Nakoda and Plains Cree here. My mother was full Nakoda, and my dad is Plains Cree. As far back as I've been able to trace my ancestry, 100% Native on both sides so far.

For those not in the know, Nakoda = Assiniboine. For those who don't know who the Assiniboine are, they're a northern offshoot of the Sioux (Dakota) and the two became enemies. On the other hand, the Nakoda and Plains Cree are traditional allies and were the two most important members of the Iron Confederation. Have I got that about right?

Warriors would dance the night before battle so not peaceful and warriors had a death song and dance. They also had a dance of purity yes and of plenty game. Notice how they are dancing with weapons

In old times, my family taught me our people used a system called "coup." Its where, in war, a warrior would race into the opposing parties positions and instead of slaughtering each other, they would do what is called "counting coup." Its where they would touch an opposing warrior on the shoulder to signify that at any time they could have taken that life. Instead, after counting that coup, that warrior would be honoured for not only sparing a life, but also showing bravery in war.

I learnt this when I was a child, reading Sitting Bull biography. Later I learnt that the Chief called Two Coups, got his name because he used to touch twice the same enemy!

In war, each warrior understood every man involved might have a family to go home to, so if violence was a necessary means to end the issue, then it was used. Otherwise counting coup was a means to spare the life so that man could go home to his family. He may have been defeated, but at least he lived and understood. My great great Grandfathers passed that along to my family who shared it with me. I'm a Nakoda Sioux and that is what I was taught.

This must be one of the earliest film clips ever! I am very interested in the Native American culture, recently I had the start of an idea for a Native American film. It's about an English girl from now who is visiting America on a college trip and she is somehow transported back in time before America had been discovered by Europeans. She meets a tribe, befriends them, learns the language and gives them a warning that her ancestors will come and that they have to escape.

This is not a dance of any true meaning, more like just a exploited show put on to entertain the palefaced ones. But it is interesting to see my ancestors in the late 1800s on video. Sad times, as this was taken not long after the end of the way of life and freedom we once had. This film was recorded only 4 years after the death of Chief Totanka Iyotanka also. I have to wonder if they were forced to do this dance for the camera man, or mistreated before and after there performance. Any real authentic sacred ritual dance of significants would not have been performed for the whitemans eyes to see. Also the whites feared it.

yes i can clarify that. His ppl were only allowed to perform these dances for commercial purposes. Native American ceremonies and languages had been banned by the government and many native ppl had been thrown prison and died there. Ppl like sitting bull did not have much choice. They were coerced into doing shows for Buffalo Bill. SittingBull was actually killed by by reservation police for supporting the Ghost Dance movement in 1890's.

it was a real dance and ur right about Buffalo Bill. Some natives were forced into this after being forced to surrender or they would face jail time. It is a true dance though, they still dance like that today. I've never seen it on film though, thats freakin crazy! that dance must be thousands of years old. Im amazed.

im not sure if ur making a cheap joke but u know there actually is a chicken dance. Also the crow hop, grass dance, etc. One of the dancers in the video above does seem to have feathers sticking out from his lower back which appears to make him lool like a turkey or a chicken. Maybe thats what ur referreing too. They have many dances that honour the spirit of an animal, planet, season, etc.

Native ppl were not allowed to own their own land either so they were not left with much finacial resources leaving them to be exploited. And TRUE, BuffaloBill was a good friend of the Native people's and experssed his concern for their well-being to the government. He urged the government to treat them well and stated that 'all of the wars the the indians fought was on their own land' for the sake of their ppl and not for greed.

This might not be a true traditional dance, but how amazing to see true plains natives in breechcloth. Dancing so beautifully in such healthy strong lean bodies instead of hollywood where they are always dressed in full stereotypical regalia .They usually show elderly chiefs in movies and photographs. Rarely do they show young strong men in their prime.

I just wish that there was a film directer who has connections with the Native American culture who would take this idea on board and turn it into a movie. So many concentrate on the superficialities of skin color and blood mix,that they often miss the culture aspect.I've been in on KZbin conversations where some NA's were complaining of other NA's dancing their dances."Those Dineh were dancing an Arapahoe dance." Those Lakotah were dancing a Pawnee dance." There's more to this than red and white or Mexican and American.
