Sorry Hannah but can you just clarify Rule 2, I think you may have the sides mixed up, I've taken the following from the R&A website "Boundary objects: When defined by stakes or a fence, the boundary edge is defined by the line between the course-side points of the stakes or fence posts at ground level (excluding angled supports), and those stakes or fence posts are out of bounds." Also when defined by a painted line, the actual line is out of bounds

You are spot on. It is the course side edge. The line and the stakes are out of bounds. See Rules of Golf diagram 18.2a When Ball is out of bounds

Hi Hannah you did a video with David the rules expert a year ago and the line is on the inside of the markers. Sorry. But I still love your videos and content, if I wasn’t such a fan I wouldn’t have known about David.

Hi. You are correct. The inside (course side) of the OB line is the point used to determined if still in bound. Part of the ball has to be inside the boundary line to be considered in play (Rule 18.2. The diagram 18.2a clearly demonstrates what is in or out of bounds).

So I’ve played a ball to edge of green and there is sand on the green. My partner then plays a bunker shot and adds more sand to that already on the green….can I clear? Some of it or as it can’t be determined I get an even worse situation?
@markpogson3799

You are allowed to remove any foreign material from the green. Hannah was talking about being off the side of the green. You can't remove anything between your ball and the start of the green

Would like to see more of this. Can you clarify what happens if your ball is embedded in a bunker face? I've seen 2 different scenarios, one where it had tombe played as it lies which doesnt make sense as can wreck the good work of the greenkeeper and another when it was near the top and they got a free drop
@tiggerhal
@tiggerhal 4 ай бұрын
Cracking question - The differentiation is sand or no sand. If embedded in sand it is in the bunker and follows rules for Bunker (See definition of Bunker). If embedded in lip, wall or face at the edge of a prepared area and consisting of soil, grass, stacked turf or artificial materials (so not touching sand - like you see at many seaside links courses) it is in the general area and you follow embedded ball relief - See Rule 16.3. Also note Clarification 16.3b/1 when spot immediately behind the embedded ball is not in the general area. Also check local rules at the course you are playing for anything on embedded ball relief restrictions.
@stephenbell5026
@stephenbell5026 4 ай бұрын
@tiggerhal my issue was it was embedded in the bunker face by half a ball , and 1 third of the ball was in the sand. Playing as it lies would obviously not only bury the ball deeper but also destroy the bunker face
@tiggerhal
@tiggerhal 4 ай бұрын
@@stephenbell5026 Understood. The principle I guess is the old adage (Rule 1.1) - play the course as you find it and the ball as it lies. The option if not playing it as it lies is to take relief under an applicable rule - such as stroke and distance; relief in the bunker; relief outside back on the line. A tricky one and thank you for appreciating the greenkeepers and their work.

Playing the other day my ball came to rest in front of a small temporary GUR sign. The sign was in line with my next shot. I removed the sign, played the shot, then replaced the sign. Did I break a rule?

No - all good. It is a Movable Obstruction unless otherwise defined by the Committee

Since the sign was temporary and moveable, and was not marking the golf course boundary for OB, I do believe you acted within the rules, Ian. (I follow the rules of golf, but am not a geek-level expert.)

Well that was useful on Rule 1. I thought improving your stance didn't improve the actual lie of the ball. Improving my chances of hitting it better? yes. But the ball is still in it's original place right? Anyway. Glad I never played real competition, I would be penalized all the time :-) 8:35 is a total shocker btw. Nice video!

The playing a provisional when penalty areas are involved can be a tricky one in some occasions. Sometimes you can’t tell for (95%) certain that the ball is in the penalty area and could in fact be lost until you get to the area to determine what’s happened. If you can’t be sure it’s in the penalty area then you need to go back to where you’ve played from. No problem but then you have the pace of play police moaning about 4 hour rounds etc. A provisional ball covers that situation IMO.
@tiggerhal
@tiggerhal 4 ай бұрын
Agree - if not Known or Virtually Certain (95%) - that it is in the Penalty Area (seen a splash for example) then play a provisional - See Rule 18.3a

How is that rule change regarding team events enforced. Most Texas Scrambles are played with only one team per hole. Who is going to check that team members aren’t standing behind putts watching the roll?

Honestly didn’t know it was an additional penalty shot for every two club lengths fron an unplayable lie. Thought it was drop back along the lie for one penalty shot.

I recently played with a guy who moved his ball about, claimed he was a 10 handicap, wouldn’t let us mark his card. Just a casual Sunday game so we didn’t care, at the end of the game he said he had 84, we know he would’ve had closer to one hundred. I checked his online score, he had put his card in as an 83 😂 apparently he isn’t allowed to play in competitions . I won’t play with him again. Why would one do that 🤔 even the pro said he is a bit creative on his card! Sorry, had to get that off my chest 😬 love golf

@@hannahholdenNCG the scores are entered into the system and the cards are left in a box, I doubt they are checked as it’s just Sunday golf not competition. When there are prizes involved I guess winning cards are checked. And he would’ve signed the marker 🙄 Love your channel by the way 👍🏽

Money leagues are not sanctioned by any golf governing authority, so this can be a real headbanger. Talk to whomever runs the league to get their stance on rules infractions. The Rules of Golf are for everyone, whether they be tour pros or amateurs or weekend hackers. Good luck, Keith, and may the Golf Karma Gods protect you!

@@jiml9062 I did mention this in the video, if there are more than one titleist 2s then it can become and issue. Its rare but I have seen this happen. If there are two plain titleist 2s and you can't prove which is yours you would have to go and rehit the shot under penalty.

Aaaargh. That OB advice is wrong. If there's a post or stake then it's the inside (ie course side) that is the boundary. Part of the ball must be TOUCHING the course inside the line. Overhanging the course but not touching is OB. If there's a painted line, on the line is OB. Part of the ball has to be TOUCHING green grass not overhanging.
@hannahholdenNCG
@hannahholdenNCG 4 ай бұрын
Yes I got this wrong my apologies!
@jeffward2607
@jeffward2607 4 ай бұрын
Almost, but not 100% correct. A ball overhanging the course is in bounds - it doesn't have to be "touching green grass". The OB boundary is an invisible plane above and below the ground. Stakes, painted lines and other boundary objects only show us where that invisible boundary is.
