As you mentioned, covering the black with the red is a problem without completely obliterating the preshading. Preshading works best when the top colors are very thin and can be applied in very light coats. The same applies to black basing. I wonder, if instead of preshading, you could use post shading? I think you would have to start out with a darker shade of the base color and then use the normal base color in order to get the desired effect. I think trying to lighten a base color to get the highlights might look more like fading. I think this technique has potential, but aircraft are displayed (and looked at) in a different way than figures. They also tend to have larger reflective surfaces. So you are going to have the real ambient lighting affect the shadows and highlights as you move the model around. Perhaps in a diorama in conjunction with lighting effects on other objects in the diorama where the effect desired is to control the direction of the lighting. Interesting idea.

Yes it could be done with postshading or both combined. There are lots of possibilities, but for the first session i wanted to keep it simple to keep the focus on the initial idea. I will try to combine the to two techniques and maybe use a more suitable colour. The thing is basically if the Sun has a certain angle, the shadows will fall on the aircraft the same way, no matter from which direction you will look at it. Thinking like this, actually it makes no sense having no shadows on it, except it would be displayed in a hall with the brightest spotlights all around it. But you are probably right, it would look best on an aircraft model in a diorama. Thanks for the feedback!

As a figure painter I’ve looked at pre shading. It’s mostly used with contrast paints which are thin water colour type paints so the technique is a primer, pre shade, contrast and done. With the number of layers that you put down as a modeller and your existing understanding of shade and directional light I don’t think you’d get a better effect using pre shade. It might be a technique for new modellers to help them understand how painting affects the look of the model. Great video though. I think there is a lot we can learn from hobby cross overs. 👍🏻

Youre probably right, but i will still try to take it one step further and combine the pre- with some postshading and weathering and see where it goes. Thanks for the feedback!
