The reason why it makes you use the propeller box is because the game makes you have the hover for the tanooki leaf, but also senses that you have the box so it makes you propeller since it turns into a normal falling animation instead of a crouched one. It goes like this: Mario: power up: tanooki leaf: jump: hover: is Mario wearing propeller box: yes: use propeller box. And that’s how it works.

2 things you missed: 1. you can hold R to make jr go further and not teleport back 2. If fury bowser is being too much of a pain, you can go to any loading zone to reset fury bowser, making him instantly go back to sleep

Here’s an explanation for why the propeller box works with the tanooki suit but not with other power ups (while crouch jumping): when you use the suit, you’ll cancel out of the crouch jump into the floating, and that will allow the box to work. I know this because it’s the same with long jumps.
