Imma be real chief, if a side quest is tied to events in the main story then it makes perfect sense why that side quest would be locked off if you progressed far enough into the main story for those events to change. RPGs do this for immersion, like the world and characters reacting to the order you do things, and having a side quest be available for the whole game despite no longer lining up with the main story would break that immersion.

@NessiahAriesАй бұрын
People who complain about this game's pace don't play a lot of JRPGs, I reckon. They do this pesky thing called world building...establishing it's world and characters before they're getting into the actual meat of the plot, which is something a lot of critically acclaimed games in the genre do (Xenoblade Chronicles 1 takes 2-3 hours before the Mechons show up in Colony 7, Dragon Quest XI takes 2-3.5 hours of your time before the first major plot development happens). I found Brothership's pacing in the beginning to be perfectly acceptable. It introduces it's main group of villains 3-4 hours into the game and then constantly does something with them (unlike DT which introduces Antasma early and then does almost nothing with him for 6-7 hours, until you reach the top of Mt. Pajamaja that is). My only complaints about the game are the lack of Bosses in the middle part of the experience (Ecks and Shun should have had their own Boss Fights) and how slowly you accrue Bros items. But that's pretty much it. Not enough to drop the game down to a 7 though. For me it's an 8. In my overall ranking it's a bit above DT, but still below the first game. Out of 10 I would rank each of them: SS - 9; BS - 8; DT - 7.5; BiS - 7; PiT - 7; PJ - 5 Before somebody gets on my case for BiS: it used to be my favorite, but then I decided to replay it a month ago and found it lacking in so many key areas: tiny overworld (6 areas), overabundance of repeating minigames to the point where the game feels more like a glorified minigame collection than an RPG, way too much stylus and microphone usage. little to no challenge in terms of the mandatory battles, Bros Items that are so overpowered they invalidate all other options (Magic Window & Snack Basket), the giant Bowser Battles are all pretty boring or annoying/drawn out except for the last one. Games main redeeming qualities are it's humor and Fawful, but that's it as far as I'm concerned. Also I think BiS and PiT have the opposite problem of DT...in that they're way too short. 11-12 hours to me is just not acceptable for an RPG. DT overstays it's welcome wheras BiS and PiT imo evoke a feeling of 'wait, it's over already'? SS on the other hand really hit the sweet spot with it's 18-20 hour length back in the day.

@CleaveTheDragon3 күн бұрын
That's probably why you get some of these complaints. Mario RPGs tend to skew towards casual RPG design, ending up being games that are good as gateways to RPGs, but in turn also appeal to people who just... don't like RPGs. So there's something of a conflict there that, as a series of games, it has to keep addressing. If it gets too complex you push away people that aren't into those type of games at all, but if it's too simplistic/repetitive you bore people that want deeper experiences with a Mario RPG. One solution is to try mixing up the base mechanics and presentation, which is why we've had 3 variations on the Mario RPG concept, but also backfires within newer entries because they focus on certain gimmicks that risk putting people off.
@caracalfloppa4997Күн бұрын
I still maintain that BIS is the peak of M&L game design. None of the other games in the series really do it for me. I think it comes down to a combination of fantastic pacing, tight controls with a high skill ceiling (but still easy enough to pick up), and plenty of variation in gameplay (BIS does a pretty good job of alternating between gameplay as the Bros and as Bowser, not to mention all the different minigames). It also has great pixel art (side tangent, but I think it's a real shame that so many games have moved away from a pixel art style, because it works better than full 3D for a lot of games) It's an accessible game that makes it easy to overlevel your way out of problems with fairly minimal grinding, but it also leaves a ton of room for skill expression as well. Is it perfect? No, but all things considered it feels like the most polished M&L game.

Their player peak was a measly 697 players at the same time, and it only took a few weeks before the whole game was taken off the shelves and refunds were given because of the quality. That might've been the biggest flop I've seen in 10-15 years. And they have the audacity to give a game like that a 7? 58:14 As someone who 100%'d the game, your point here just confuses me. If you assumed there was post-game content after beating the final boss, I can kinda get why you'd be mad over this. But since beating the final boss is the literal last thing to do in this game, there's no reason to worry about these quests expiring and no reason to make a big deal out of it also, you WERE going to complete every quests anyways, so I don't know why you're complaining about it taking a long time
@mikeydeez21Ай бұрын
I think people say the story drags at time but at the same time…you’re not in the mushroom kingdom anymore, of course the game wants you to just explore, the battle system is new and I like how the bros work together to make a stronger jump or hammer. Then people complaining about the music and reference how the old games music was better and such. Honestly think this is a bit more picky and not really open minded about a whole new game and fresh story. This game is pretty amazing for a first real 3d m&l rpg game and definitely opens the door for more opportunities in the later. But Partners in time deserves a remake after learning how creepy the game can be in the later play time.

I give this game solid 9 or 8.5 out of ten. With that said though, I think it has some of the best new mechanics, battle system, and world building out of every mario and luigi game. The plug system is amazing and hopefully gets expanded or gets a spiritual successor in the next game. As for the ost, it is a good soundtrack. Yes yes, yoko isn't the composer, but ignoring that, and judging the ost on its own, its a fine lineup. Only the lighthouse boss theme made me hesitant. But then I considered the context, this is a milestone of the game, and the bros are on the cusp of making a new breakthrough in their journey after the boss. And no enemy prior has been able to stop them. If anything the theme is the mario brothers theme. At least in my interpretation. It is the most "Mario and Luigi" sounding track in this game imo. Overall i think the soundtrack is in the middle of all the games in terms of ranking. Because while I would say the quality isn't as great, the music captures all of the themes it is meant to represent perfectly. Now if I had to critique, the pacing near the end of the game I did get a little annoyed with. But otherwise fine pacing. The game starting slowly and building up is great in my opinion because it lets you get used to the world before it puts you on track to the core of the story. Plus this is a new game for not only new audiences but old ones too, so just savoring the slow pace and enjoying what's going on is great. I will also add this game has a good bit of replayability with everything that is present here. Anyhow, if I had to rank all games including remakes in terms of how much I enjoyed them: Dream Team Brothership SS Remake BiS and BIS Remake on the same level SS Paper Jam PiT I want to replay brothership in a month or two to see how it holds up if you know what to do. Plus to do the alternate choices that you can.

You hit the nail on the head there. IGN has a lot of different people doing reviews, and what the reviewer says may not be what everyone there thinks. I highly suggest checking out the Kinda Funny review video for this, as it's less a review and more of a detailed discussion about the game. Their video also has the IGN reviewer as a special guest, so you get a more thorough explanation on their thoughts about the game.

interesting part bout brothership is a complete no gear challenge, which includes the run down boots and run down hammer which can be unequipped similar to DS BIS and partners in time. and I can confirm Jump/Hammer only is completely possible w/a few exceptions, it actually makes Brothership very challenging even when leveled, its one of the most fun challenges I've had across the entire series of doing Jump/Hammer only w/Partners in time being the exception(possible, but become a tas at elder shrooboid.) as both bros will be 1-2 shot(Mario) or 3 shot(sometimes Luigi) minimum w/absolutely no gear and the game has a DS BIS level scaling for having no run-down boots/run-down Hammer equipped. Glohm bowser interestingly, will never get enraged if you just don't use the Luigi Logic the 2nd time, and the airship actually helps you deal damage to him. Glohm Sharp-Cask is deff the tankiest boss w/the Jump/Hammer only restriction, taking 1-2 hours to beat, but I can confirm it is possible to beat it Jump/Hammer only via attack boost+Double Spike ball, even when it heals 420(average), or 840-near 1k hp due to brothership's speed stat mechanic being exactly like paper jams. as for a challenge w/plugs, banning healing plugs is deff fair-game, as attack plugs are deff hard-required. if attack plugs were banned too then Attack boost+Waitaminnit technically can deff be allowed, cuz those, under challenge rules, are literally just an extra Jump/Hammer w/no real benefit aside prob saving 1 turn. the mario and luigi games are deff simple on paper, yet interestingly, the games are legitimately only easy because we make them easy via usin all the tools each game gives out. but its when you remove what makes them easy like bros attacks and equipment/gear that make the games actually pretty difficult, and can change the perspective on some bosses. its legit a very fun way to play them all. 🤔 I'm deff curious how a minimum/low level run of Brothership will go for sure, esp against the glohm bosses, but I deff know plugs will be hard-required for bosses like Sharp-cask and even certain forced encounters in the game

Side quests work similarly in Xenoblade and Dragon Quest. Since story events create massive changes to the world or make certain NPCs unavailable for periods of time.
@MarioandsonicFan123Ай бұрын
I think those side quests being limited kinda makes perfectly sense story wise because these side quests act as bonus of the overall plot point in game...if you are too far in game and the side quest of the earlier plot point being expired makes a bit of sense since it wouldnt make sense to do side quests of the earliest plot points suddenly if the characters and story are moved and conflicted with climax of the story
@cosmicsvidsАй бұрын
Yeah but a lot of them could just be part of the main plot plus i don't like the fact that this games is loaded with side quests which are mostly filler and drag the games length out previous mario and luigi games did have them but only a few. I don't like side quests in general since most of them are just fetch quests or just backtracking to areas you have already been. Thats kinda the issue they tried to put modern game design in mario and luigi and it just doesn't work that well.
@MarioandsonicFan123Ай бұрын
@cosmicsvids well side quests can be a good thing actually..because it shows how the developers cares about the story of the game and their characters and therefore expanding the games plot so that plot invested fans can enjoy but I agree...the game didn't needed that much side quest as some of them felt like missions like sonic forces type of missions..but some of them felt like the developers truly liked the characters and wanted them to expand their personalities....but at end of the day...yeah the game didn't needed too much side quests that half of them were just missions and others were to expand the characters...they should have let the story type side quests in game while the missions didn't needed to be there

Honestly, IGN's review is not far off from how I feel. It should be rated higher, but I would say a 7 for me. It was different in some ways, but it was almost the same as I felt. The lack of unique puzzle solving, several instances of repeating dialogue and dull jokes that got old fast, and how they used Luigi as a NPC instead of an actual player character. The game did do Boss Battles good and some of the islands were good (like Fire and Ice at the same time, a tropical dance hall, business building, etc.) but many just feel like repeats of standard Mario worlds (sand, a solo fire island, an ice island, grass island, etc.)

The problem here is there is nothing to do while you wait, no minigames, no Bro trials to test abilities, no reall good excution of side stories since they don'y even exist in the beggining to be something you can do, like character interactions on the ship that would expand. You do nothing but looks at it, not much an interruption or hope for other than waiting for nothing, they really made this a fill in mechanic to go with the name, just failed to actually achieve anything at that point they could've just had levels be how they noramnly are, things on screen you teleport to no time required.(this sucks because it removes the point of the name but atleast it's functionally not annoying)

There are some points I’d would’ve agreed with if they didn’t have logical explanations, you made note about the games pacing in the beginning, although it wasn’t really an issue with me given I like to stay in an area for a bit to not only gather resources and collect items I may need, but I also enjoy the grind aspect ensuring that when I face an upcoming boss or challenge, I’m well equipped for it. Not only that but once you collect the fourth island (which doesn’t take that long and this is coming from someone who literally stayed to kill enemies in a selected area several times over) you have the availability to speed up your travel distance with the ship which imo drastically helps when it comes to getting to a new island or islet(In the meantime you could do side quest which occupies a good amount of your time getting to said places, which aren’t boring at all given it adds more depth to the characters being introduced, that’s story building without the game being just linear) . You also point out issues in combat such as the jump attacks being stale and already repetitive, I find that ironic given earlier games like superstar saga has a single jump command action and people find no issue with it (nostalgia factor probably) they actually thought of something unique with the standard jump and hammer mechanics which in no way slows down the battle at all considering if your good enough you could easily counter opponents attacks to deal out massive damage you also complain about them not adding the plug commands in the game sooner when you forget in bowsers inside story and continuing, they also include items which help in battle later on in their stories as well, why couldn’t the same complaint be applied to them as well?, in brother ships defense it came way sooner than its predecessors. There’s another point where you complain about guides and tutorials, which is understandable considering we’re adults but your forgetting that this game isn’t only meant for adults but for kids as well who may not know how certain things work or would visually like to see how an action is applied. The theme throughout the game is consistent, primarily being about plug outlets/ connection cords and electricity as a whole this is ironic given the most loved game (bowsers inside story) theme wasn’t as much in the beginning, what I mean by that is the starting areas of the game is meant to represent teeth (cavi cape and plaque beach) then later on once you reach dimble wood it changes until you reach bowsers castle where it sticks to being fawful theme, the reason as for why I brought this up is to show that although the story was straight forward, there were elements that didn’t make much sense to include when it didn’t really impact the story much other than for pleasing aesthetics. Your free to have your opinion so as I, I’d thought I would share some issues I had with your analysis of the game.

I agree with the criticism regarding padding, but some are just self inflicted. The complaints about the side quests being lost once you progressed through the main story about being warned that it would happen has me questioning "What did you expect was going to happen." THe game thought you could handle it at this point in the story, why not just halt all main story stuff and figure out how to do the expiring sidequests? Also, why wouldn't you just do the challenges as you go through the game? Not knowing about them is one thing, but it's not like the game hides it under a thousand menus. Makes way more sense to find the challenges and play through the game naturally while completing them that way. Especially when the beat X type enemy or get 30 excellent score per bros move is stuff that can be done through normal gameplay so you can minimize late game grinding

I definitely agree with the point of the game's pacing, sometimes an island is easy and short, sometimes it's too long and boring, and having 3 different "let's go to the final boss" was kinda annoying, but it kinda grew on me. There are some parts I absolutely love about the game, especially the end game. The combat was also some of the best if not the best in the series, and while I think sometimes the Battle Plugs can be broken on some bosses, they're the coolest addition to the battle system in any M&L game to me. Also, the music's good! I know it may not have the charm as the previous 5, and a couple of songs were just, okay, but I feel like the music was actually really good, especially the battle and boss themes. I also think the final boss is probably my favorite in the series, and while I still think Dark Bowser and Dreamy Bowser are better bosses, I think Reclusa's fight is such an amazing final fight, especially with the cool phases. I also 100% the game and took care of the challenges and side quests as I played, which took care of the waiting for Shipshape to move issue for me. It was fun to 100%, but the rewards weren't really good. I do have a few other nitpicks and it's far from perfect and the best game in the series in my opinion, but if I had to rank it compared to the previous 5, I'd put it at 3rd or 4th. I loved this game, and I'm so happy the series is finally back. I hope that Acquire, if they're not bought by Sony, idk if that's 100% gonna happen or not, can improve on what they did with this game and start their own legacy while being faithful to Alphadream's legacy.

I watched a streamer who absolutely loathed this game. At 56: 20, he said, "Nintendo fanboys will look at this moment and legit call it dark." The glitchy mushroom kingdom right before the final boss is another great example of this game killing the pace to waste your time. Like you already know it's bullshit, so why waste our time with it, Reclussa is such a non-threatening goob.

Their review might have some harsh points but it's largely fair. I even agreed on a lot of points as a diehard fan.

You can say that about Dream Team and Paper Jam and they've got an 8 and 7. Brothership doesn't have DT's pacing issues or PJ's blandness

Why did they remove the B button for Luigi in the combat menu? That was my first off moment playing this.

Okay I just randomly thought of this while playing this game but I NEED Nathaniel to 100% every mario rpg. It would probably take like 3 weeks but it would be good content

I mean, you're very specifically warned about limited-time side quests numerous times, and there's even an indicator on limited-time side quests so you know to prioritize them before advancing the story.
