I used to work in restaurants in NYC roughly five years ago. A decent chunk of our staff were Muslim, and every ramadan was a strangely happy time. I didn't know anything about Ramadan until then, and learning from others on staff that even if it wasn't a religious experience for us, they'd still share and openly discuss. I learned a lot about Islam from them, and found it's teachings to not be unlike other religions I've seen/experienced; bad actors produce bad ideas, but there is a beautiful spirit and belonging for those who mean well. one friend at the time, Rajib, taught me a lot about how similar our lives actually were. I miss those days a lot. Whenever they would break fast, they'd have a ton of food they'd all brought from home (always more than enough to share). They would quickly eat and come back to work, and then they made me take a similar break (anyone working restaurants will tell you, breaks are NOT usual). They'd give us full plates of food their spouses prepared, or in some cases they themselves prepared. It was awesome, and hearing from them what a spiritual experience it was to abstain food, water, and watching your thoughts for a month, especially with how important the moon becomes at this time. I miss working with them, but not working in restaurants lol..We even had this one guy, a lawyer that loved the food at the place we worked, who would bring us Halal food after the restaurant closed to take home. It was really inspiring and I vividly remember it as one of the happier periods of my life because of how diverse my day to day conversations and experiences were.

I'm a 19 years old practicing muslim and I thought I could share some food tips for Ramadan to make fasting a bit easier. During the morning meal I try to eat less salty or super sweet things because they can make you really thirsty afterwards. I try to avoid caffeine, fried food and desserts. One of the things that people struggle with the most is Caffeine withdrawal during the first couple/three days of fasting but trust me the headaches will go away. You can avoid that by having your morning coffee during suhoor (before sunrise) but it will make you thirst later in the day. Some food that helps to maintain your strength through out the fast is yougurt, bananas, dates and of course WATERMELON!!! anything that helps you preserve water is great. For iftar (sunset meal), soups are really good. Especially after fasting, something hot and soft is really good for the stomach. I like to have rice and some meat or veggies for iftar but that's just a personal preference. And make sure to have lots of water and juices during the night time if you stay awake! Hope this helps and Ramadan Mubarak!

You emphasised one thing beautifully, and that is that fasting also has a spiritual effect. One thing that is not often said about Ramadan is that it prioritises the soul's health, we often think about our physical and mental needs, but our spiritual needs shouldn't be forgotten and Ramadan makes sure of that: by giving, holding back from food and water, sexual relations etc. you're becoming humble, you become more grateful and you're making time for your soul's needs, you're connecting to your God, the source of life.

it's reliefing to know that you had a positive experience with fasting :) scientifically, when we practice delaying gratification, we become better at controlling impulses and resisting the temptation of instant gratification, the same thing goes for fasting, which allows us to practice self control and self-regulation, our ego weakens due to the feelings of starvation and getting tired from it, so in other words, what fasting does is to "starve the ego, feed the soul"

As a 15-year-old devout Muslim, it really warmed my heart that you've tried out Ramadhan fasting in order to learn about Islam and muslim lifestyle. I want to mention some points you did not highlight in the video. The sole purpose of Ramadhan is so that we may improve ourselves, build discipline, do good deeds and get closer to god. That is why all muslims are commanded to fast so that we may learn the value of food and abstain from other activities so that we may train to not give into our temptations and impulses. We are also encouraged to pray extra and recite the Quran more in order to get closer to god. I've been fasting 30 days each Ramadhan since I was 13 and I find it very easy. I simply drink lots of water and eat clean and healthy. Oily, sugery food, and binge eating are the roads to hunger pangs during the fast. I personally conclude that fasting during ramadhan properly, following the advice and lifestyle of the Prophet (pbuh) leads to discipline and mindfulness. It's somewhat like a dopamine detox. As a muslim I invite you to learn more about Islam from proper sources. And yeah Nathan, I love your content. Been watching you for almost 3 years and you have helped me a lot. Love from Bangladesh!

@Miss Sunrise Hi I'm a 19 year old devout muslim and I would love to share some KZbinrs/channels that I love watching! Jay Palfrey: he travels around the world and interact with multiple cultures while also enjoying Islam is many places. Yahya Buisir Vlogs: BEAUTIFUL vlogs, I highly recommend his videos they're so well made Yaqeen Institute: a one stop shop to learn a lot about inslam from a Dallas, Texas institute There's also LOUMED and jasmine and dawoud, two channels of Muslim couples sharing their daily lives

@Miss Sunrise @Miss Sunrise Yusuf truth is a great Muslim self-improvement KZbinr like Nathaniel Drew. He focuses in Islam quite a lot. However, I have not watched many if his videos. Mufti Menk and Nouman Ali Khan are great scholars who have videos of their talks scattered around KZbin, a lot like Jordan Peterson. FOOD: I generally eat Kebabs of various sorts with flat breads; I rarely ever eat rice or fish, despite being a Bengal. I also personally dislike other Bengali dishes. Another thing that I do is, I do religious fast (from dawn to sunrise) on Thursdays and Mondays, and on the White Days, the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month (Hijri). I only allow myself to eat unhealthy surgery items such as doughnuts on Fridays. That's what I eat.

@Miss Sunrise During the morning meal I try to eat less salty or super sweet things because they can make you really thirsty afterwards. I try to avoid caffeine, fried food and desserts.
@abbdu_nasri2 жыл бұрын
@Miss Sunrise stay away from carbohydrates and use other sources for calories ( you can try a kytogenic diet ), it helps with keeping insuline levels low thus being less prone to hungriness throughout the day. as for hydration, try eating fruits that contain lots of water as they body tends to consume them slowly along the day (compared to normal liquid water) and stay away from salty foods (in contrast you can try foods with potassium like bananas to balance the sodium). fasting is very benificial to us and we dont need a lot of food to survive dont forget that! a lot of people associate this month with food but that's not right. we stay away from all trivial things while getting closer to allah. we dont need a lot to survive.

Thank you for sharing this Nathaniel Reminds me of how beautiful it was to see Muslims in my high school come together to break their fast. Though I’m not a Muslim, they usually invited me in and it was beautiful to be a part of it. Also, back when I was much younger, my family will prepare a full ram and share it with Muslims in our neighborhood to celebrate the end of the fast, I enjoyed those times. Guess I might revisit that🤔.

Watching this video and the proper representation you made of this holy month was really conforting. Being a french muslim, the political context we are in - and that I think you are aware of - constatly revives sterotypes towards us and our daily rites, specially on medias and among politicians. Seeing someone who genuinely tries to understand the spiritual reasons of fasting, when you receive on a daily basis downgrading clichés about your identity, is uptlifing and gives a little hope

I started fasting in this way before I became "officially" Muslim over 30 years ago. Thank you for doing this (and to be political for a moment, the video is well timed to ensure Le Pen's defeat! She would have made cultural tensions much worse in France). I do think the miracle of the Quran is central to Ramadan, and I don't quite get that from your video. That said, the Quran is not always easily understood (though some parts are much easier to "feel.") I would recommend a book that I just started to read, which is not designed to convert anyone, it's called "If the Oceans Were Ink." by Carla Power. And by the way, I like your choosing your own form of five times a day meditation, though some Muslims would insist on the arabic prayers and traditional forms, I find your approach quite sincere and beautiful and therefore valid. May prayers be answered!

First of all well done for immersing yourself in different experiences and cultures. To me as a Muslim Ramadan is the slowest month and also the most memorable month. Your body slows down, therefore time slows down or at least your perception of time . You quickly get in touch with your body and thoughts and sometimes that can be difficult. The best way to get out of your own body and thoughts is to do things for others. I always cook for my family in Ramadan and it makes me and them really happy 😊. Thank you again for doing this.

Ah I’m a sucker for challenge videos, especially when they have so much purpose behind them. Crazy how something as simple fasting throughout the day forces us to be present in everything else we do.

As a viewer who loves the videos you make and thinks that you’re an intelligent person I’ve always thought that so many of the things you say and the content in your videos relates so much to Islam and I’ve always wondered what if you knew about islam, and this video proved that because you honestly saw beyond just fasting from food and trying it for 7 days, and what you said at 7:46 is exactly what I meant. I hope you were able to take some of the things that you gained from this experience to implement in your daily life, us Muslims consider Ramadan as a way of recharging/reflecting and a reminder of why we are all here in this world. This was a beautiful piece :)

The most significant teaching of Ramadan is to get familiar with the life and problems faced by the less fortunate and can be considered a test of ones faith in terms of how faithful they are in hardships, like If they are deprived of basic nessecity like food which unfortunately many are.

I know not everyone would dare to do this. Shows your honesty and unbiased nature. And yes you cracked the code, don't fill up on IFTAR, eat well on SUHOOR. And yes WATER! Water is your friend, I keep tabs on how many glasses I have gulped till Suhoor.......Ramadan is a spiritual detox...You enter into Ramadan as one person, and leave as a much better person. I don't know if you noticed that while you are fasting, you are so much more calm, you want no DRAMA....

I just came across your video, I clicked knowing how qualitative your videos are. I'm Muslim and I live in France.. you can't know what I felt seeing your smile, your will and your patience because Ramadan allows you to evolve or cultivate these two qualities. It felt good to me, it warmed my heart. living with this video you must have realized the family values added to this blessed month. You were with an African family too, the best haha (I'm Tunisian for my part and I also live with Senegalese). I'm happy and reassured to see that you were not educated, nor surrounded by Muslims and you found a lot of wisdom in them. You respect us and I respect you for your gesture. I hope that life (or god, I don't know if you believe in it) will preserve you. NB: your accent is perfect, with your little expressions haha it's absolutely cute.
