Hi Roxby Downs, We've consulted with our partner experts from the Cancer Council Western Australia, and they've provided the following advice regarding Type 2 diabetes as a risk factor: There is evidence that Type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer. Increased insulin levels and Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body can no longer respond to the hormone insulin. This results in high levels of insulin in the blood. This can result in an excess amount of Insulin-Like Growth Factor (IGF-1) in the blood; this is thought to stimulate cell proliferation and promote the development of cancer. People with Type 2 diabetes often have the disease long before it is diagnosed and treated. As a result, cells are exposed to high levels of IGF-1 for a long time. People with Type 2 diabetes are also often overweight. These two factors increase the chances of people with Type 2 diabetes developing bowel cancer. Hope this is helpful, Best wishes, APNA
