National NC-173 Tube type Ham Shortwave receiver repair tuning dials calibration standby module

Very Vintage receiver with a interesting history. I have always admired National. Had a few as a kid. Always wanted a clean NC-173. I have owned many, but none as nice as this one. Lucky find, from the original owners estate. Came with the original manual & speaker. Problem was due to age, the tuning dials became dark and un-legible. Did a bit of research and found that Radio-Daze makes reproductions on a special order basis. Installation is quite the task. Requires removing the chassis from the cabinet. Lots of cleaning & lube to ensure smooth operation. It is a labor of love. After getting the receiver operational, I installed a 1MHZ crystal calibrator and safe standby switching module. Now the receiver is ready to team up with a classic AM transmitter. If you want either of the modules featured or have questions regarding repair of the NC-173, drop me a line.

I was never that much into Ham radio, but always admired the higher end receivers.. and even pondered buying one for late night listening. Nice to see this example.. and also the receivers that Mr Carlson restores. The industrial art from this era was really beautiful..

You never cease to amaze, Terry! The condition of the 173 is phenomenal. You took this unit from it's reliable operation, and eased it into a modern-day adaptability. The modification(s) were well considered, and executed without compromising the original aesthetic of this National. My hat is off to this endeavor. Nice bit of kit. I have a NC-300 in decent shape, 1954 w/2 meter adapter box and i really liked the vid you did on the one you had on the channel. Thanks for all you're doing. Ill drink to that. Cheers!

Nope, This one is custom designed for the National. Some of the info was adopted from the XCU-100
