I don't quit a troubled build. I put it aside. Sometimes for weeks, sometines for months. Very often after time passes, I think of a way of re-working it. 👍

Yep. I have found if I start another kit or look in my past kit stash when something isn’t going as planned, I can find something that works. I’ve even used sprue trees to scratch build parts.

Model looks great. I’m one of those guys who when I mess up I smash it against the wall. Now I won’t do that any more and will take it through to conclusion and experiment like you did. Very encouraging. Thank you.

Model building is not like cheering for your favorite sports team. Your team loses you get depressed. Having fun building is a stress relief, working with your hands. Creating a replica of something. Having fun your way. You build it for you, not the world. Paint it pink, white, yellow, just have fun with it. Making a 1\24 airfix P51 D into a Reno Air Racer , Suzi Q, was one of my favorite builds, 30 years ago. Today at 75, I build very little, eyes, hands, just won't allow me anymore.

I don’t ever enjoy failing but I don’t bury my fails in the trash either. 😁 I tend to leave it aside till my frustration goes away, then come back to it days or months later. You are so right, failing is part of the learning process. I also find that thinking ahead reduces the chance of a fail so I don’t rush my builds, even when they are going well.

Very good question. Answering your question, I follow the same route as you, and I fail a lot of times, but consifering the time, the economic invest done in the model, paints, etc., I always decide to press on and drill sone new skills. Have a nice day!

Never. I recently screwed up my Eduard P-400 and through my frustration, continued to mess it up more and wouldnt quit because i really wanted to have it on my shelf. But in the end, it looks decent. Im very proud of the paintjob, and was able to weather it very heavily since the real plane was so weathered in real life. Its the worst model I've built this year, but it was the first and it was only up from there. It was a lesson in building in the end, even if the model isnt the best ive done

I believe the extra effort and hard work on a maybe somehow messed up or very challenging build pays off in the future. As you say, maybe in the end its not the best build but it had hard work invested, something the viewer of the finished model maybe cannot see. Rusty, thanks for your insight and inspiration. I have been building a kit that has warped, missing and poorly molded parts and did I mention flash!!!! So many times I wanted to trash this kit, however I will not be beat by a piece of plastic. The good news is that the kit is finally coming together and it looks OK not great but OK. I build two kits at the same time which allows me a little bit of a break from frustration on one while allowing for preparationassembly,painting and dry time on another. Also I enjoy the challenge of scheduling and organizing my assemblies while having to think of two builds at the same time, try it, its fun!!!!

This just happened yesterday with a decal. Applying the decal and thought it was dry. Started working on the next one. Look at my hands and the “dried” decal is off the model and completely destroyed. Therefore, had to use mismatched decals to complete the build. Live & learn. 😂

I recently learned an important lesson. When I was painting the second camouflage color on a plane, I thought, "This color doesn't look right." Instead of stopping immediately, I pressed on, and after removing the masking, I discovered that my initial impression was correct; the color was wrong. Now I had to remask the entire plane, which is one of my least favorite tasks. The lesson was to stop immediately and evaluate the situation, which in this case would have saved a lot of time and effort.

Yes I am completely in agree. I am having the same experience with an old Airfix 18th century sailing ship: the Endeavour. While I am pretty skilled in the building phase, I am not so good when airbrushing and weathering. I tried to paint the hull and deck after the assembly (being the deck full of the associated structures). I got plenty of overspray here and there. I realized that it woul be better to paint the deck separately. Now I am experimenting whit the precission of my airbrush to correct the overspary as much as possible. On the other side, imitation of wood is another chapter: I have tried with liquid products for wheathering with mixed results. In summary: I am in the middle of the road and I still don't know if I will get a decent model.

I believe if it has minor flaws like some overspray this will not ruin the look of the entire model, if the rest has been done nicely. Flaws can be covered with weathering effects or something can be used to distract a bit from it. And sometimes its crazy how the finishing varnish can unite everything and tone down on some messed areas. Thanks for the feedback!

Just on time! My brother was putting on decals onto a Tamiya Lotus 79,and he forgot to squeeze the air bubbles from under the decals with a cotton swab,but honestly he will just continue the decals today knowing What he done wrong,to make the rest of the model look better!Thanks for the tips ;)

I had a massive failure yesterday. My first every try at doing Camo, after 3 days of painting, masking and painting again. I removed the masking tape and.. NO!! it removed all the paint in loads of places, right back to the grey primer. I was devastated and wanted to throw the model in the bin, but after watching this, I'll go back to it and see if I can make something of it. Thanks

I've had a few that have driven me absolutely nuts. But taking some time off and coming back, figuring out how to resolve the problem (or cover it up) and making it look good when you're done it a great feeling. I had a Corsair I was just going to junk but after a few months of working on other planes, it's probably the one I'm most proud of now 🤣

I would say 3 at the same time is optimal. Many times you have to spray some small things and it's just pitty to get your airbrush dirty to spray few small parts with clear varnish. Same goes with putty - you have to wait many hours for most instances to just clean up excess, while at the same time you can push forward another project: some scratch building or simply putting parts together. I've got 6 atm, 2 of them are stopped because I have to build vacu forming tool to make some progress, one demands some experiments to conduct before priming so currently I am building 3 at the same time 2 of which can actually be finished without issues (one requires vacu sliding canopy at the very end - again need for that tool).

While building Tamiya's Mk1a Spitfire, due to my own mistakes I nearly threw it in the trash, honestly about four sperate times over several months of on and off building. In the end I decided, screw it, ill just do as good a job as I can despite my previous mistakes. It is not exactly how I hoped it would turn out, but im actually pretty proud of it! Adam Savage said in his book, "perfect is the enemy of done". It is a quote beside my work bench and it has helped me a lot.

I will put kits that I get problems with on a "shelf of shame" and wait as long as it takes before the inspiration to solve the problems comes. only yesterday, while looking for some brass tube in my bits cupboard I found some different diameters of it I'd forgot I had, which in turn gives me a way to carry on with a Jeff Wayne war of the worlds Martian handling machine kit that has been sitting on the shelf for about two years now. (although its been being built on and off for possibly ten years at this point!)

The best way of making a good scale model is I believe to fail every now and then Personally, I have been struggling with the Vallejo primers and not getting good results. It’s easy to get frustrated but you’ll have to keep trying. Thanks for a great vid greetings from Sweden.

I had the great pleasure to use a resin ejection seat on a kit, which was supposed for a different manufacturers kit. It was a hellride and almost made me quit. I feel better now, hearing such things can happen to much more experienced modellers as well😄 Thanks for the feedback!

Built a 48th scale Dauntless. ~things went badly wrong, so, excessive weathering applied with putting it in a diorama as the end goal. I did the best rust patches I've ever painted. Even now, 18 months down the line, and I'm still amazed by how realistic it looks. Problem being - they made them using aluminium, which doesn't rust. So an explanation for why the plane is rusty is required and none can be found.

In the beginning it can tough at some points, but as soon as you found your way of handling the airbrush it'll be worth it! Its the AK Camouflage elastic putty for airbrush

I like to display bad kits. Some are old toolings that don't fit together, and do not warrant the hours of cutting and filling to make it good. The model is a testament to the difference between the manufacturer's claim and the reality. Other times it's a mistake I have made, and the kit represents a hurried build. We could turn a mistake into a crashed plane diorama, but that requires scratch building the broken sub-structure and internals, and it's easier to start again.

One man's crappy build would be anothers great build. Bit like me getting a an eight on a par five at pebble beach and Tiger Woods getting a 6 and been despondent. Though point taken. I always try to see a model through to the end whatever the stuff ups. Out of 60 maybe 5 have been tossed..
