In the original ending, shown only at screenings, after learning the park is closed, they go to Wallys house and hold him hostage, never getting inside the park. Audiences stopped laughing by the end. So Ramis reshot the new ending you now see. It was done a few months later which is why Micheal Anthony Hall is taller in the ending. Dana Barron (Audrey) looks pale and quiet because as she told it, the reshot was done an a scorching hot day. They had to flim all the rides several times as well as that run to get everything right. It made her very sick which is why you don't see Audrey say or do much in the end.

You have to keep in mind that this movie came out when the majority of the original members of Saturday Night Live were still going strong in films, and that SCTV was just getting started, and this was the first (or second -- Mr. Mom may be the first) movie that John Hughes wrote, so this was just comedy gold.

The four main 'Vacation' films are this one, 'European Vacation' (1985), 'Christmas Vacation' (1989) and 'Vegas Vacation' (1997). Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo are in all four and Randy Quaid and Miriam Flynn (as Catherine - Eddie's wife and Ellen's cousin) miss 'European Vacation' but are in the others. The 2015 film 'Vacation' which you mentioned is kind of a sequel/reboot with Ed Helms playing a grown up version of Rusty taking his kids cross-country to Wally World. I'd say 'Christmas Vacation' is the best, followed by this one but they all have their moments.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003) - TV Movie, Audrey is the only member of the Griswald family to appear, played by the original actress, Dana Barron. This is the only time in the franchise that a Griswold child is played by the same actor. Vegas Vacation (1997) Hotel Hell Vacation (2010) - Short hotel promotional video where Clark and Ellen stay in a tiny, cramped hotel room. Vacation (2015) - Focuses on an adult Rusty and his wife, although his parents do make an appearance. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo appear in every film, except for Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure. Personally, I liked them all, although the first and Christmas Vacation are the best. I've never seen the TV movie.

I smiled when I saw you were reviewing this. It's such a funny movie. Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, and Vegas Vacation is the quadrilogy running order.

A great John Hughes film! He actually did many 70s and early eighties movies, he helped write, he never got credit for.. Animal House, Caddyshack, Stripes, Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, and a few others.

That running scene - it was so hot that 'Rusty' had to go to the hospital after doing multiple takes.

Heard that SoCal was having a heatwave at the time, and that temps in Arcadia (where the Wally World parking lot was filmed, actually the parking lot of Santa Anita Raceway) were in the 105°F range
