The Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish military are proper badass in their own environment. I did several ski trips as a youth with one of their retired marines from the cold war era. The stories of recon ops within a couple of km’s of the Russian borders for weeks at a time and being self sufficient had me in awe of the resilience of these units. This guy never broke spirit during country legs and always had us laughing. Especially having us take part in tai-chi on skis in the middle of a brutal snow storm 😂 The soldiers that operate in and around the arctic circle are a breed apart. Much respect 👊🏻

Ex Norwegian army recon here, those marine recon dudes was mostly beach boys, all can dance in a snow storm, lol. I remember we finally had an one week leave, it had been a long and cold winter with week long patrols, week after week, I had almost 50 outdoor nights in 3 winter months and it was not some luxury 16-men tent with wood oven you see ,marines use. Nope, we had 7-men tent with no heating. I was planning on jumping on the first plane to Oslo, see pretty girls and party for a week. Then two dudes in my platoon ask me to join em on a ski expedition to Svalbard, I looked at them for a split second, to check if they was drunk, they was serious. They had the whole week planned, just take our military gear with us and go. Standing polar bear watch would be business as usual, we was always on yellow alert on patrols, 7 men squad, one on heat watch, two on guard outside, only the squad leader could sleep. For the rest in squad, it was 50% time on watch every freakn night, ave sleep per night was less than 4 hours. It was actually tempting to get 33% of night as watch, we could skip the fire watch and get 6 hour sleep per night. That sounded as a vacation to me. That's army recon for ya, not the beach boys in the marine, haha.

Norwegian here, I'm born and live up in the arctic so I'm used to both the cold and all .. while I was at the army we where manovering around the Lillehammer area, man it was cold there but we camped in these canvas tents and all the heat we had was a tiny primus wich we used for cooking and heating, bathing was done rolling around naked in the snow and rub it in on us... And because I in general handle coldness better than warm weather I was the perfect "list" the guy who sleep at the end of the tent so its the coldest place but also the place with best space, but every morning I had to rip my sleepingbag of the canvas tent...

"Miserable" is the right word. When temperature nears -40C (also -40F), it's usually dry. They're training in roughly -20C weather (-4F) which can often still have a lot of humidity in the air or pushed by the wind. This chills you to the bone. It's fine for a few hours but if you're doing decent physical effort outside for any amount of time, you'll sweat, you'll get wet, and humidity will get to you super fast. As someone living in the North of Canada, fuck Winter 😂

Nice to see Americans training in the Nordics, as a possible Nordic front would likely take place in Finland. Something all conscripts here go through is the "winter course" during the coldest months of the year. Good memories from the first time I got to experience it and all firewood was frozen. It was one hell of a job to keep the fire going through the night. But "issues" like these are encouraged as it only improves your skills for upcoming situations.

Wanna experience a cold hell? Come live in the west parts of Southern Norway. I know it sounds backwards, but trust me. Because of how the fjords face the Norwegian Sea, we get damp breezes all year round. With tall mountains at all sides, it blocks the sun from ever reaching the valley bottom. The result is that effectivly, minus ten feels like minus thirty. Only it is worse, because no matter what you wear, the damp air will get inside your clothing. In-land Norway the climate is dryer, and they can have effective minus 20 and it is no issue. If you doubt me, come and experience the cold hell that is Southern Norway in winter. At least the Fjord bits, where cold winds from the mountains sink down into the valley and mix with damp airstreams from the sea. Forming a foggy, sunless, damp and fucking cold hell hole. And YES, ive been to many places in Norway where it was colder in celsius. Yet in effective minus degrees? Southern Norway is a hell hole. Trust me.

The newer kit will definitely make a difference in defending against the penetratingly icy cold wind that sucks you body heat way. Delivering the snowmobiles by helicopter might be due to very little or no snow for several kilometers off the ocean. It would be very hard for the snowmobile tracks before there is a proper amount of snow. Looking at the scenery it might be quite high up where they can be properly operated as the sides of the mountains are not completely white.

Yo. Idk if you've done it already. I tried finding an english doc on it, but in WW2 there was a sabotage in Rjukan, Norway, called Tungtvannsakjonen - The heavy water sabotage. It's a small, little known internationally sabotage, that was still important for what COULD have happened IF the Nazi were able to do what they tried to do. Cause heavy water was back then something we exported to several countries to use in the production of nuclear weapons The story behind it is legendary in Norway. It's one of those typical insane stories from WW2. Like movie-script stuff. mall team going on what they saw as a one way mission. A small team against a well guarded factory full of Nazis. Rjukan is this small town inside a narrow valley. The mountains go STRAIGT up. This video reminded me of that, as they did it during winter, and soldiers learning how to do warfare during winter, and learning to ski, hunt and survivor out in the middle of nowhere during winter. etc. It can literally save your life. As it did some of the soldier from this sabotage that escaped with Nazis after them. Just because they were typical Norwegians, that could ski better than the Germans and knew how to traverse the rugged landscape. Whether or not you take it on your channel, i really recommend everyone to read about, or try to find the Norwegian documentary with English subs.

Sweden will lead the international NATO troops in the Northern Finland. Also, Sweden is buying new rifles from Sako. Here's some history and couple of older training videos relating winter conditions. Relates also to that SERE training video. Also some NATO history there. The training videos don't have English subtitles, but if there's some dialogue, it's mostly about the weather, orienteering difficulties etc.: "Finnish Long Range Patrols Behind Soviet Lines (’41 - ’44)", "Finnish Airborne HIStory year 1964 m4v", "Laskuvarjojääkärit osa1 Finnish commando school part 1" and "Laskuvarjojääkärit osa 2". Shorter clips about enjoying the elements: "NH-90 ja sissit nauttii!", "Tiedustelijan siirtymämenetelmät | Marssiharjoitus", ""Sissien toimintanäytös 2/09 Kontioranta" and "Finnish Soldier¹ - 14 years later".

18:30 no its not crazy, we have been in more wars than we have been neutral, if you can say it like that. And as a neutral country, EVERYONE is your enemy then it comes to "trust" sure you are friends with other countries around you but as neutral you need to have your own military industry, and due to our low population we had to have a GOOD military. And our military industry is not bad. so i just cuz we have been neutral it´s not like we are some hippies. we know our stuff regarding military defence and production. Secondly our neutrality ended during the 1990is, then we started a "partnership" with NATO, and we trained with NATO, sure we where always the "enemy side" for NATO. So in our Swedish eyes that neutrality ended 30 years ago. There is a lot of information regarding our time as "Neutral" the las 80 years. and how much Soviet Union did inside Sweden to keep us out from NATO. Due to our history with Russia, all 14 wars, we won 7 of those 14. is that Russia has always been worried about a "military Sweden". Sweden are the only country who have held Moscow as a foreign force inside Russia. We Swedes are born with a "dislike" for Russia. it is within our DNA. And i think the Fins have it to, even more than us. But i understand them tho.

Because Norway and Finland boarders Russia, and 80% or so of the Russian population is in it's western region, including it's forces. And because the Norwegians, Finns and Swedes are experts on winter warfare and arctic conditions, being born with skis on their feets. Just like thheir forces comes to the US for jungle and desert training, which Americans are far more experienced at.

Speaking of the weapon mounts on the boats, M134 Miniguns is a new weapon system for Sweden, they will be mounted on the boats to increase firepower(there are a bunch of different procurment projects for the marines), but they could show up on other platforms as well(e.g helicopters). Looking at what Ukraine does, I have been thinking about how they would work for those mobile air defense groups they got working on the iranian drones. It's a whole lot cheaper and more economically sustainable firing 7.62 mm from an MG or Minigun than using missiles, if you have 70 drones attacking your infrastucture and cities every night it will quickly become very expensive if the only way to down them is missiles. Edit: Larger calibres might be desired for that though, the german Gepards has done very well from that I gather, but thats a bit of a different beast.

More like 65% and 35% this year, according to NATO. In comparison, last year Europe was only making a bit less than 30%, despite the USA also increasing the spending from last year, meaning it's getting better. So, it's not as dramatic as you believe, even if it's definitely not nearly equal either. You have to remember, though, that Europe will inevitably have a whole lot of overhead (expenses independent countries have) compared to the USA. The USA is a single country, Europe is a whole lot of countries, so the efficiency in the USA is worlds above Europe.

@@herrakaarme Also lets not forget that US military doctrine is very different. They want to be able to fight a conventional war in any part of the world and thus their military is so needlessly massive from the perspective of Europe where many countries are surrounded by allies and only focus on peacekeeping and other expeditionary force capabilities. Whilst only a few European countries are bordered by a potential enemy and have militaries made to fight a conventional war on their soil or next to their border. Very different needs for each of those military designs

Ah yes, 3 years of your so-called "3 day special military operation" that required you be in Kyiv years from now. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Orc.
