It still annoys me, however, that The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" remains MIA from all DVD and Blu-ray releases of the movie (instead reusing the inferior song from Clark's rest stop encounter with the Girl in the Red Ferrari during their 2 encounters on the road). Just spring for the damn rights, Warner. : P

Having just driven from Arkansas to Arizona last month, I can tell you that American road trips are still a chaotic, bizarre, crazy adventure. Stay at the silliest looking motels, eat at the local diners, chat with the eccentric locals and enjoy the beautiful countryside. Anyone who ONLY flies has never experienced what makes America truly great. Every single American should drive across the country at least one time during their lives.

@liverush24 - yeah sure true, I mean the 80s brought us into the modern tech age, but it wasn't overdone yet then, it was the perfect balance of everything then, not old-fashioned anymore, but not over done, over processed, over focus grouped and pop culture had more of a light-hearted fun vibe to it through and through which I think made people a touch more open and friendly back then

I remember those days very well and this movie and song bring back the best memories. Summer vacations every year with the family, before cell phones and the internet, it was Mom and Dad with a map and us kids in the back with walkmans and headphones and our favorite action figures. Parents would load up the 85 Chevy Suburban, bags packed to the ceiling as if we were never coming back or boldly going to a place devoid of modern luxuries, i.e., CVS or Wal-Mart... clothes packed for EVERY season and gear packed for EVERY possible experience, "maybe we'll stop at a random lake on the road - can't leave out the fishing poles and tackle!" and off we went for 1-week in the summer, but by the time you get back, it will have seemed like a year! We stayed in rink-a-dink motels, mostly in the West; Sequoia National Park, Mammoth Lakes, Lake Tahoe, Reno, Las Vegas, Flagstaff down to Phoenix and Tucson. Our television screen was the car window and watching the landscapes change. One time, our tire exploded heading into Vegas (this was before cell phones), so we couldn't just pull over and call a tow truck or open iMaps and detour to the nearest tire shop. No, we had to noisily/drive/bounce 2-mph down the Las Vegas strip as everybody walking around, beer bottles in hand, were pointing and laughing at our flat tire, waiving to my dad as if he had NO idea our tire was shredded. Once we got to the hotel, my dad was able to use the smoke-filled lobby's phone book and pay phone to find the closest mechanic. That was my first introduction to Las Vegas as a 9-year-old. America was a different country back then. When you left the house there was no turning back, you were on your own and anything could happen. Half of the fun was stopping in the little towns and touristy attractions just off the main highways in what seemed like the middle of nowhere. The treasures one can find between destinations was all part of the experience. People actually took the time to pull off and talk to one another; to eat lunch in the shade overlooking some unique landmark., or maybe get to know the family parked next to you. "See that kids! That's the St. Louis Arch. Over 250ft tall and there's an elevator all the way to the top!" "Wow! Dad, can we go up on it?" "No."

I wish they make another Vacation movie. My idea would be National Lampoon's Permanent Vacation. Clark Griswold is forced into retirement by his company but he doesn't have enough money to retire. So he runs for President and win due to some crazy fluke. Once elected, he does nothing except for golfing and fishing and vacationing across the world on taxpayer's dime. He gets invited to award shows and talk shows and game shows. The Congress tries to impeach him because something cousin Eddie had done. At the end he resigns with full pension and goes on permanent vacation. The credit runs and newspaper, magazines all have headlines saying he was the best President ever.

🎉 holiday greetings from coastal Mississippi. One of the best song opening ever. The post cards are now part of history, especially the Twin Towers❤
@sidpheasant7585
@sidpheasant7585 8 ай бұрын
I don't believe all references to the Twin Towers show that people are "in on it". I know that the song "Holiday Road" has divine inspiration from the Holy Spirit. And I know the Holy Spirit also offers the gift of prophecy. Of course, He did not stop the outrage, as it does not work that way. We are supposed to choose to give up evil of our own volition. But one might note that the Towers appear with the name MATTY SIMMONS. The first thing that stands out is the twin letters "MM" and "TT". The movie "Back to the Future" (also a divine feelgood film that some consider to reference the coming events of 9/11) has numerous twin letters like Hill Valley, Marty McFly, Emmett Brown, Lorraine, Biff Tannen, etc. However, here we have the twin letters TT, and even MMI which is 2001 in Latin. If you then take away the letters for AM (morning) and NY (New York), you are left with ... SOS. Brooklyn-Born Simmons led National Lampoon from 1985, though he was with it before then. Ten years before, in '75, a National Lampoon magazine cover (if not faked) seems to show Twin Towers hit and burning in just about the exact right places. It looks utterly like the real photos from that day. Again I insist that there is no need for that to be sinister. Indeed, quite the opposite. The Holy Spirit offers signs through culture (as well as Scripture, nature and rapture). Being Born Again, I see those kinds of signs more clearly now...

Off work early on a Friday afternoon summer of '83. Co-worker and I snuck in a bottle of Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill wine, and a couple of joints....to the 3 for $2.00 movies on 42nd St in NYC (before the perverse corporization of Time Square). What a time to be young!!!!

Catherine Guzzo Why? I've heard similar from Canadians and Aussies that their country is so big by the time you flew anywhere in it you could have gone somewhere interesting. I have never understood why a resident would prefer not to explore the things that tourists would travel around the world to visit. The Great American Family Vacation had roots in the closing days of the so called frontier when there was an awareness that the resources weren't infinite and Theodore Roosevelt created the National Park system, right when people were falling in love with airplanes and cars. There were several hugely publicized cross country car trips when there were few roads and no gas stations. And former WWI flying aces were earning money at air shows all around the country before starting the airplane industry. When the Great Depression hit, many farming families, thinking this was a one year drought, packed up Mom, Dad, and the kiddies and set off to explore for about the same price as staying home and staring at the drought ravaged fields. They camped by the side of the road and got free ice water and clean rest rooms at every wide spot in the road, including the famous Wall Drug. Everybody along the way was trying whatever they could do to woo the tourist dollar: giant statues, strange motels, alleged Indian jewelry.... WWII brought masses of people to the West Coast for jobs in defense plants and it was a brand new world for them. By the Fifties, the economy was out of the postwar doldrums and families hit the road at spring and summer vacations. Baby Boomers famously tried to collect all fifty states or knew which they had missed or how many they had to go. The car and airplane replaced the frontier as a way to escape. We aren't self-absorbed to find interest in a vast and diverse land. I'm just puzzled why that didn't develop in Canada or Australia which are equally as fascinating.

How about possibly this for a title, “CHRISTMAS AT UNCLE RUSTY’S”? Although, Clark and Ellen (Chevy and Beverly) are needed to insure good laughs, let’s say upon finding his son staring at the flirtatious salesgirl, Rusty’s punishment for him is more laxed by having him watch either 1959’s “BEN-HUR”, 1961’s “KING OF KINGS”, or 1965’s “THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD”? Afterall, it’s a better idea for punishment instead of forcing him to watch “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE”, like Clark did with Rusty as punishment for staring at a flirtatious salesgirl? Secondly, for his in-laws, how about William Shatner as Igor, and Delta Burke as Inga (they’re from Ukraine 🇺🇦). As for the neighbors, well, across the street from Rusty we have the Parkers, which includes head of their family being Ralphie. Next door is the son of Clark’s old neighbors, Todd and Margo (probably conceived after their reuniting after New Year’s Eve). Rusty’s wife named Maria (being Ukraine 🇺🇦 by birth) will have to be portrayed by either Lindsay Lohan or Anna Kournikova. Meaning, Kournikova gets it if she’s a blonde like Ellen, otherwise she’s gotta be a redhead 👩‍🦰, which means that Lohan will have to be cast in the role. As to the poultry dish served for Christmas Dinner, Maria prefers roast goose; claiming that turkey is only good enough for Thanksgiving alone. For example, let’s try casting Mayim Bialik as Audrey Griswold (with kids and family of her own that have dropped in for the holidays as well).
