I would say that any country that supports NATO troops fighting in Ukraine, supports NATO troops defending any non-NATO countries simply asks for trouble (including my very own Poland). The only countries that they should keep defending should be NATO countries and ONLY those. I would be ashamed of Poland's interference in Ukraine if the direct war with Russia will ever break out. What's the point of risking it all and trying to save a non-nato country with billions of dollars of our aid if that very same country keeps calling you "Moscow's friend". There is no point!

@@kacperzimowski4626 Nobody is talking about sending nato troops to Ukraine. Its about not showing your hand to the damn enemy. Why would you tell Putin you aren't going to do something when you can keep him guessing, the way he always keeps us guessing? Thats why he drives the war and we can only respond. All we do is talk about what we wont do. If we started talking about what we might do.... he might have to double think things before pressing go.

@@samsungqled1167 pool Baltic countries they forgot who and which country saved them from The USSR. When USSR tanks and soldiers were sent to crush the pro-independence movements in the Baltic countries in January 1991, Boris Yeltsin, then the Chairman of the Russian SFSR (RSFSR), flew to Tallinn, Estonia, to save these small countries from being overrun by the Soviet army. Despite the apparent danger, Yeltsin arrived in Tallinn and signed a joint declaration with his Estonian counterpart affirming the inalienable right to national self-determination. While still in the country, Yeltsin met with Soviet troops stationed there and urged them to disobey the Soviet leadership if ordered to move against peaceful demonstrators. Moreover, when hardline Communist Party leaders attempted a coup against Gorbachev in August 1991, it was the Russian population who flocked to the streets of Moscow and protected the White House, Yeltsin's office, from being attacked by Soviet tanks to prevent the military from arresting Yeltsin.

A factual mistake. Baltic countries did NOT gain independance after soviet Union colapsed. Them becoming independant was one of the reasons Soviet Union colapsed as other countries followed. Lithuanian independance declarstion was made March 11th of 1990. SU stopped exicting December 1991 - 1,5 years later. Yes, many reasons led to SU beeing weak at the time, but still strong factual mistake on DW part.

Something important to know, for all who interested in history and/or support Ukraine: Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus'. Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise. Its name “Russia" received only in the 18th century, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name into the “All Russian Empire” (Russia originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Rus') Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even punished for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and were forced to call themselves Russian. Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'. In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership. “Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village. Moreover, in the Italian sources of the 15th century it is likewise mentioned, that Russia is bordered by Poland to the west, Lithuania and Livonia to the north, and *Muscovy* to the east, further proving that Russia historically speaking, is an exonym of Ukraine, that was stolen by Muscovy. Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!

Great feel good story. I don't think it can be explained in a few minuets. Germany has beach front on the Baltic Sea. They think EU, but you left them off of the list. Why would Russia attack Poland when they could attack other countries on the Baltic who would be an easier target closer to their own beach front on the Baltic? I could only hope the EU would think like the Baltic countries. They get it. And, they have my respect.

Where is Russia geographically compared to the United States? Much further away than European nations. And yet who has contributed more than $75 billion? The United States. And who contributes the highest share of its GDP to defense year after year, with only Poland matching it? The United States. Europeans complain the loudest, and yet do the least for their own defense.

@@MoeHamHead-bx7og South Korea is further away than America, yet South Korea has contributed more than the US. Why is that? Japan contributes more, and yet...? Heck Australia is ahead of America, they are literally on the other side of the planet. And no, many of the countries you see on that list fulfill and sometimes exceed the 2% per GDP minimum. The problem is that America has people like you who don't know what they are talking about, and use outdated talking points from decades ago, from the Obama Administration, before most of them fulfilled their defense pledge. They do now. 2014 changed a lot. Do your research.
