I watched this video yesterday and really enjoyed it. Great job! I've had mine for just over 3 years. I am NOT mechanically oriented... at all. Thank God I don't have it as my daily, although I know others locally that do (here in Southern California). First, people tend to forget that THIS is a supercar! Supercars are expensive to maintain. These cars are being purchased, as passed around by "enthusiasts" who cannot afford the upkeep AND think that the car was designed to do burnouts! Most (not all) early year models have exceeded 175,000 miles. I dare say that anyone will be hard-pressed to find a 2005 to 2010, 200+ MPH supercar (Lamborghini, etc.) with that kind of mileage on the clock. I tend to think that anything derived from Formula 1 specs are probably rebuilt many-times over with much less mileage intervals. Anyway, the car is not for everyone! I was lucky to find a 2010 model that was one of the last to roll off the assembly line before product ceased - BUT, components will wear out and have to be replaced,.. and when they do, your wallet begins to understand just how "special" the engineering that went into this beast really is. Even after 3 years of ownership, I am still learning shit about this car. Pretty soon, these cars will be wearing antique license plates. The best engine BMW ever built was for the McLaren F1. Industry experts say the 2nd best was the S85 that lives in the E60 M5.

Oh, I forgot to mention that last weekend i went on a run with some fellow enthusiasts in the mountains southeast of Los Angeles (and it wasn't my first rodeo). I realized that it was probably going to be my last rowdy romp too! The gang of cars included numerous Audi R8s, Porsche 911 GT3s, Corvette, McLaren, Mustang, Hellcats, and several Ferraris. The E60 M5 (like the Hellcats) are big, heavy cars. They were NOT designed for "canyon carving!" I swear I could smell my brakes about 45-minutes into the chase. As Nathan said, for those that don't understand physics, you're asking for trouble as the power of this car, when combined with the weight, can be deadly (or at least potentially catastrophic to the vehicle). Anyone being negative about this car, must be in la la land with their perception on the cost and maintenance of owning a racecar
@theamerican70804 жыл бұрын
It has to be the most fragile "race car" ever built to justify that statement. The entire car is made cheaply- especially the interior and switchgear, not just a flimsy powertrain. The car may be classified as a "racecar" from a 'street legal' perspective, but BMW knows that very, very few of those vehicles will ever be driven to at that level of performance anyway.
@David-ej1ps4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, people need to understand this is actually a supercar
@ryanmckenna52544 жыл бұрын
@@theamerican7080 racecars break all of the time. Any engine, drivetrain, or suspension that is put under stress is going to fail at some point. My e60 isn't an M, so I don't have the hi maintenance V10, but everything else is about the same; and I have no complaints at 230,000 mile
@oatym8504 жыл бұрын
As a former E60 M5 owner, let me iron out a couple misconceptions. First, this is not a race car. Race car owners expect extremely high maintenance costs because their cars exist for one reason, and that's racing. When you're already spending over $2k on tires for a weekend road course event, that isn't maintenance, it's passion. This M5 is not a race car. It's a high performance luxury sedan with the weirdest, most schizophrenic gearbox ever put in a production car. Those of us unlucky enough to own the SMG version for over 75k miles still wake up in cold sweats thinking about the time the RED COG OF DEATH (google it) left us limping along on the shoulder of an 8 lane freeway in the rain at night. Race cars put huge smiles on our faces. Production performance luxury sedans are supposed to get us quickly from point A to B quickly and comfortably, and bonus points for putting a smile on our face. The E60 M5 isn't capable of consistently doing any of those things at the same time.
@ryanmckenna52544 жыл бұрын
@@oatym850 wre going to have to agree to disagree. Yes it is a performance luxury car. But whatever you call it, it's a high maintenance vehicle, just like any other car in its class. Unfortunately people buying these cars don't understand that. They don't want to pay an expert for the maintenance, and they don't know/want to do the maintenance themselves, meanwhile abusing the hell out of the car. If you think BMW's are bad, then don't think of going anymore expensive. For instance, I've been told that the chassis on a Lotus Esprit has to be readjusted as regularly as the oil has to be changed. I don't understand people buying a special car and expect it to be as simple as a mid range family sedan

So nate, sorry if you've covered this already but what scanner do you recommend for this car?
@theamerican70804 жыл бұрын
If the glaringly obvious depreciation didn't cue you in to the disaster that lies ahead, I don't know what would. I love BMWs, but they are hamstrung by the same financial constraints other manufacturers are, and are forced to find ways to cut costs to keep profits up and maintain an attractive market investment by outsourcing more and more parts, with less and less direct quality oversight. The quality is just not there anymore anyway. The standard has been lowered to the least acceptable levels- in other words, if they can think of a way to build that vehicle even cheaper than they do today, while INcreasing the sticker price....they absolutely will- then turn around and blame the government foe being so greedy.

Sounds like leaking PCV Valve, poor cold start, rough idling

Seems to me if BMW made their cars look better with the hood up, they would have more consumer satisfaction.

I’d sell it to anyone who rolls up with the cash, after that it’s their problem and if they don’t understand what they’re buying then more fool them

Am going to say this and EVERYONE is going to just flip there lid. There is NO!!!rod bearing issues with this cars. The issue was NO ONE WARMED UP THERE CARS! The oil is thicker than honey and people would fire it up and beat on it. The oil could not get between the bearing and they would fail. I have a 08 m5 s85 with 120k and since I've owned it every time I fire the car from dead cold its a minimum of 20min before I go anywhere. Once rpm tach is down to 8500k then its ready to be driven. Watch a video how they start a formula one engine. Then ull see why its so important to warm up the engine to operating temperature before you move it. Then you will never have a road bearing issue YOU! the owner created. The smg i have no problem with it. It shifts faster than I can manually so I don't complain. I do the maintenance and keep the oil level were it need to be and no problems. S85 smiles per gallon. 😁

Buying any BMW is a mistake Maybe if they could make a car that doesn’t constantly leak oil at any given time maybe that would be different

They all have things that need attention - but my E36 325 had a very solid engine 190K Miles when I sold it. Always driven hard in my 4 years of ownership.
@billisbobagis16874 жыл бұрын
Lachee Brun they do, I may have over exaggerated a bit. I had an e46 323i and the car was actually pretty good. But it seems like anything after that just needs constant oil leak repairs, or other insanely expensive for no reason parts
