Happy probably survive that explosion cause he built resistance to heat. He might have flew away enough to not be hit critically but he still took part of the explosion. Perks of hanging out and flying around with a Fire wielder. But at least he's not just a cat with wings unlike Carla with Clairvoyance and Lily with Strength Enhancement.

The problem is mashima doesn't even try to explain it. He just showed happy sacrificing and suddenly makes a gag with him surviving the nuke. The whole intensity and impact of this scene had been completely degraded due to this kind of gags.

I am SO glad you pointed out the inexcusably long recap at the start of these episodes. I've been re-watching Fairy Tail alongside watching your reactions, and ever since the start of the Sun Village mini-arc, I've noticed how awful these recaps are at the start of each episode. By this point, I think there have been two episodes that don't even "start" until 7+ minutes in. Add that on top of the (imo) worse/lazier animation makes me feel like the second series of Fairy Tail either got less funding or was made with less care than the original.
