to use it as a parry especially against a straight power punch, i think i've seen this in a sparring compilation of Kru Pete from Muay Boran Academy, i will surely try it as a parry. Thadmala is similar to the standard cover in Muay Thai, the difference is the oposite hand position and that there's no Plik Liam in sport Muay Thai. it's really nice to elbow incoming punches with it for sure.

Now what do you do against someone who likes punching/chopping your arms?
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 3 жыл бұрын
The primary usage of these techniques are to slip inside the opponent's attack and counter along their center line. The elbows are counter attacks themselves and bat has multiple follow up techniques. The 'dop hoo' drill shown here is a drill used to hone reactions to be able to defend and counter a variety of attacks. It's not intended that you stand there just defending like in some Kung Fu movie. Counter attack once, maybe twice along the center line and follow with you're own attacks - which could be these same elbow techniques, or any combination of the many Chaiya kick, knee, elbow or striking attacks. Also, the techniques shown here are 'soft' to protect your partner. when used against an opponent, you use the tips of your elbow, or the bone of your forarm (for bat), this damages the opponent's arms... The harder they hit, the more it hurts.

Lol, I did play with this idea years ago, but the problem (which I've noted on another video you've commented on) is that it's easy to promote bad habits/technique with this kind of training. I'd suggest using a ceiling to floor ball for better results, as you can focus more on good technique over trying to hit the ball straight at the wall. I've another idea for you that might help, let me see if I can find the link...

On thadmalaa do you phlik liam?
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 5 жыл бұрын
Always phlik liam if possible/appropriate, ie transitioning between joob sawg and thad malaa with the same arm, doesn't require PL (as its the same side) however, with practice you will see there is still a small part of the PL movement from the body to reinforce the technique. This shouldnt be forced as it can disrupt flow 😀
