Art as expression
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely help us along
Well, voter turnout was pretty low and all absentee ballots have been counted. While it wasn’t the song I would have selected, there appears to be a clear winner - Natural Science off of the Permanent Waves album which came out in 1980. The runner up was one of the songs I'd have chosen, so maybe I'll split the ticket.
Rush, on this tour, was the first concert I ever attended.
I think the Guild does an admirable job on the Rush stuff.

Even the songs you don't necessarily think of as super busy/challenging/involved --- ARE. Like, pretty much ALL of them. Sometimes the busy lines don't jump out as much as others, but then you watch it being played/turned up, and wow. They were all truly such wizards. Anyone capable of covering this stuff is great, but the ones who composed it...untouchable genius.

Decades ago I was at a Rush concert. My buddy asked me "If you could hear any song tonight, what would it be?" I thought long and hard and responded "Natural Science, but they'll never play it." Well, I was wrong. They played it! It was amazing! My favorite 70's Rush song off my favorite 70's Rush album! I don't know how you do it, but this cover was amazing!

It's intriguing to watch you play this one because it looks like you're adding in a lot more vertical movement to the lines instead of shifting over to utilize more of the G string. However, having less of a reach in a higher register obviously has a lot of advantage as the fret spacing narrows. Notes and timing - 1000% spot on. Tons and tons of applause for that because his lines are extremely hard to break down to the degree you've done it. Just like your other videos, damn good job! I think Geddy, at least from what I've deduced from live videos of this song, really tries (when possible, or maybe even when needed) to keep it within a tighter box so that he knows where he's at on the fretboard when singing over the lines. I think that's why a lot of what he does makes sense to my brain because I try to do the same thing when playing. The counter effect is that it can make it just that much harder to play because of the reach involved. It reminds me of reading a chart and figuring out the minimum amount of precise movement needed in order to get from A to B since you sometimes can't take your eyes way to look at the fretboard. Of course, there's also more than one way to skin a cat, and you got it done! Bravo!
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure I used to play it on the lower frets when I was younger. I probably switched to the higher frets to - 1. Shorten the stretches (as you mentioned) 2. Get a meatier sound than the G string offered I've always had a natural leaning to take an "economy of motion" approach to just about everything I do in life, just in an effort to be more efficient.

It is hard to believe they are gone. They gave us all they had for as long as they could. People will try to figure out the complexities and intricates of, their music for decades to come. Interesting that you played the Hyperspace bit in the 7th position. I just tried it both there and where Geddy plays it at the 4th, and I have to say it's much easier high up. Hard hammer-ons from 4 to 7 with the pinky relatively low on the neck takes much more effort (at least from me) I've just noticed. I also experimented doing it in the 2nd position and doing pull-offs from 4 to 2 to the open string, and that is by far the easiest, though sounds slightly off since it is a pull-off instead of hammer-on. I'd never really thought about how many different ways that bit can be played until now - I'm usually one to just try to do it "exactly" (ha) as Geddy does in the live videos and not stray.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I play it there because it's less of a stretch and it sounds a bit chunkier. When I first learned it (when the album came out) I played it in the lower position.

I love it! I just listened to both of your cover versions. I think this one is better. But, they're both good. I liked the classic Rickenbacker on the first video. What bass were you using here, I couldn't tell. Rush on... :-P

This may be my favorite of your videos. Listening to the finished video, I like the tone as much as I like your black Spector. However, they both sound like you. (Have I answered my own question [if there is one]?)

Hi! So, we (my son and I) watch all your videos - awesome! Are you reading charts or have you written everything out? Also, your tones are awesome - how are you tracking the bass, di, amp, itb? Finally, looks like you tend to use lighter strings; how light are the strings on the Guild? I notice on a jazz, rotosounds 95 get that geddy growl pretty easily!

How many hours per day you spend practicing? It's very difficult to play perfectly like you do man!! great job. I did a bass cover of this song last month too but is a shit compared to your xD

These days, if I can squeeze in thirty minutes during the week, that's good. I'll usually play for a couple of hours each day on the weekend. When I was young, it wasn't unusual for me to play 4-6 hours a day during summer vacation. I've been playing for a very long time and always try to portray myself in the best light, so don't compare yourself to me. We each have our strengths and weaknesses. I'm sure there are many things that you can do that I can not. Just keep playing.

Hey Troy are you following some sheet music or tab to play this or is it something more basic. The off time riff sections in the early part of this and at the guitar solo are so busy I can't imagine playing this without some kind of guide. Of course you handed it very well and the Guild does hold up well to Rush. This is my favorite Rush song and I have no idea how Geddy plays this bass line and sings the way he does. I can barely keep up with the bass line let alone singing it on top.

Hi Steve. No sheet music or anything like that. I play by ear and memory. I tend to glance about when I play to avoid looking at the camera which leads some people to believe that I'm reading music.

How do you like those short scale vintage Guild basses? I have been leaning more towards the short scale basses myself.........................................Ken

I swear clear of short scale basses because I'm afraid I might get used to them have difficulty transitioning back to a full scale bass.

I have a question: Would you recommend buying a guild B-302? I've recently been given the opportunity to buy one, but I was originally saving up for another bass. Any comment or advice will be appreciated!

Pretty impressive how much your tone sounds like Geddy Lee's. How are you doing that without using his index finger flamenco technique?
@calenlas99
@calenlas99 8 жыл бұрын
The index finger "flamenco" technique is way newer than this album. Counterparts or Test For Echo, mid to late nineties. Before that he played traditional two finger style.
