You're right about wide gap hooks. They are the worst for hookups. But I do recommend a different hook than the screw lock. Use a straight shank that has a keeper barb on it. I use a 4/0. The hook point is pointed upward at an angle thru the fluke. It gives you a direct point into the fish when they clamp down. Hookup ratio goes way up. My clients don't miss too many fish. Just another trick for those learning. There are a few other things you can do to help the action as well, but we'll let you figure those out. Tight lines!

You got that right! I quit using EWG hooks many years ago. Too many lost big fish and I also switched to the Owner srew lock hooks. I've always done real good with the weighted version when fish are more bottom oriented!

Awesome content fellas I switched from a EWG to a Owner twist lock hook on my flukes and my hook up success went up at least 25% first time out and the number of fish that once hooked got off using EWG hooks went down to almost zero I catch bass in all conditions all year long now since I started fishing weedless flukes first time ever back in early April Great advice really flattened out my learning curve fishing soft plastic flukes

Flukes have worked amazingly for me in freshwater and saltwater, anytime of year. I've fished Lake Hartwell for many years and yes, the bass go crazy for that white fluke. It looks like the blue herring in the lake. In saltwater the Snook, trout and Redfish viscously attack it! I exclusively use the Gamakatsu’s Superline Offset Shank EWG Work Hooks in red and have never been disappointed. I use a loop knot and thread the fluke on weedless, slighty hiding the hook tip. I learned this from a pro tournament fisherman. He also taught me the retrieve to make it dart up and down and side to side. I target a spot and rapidly cast and retrieve to tease them up and chase it, them throw it back and slow it down. It's perfect for this type of wide coverage and fish finding.

For Flukes in general the hooks I've used for years is the owner brand, or mustad weighted twist lock. The weight is on the shank which you can adjust how the bait falls. I mainly used these for flats fishing though. What i would usually catch was spotted sea trout on a zoom flukes in the Houdini color.

The 6th sense flush is the best fluke on the market. When rigged straight where the hook point sits in the fin, as it falls when not twitching it, it shimmys like a senko does. So you can just dead stick it like a weightless senko or wacky. I rarely even throw a senko anymore because this bait is my confidence bait. The flat sitting tail helps it shimmy, and side fins keep it straight up and down. Also, it makes an incredible chatterbait trailer, the tail flings around everywhere, much more movement than a regular fluke. The flush has filled more limits for me than any other bait. Its won me more $ in kayak tourneys than anything else.

Have you tried the Strike King Caffeine Shad. It out fishes the Flush for me. It's heavier and has that Senko action like you are talking about.

My favorite retrieve is rip it about a foot and then let it fall for 2 or 3 seconds. It's a slow retrieve but it always works and I put a split ring on my screw lock hook. It seems to give it more action and it makes the bait sink more head first but not in a drastic motion like a nail weight or texas rig. It also works really good on a Carolina rig too.

Sometimes the best way to fish it is literally walk the dog topwater presentation. Great lures, true classics. The other important thing is simple nose hooking on a weedless wackey hook, that can do wonders, on small space, dropshot or unweighted.

My secret to this bait is in how you rig it.. I use a 4/0 Gamakatsu Skip Gap hook. The bend in this hook helps the fluke stay rigged straight and makes sure your getting the best possible running bait. Trust me.. give them a try!! Their sticky sharp too!

I agree the fluke is one of the best and hook type is very important when setting the hook. However, I respectfully disagree with how you are rigging the fluke. First time I started using the fluke, I would rig the hook the same exact way. It resulted in a hit here and there, but very inconsistent. I did not feel like I was getting the hits I should have. I decided to flip the hook around and the results were amazingly better. With the hook resting inside the groove on the side, I felt like it resulted in better bait action and the hits and catches were significantly more. Also the bass would hold onto it longer. I always encourage people to do what works for them, but what works for me is opposite of what you are doing. The twitches and pauses vs the faster darting twitches on the rod solely depend on what the bass are feeling at that time. Sometimes the quicker darting action works, but the slower methodical twitches seem to work more often. Good luck on your adventures.

In freshwater I use 15 lbs braid with a 10 lbs flouro leader. In saltwater, 15 to 30 lbs braid with a 20 lbs flouro leader. I used to use mono in freshwater but it has too much stretch. Braided line is no stretch and more durable.
