All moa species were only found in New Zealand. They became extinct by intensive hunting. But their Fear instinct was not designed toward all invasive predator like humans, That contributed their extinction.

Given that their natural predator attacked from the air, they really had no need to fear what was on the ground.

I saw that skeleton in London. I wonder if that's the same as on that famous photo of Sir Richard Owen standing next to a Moa skeleton. Btw Moa holding its neck horizontally is sometimes rejected because it doesn't fit the descriptions and paintings by the Maori but I guess if there were at least nine Moa species they could vary somewhat. Or it could do both.

Moas did usual have their neck lowered but they were still capable of raising them up when need be.

Don’t forget, the ancestors of the Maori would’ve seen Moas in the flesh!

@@knightofarkronia9968 Initially European scientists didn't believe that humans and Moa coexisted on New Zealand despite the stories and paintings. And when they receive convincing reports and some even physical evidence that smaller species of Moa may still be alive some scientists prefered to make up a hypothetical new species of giant kiwi. Of course no such bird was real. It is quite likely that some small Moa could've lived until 19th century. As for the Haast eagle although I'm skeptical, two most reputable people possible reported to have seen the bird. One was Haast himself (who also didn't believe that Moa and Maori coexisted) and the other a famous surveyor whose name I forgot. But I think it's doubtful. Maori stories about the Haast Eagle exist but they're sporadic.

considering that eagles preyed on them, giant moas holding their necks horizontally makes a lot of sense

i know right? And i know theyd be wild animals deserving of their freedom from man, but all i can think of is how spoiled a moa would be if i had one as a pet. id so adore having one around i think itd be my personality. like a horse girl except with giant birds and im a boy. Bird boy?
