Natural workout supplements have been all the rage recently with many of them being quite unorthodox and a bit over the top in some cases! Heather attempts to get to the bottom of this by focussing on some of the more popular supplements out there, along with the research that has been conducted!

I drink dill pickle juice sometimes on rides. I like it as a break from how sweet most sports nutrition is, and it's a good source of sodium, and yes, I'm American :)

Dietitian here: Really important to note with curcumin (turmeric) that to get good results it must be taken with piperine which is found in black pepper. So either make sure your supplement has either piperine or black pepper added or if you're using turmeric in cooking, use some black pepper in the dish as well. Love the channel

I had the thought that just keeping some of these ingredients as part of your regular diet / meal planning could be an easy way to give them a try.

I live in Canada, and pickle juice is a must. I did UTMB, and there were a lot of confused looks when I asked where the pickle juice was. Though over here, we use dill pickles, not gerkins.

I suffer from bad muscle cramps from time to time. I thought pickle juice was a joke until I was able to try it out and relief was instant. More practically, I keep a bottle of Hot Shot, a product made with chili peppers, handy. I wonder if because the taste of things is so bad your body forgets about the cramping!

Nice! I use beetroot in almost daily basis. Cherries or red fruits often. Pickle juice (or small doses of vinegar - easier in my country) as an SOS in long races in case of cramps

In India, we've been adding Turmeric power to almost all dishes for centuries. Its also a natural anti-biotic.

I saw a tv show claiming curcumin in turmeric is thought to be a reason for very low cancer numbers in India. Not getting cancer counts as performance increase in my books 🎉

Antioxidants and anti-inflammatories blunt the training response though when taken within a couple of hours around a training session. I'd only take them pre-exercise for a race, or maybe occasionally if you're feeling under the weather.

I have used pickle juice before. I would mix it with other forms of hydration or sometimes straight. It definitely will improve performance. Though I would say that it shouldn't be relied upon.

Beets work, but I find it better to eat whole beets the day before an event, it seems to stay in the system longer, whereas beet juice is much shorter lived. Just chop them up and steam them for 15 minutes then add them to stir fries, curries, salads etc. They're actually really nice and sweet, not dull and earthy like the vacuum packed cooked beets you can buy!

I don't know how much it improves my performance, but my bananas + cherries + beetroot smoothie with a few ice cubes is the perfect boost before a hot summer ride. I got the bananas, cherries, and beets ready to go, just waiting for that hot summer day. 🙄

I've had great success with beet root juice in the past, and I've found one product that actually doesn't taste that bad.

I've been using beet root powder for a couple years before races. The science is pretty solid on it. I joke that caffeine, sugar, and beet root powder are the top 3 legal performance enhancing drugs. 😂

I’ve tried tart cherry juice, I can’t say it tastes good. I tried beet juice, you have to drink a lot and it does not taste good. I prefer the beet it shots, it’s concentrated and the lemon juice masks the flavor pretty well. Just watch out for a surprise when you pee.

I had a 17 year lacrosse 🥍 player from Germany tell me about pickle 🥒 juice 🧃. Him and his teammates swore how it took away severe calf cramping. So I look at it as a remedy as opposed to a preventative measure
