What's Up Sun Raes! Finally revisiting the Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic. As you know, there has been some controversy over whether or not UFD changed the formula of their Curly Magic Curl Stimulator -- well, I am here to try both formulas and see if I notice any major differences between the two. I hope you enjoy this long and thorough video.
Thanks for watching!

So here is the tea. Tonya Reed is the original owner of uncle funkys. She had her shop here in houston texas in rice village across from where MAC and Sephora are. She went through a messy divorce. He was ring to run her pockets. Flash forward to this new owner who I am guessing in order to remain profitable changes the ingredients on their most popular product the same way alikay naturals did when she launched in target. He lemongrass spray leave in went from having btms and silk amino acids higher up to having silk amino acids be one of the last ingredients and replacing the btms with stearlkonium chloride which is cheap and can be found in sauve conditioners (correct me if im wrong on the btms but i know an ingredient change when I see one). I cant stand a lyin heffa who tries to say glycerin and wheat protein have always been in there but they just werent listed. No heffa you wanna be in target and make money. Well raise the price heffa. Long time followers will pay a little extra for the best ingredients to remain the same. Thank you for the comparison. I no longer buy from ufd

Most botanicals gels are formulated to be applied to soaking wet hair without a leave-in because they do not contain stronger holding agents that can adhere to a leave-in unless formulated to do that. UFD has always been formulated to adhere to soaking wet hair only, even before they were acquired. You are free to check out AshkinsCurls ancient review of this gel before they were acquired. A Botanical Gel has multiple purposes. They encapsulate the curl to provide hold. They contain humectants that ensure that the hair is able to receive moisture (water) from the atmosphere to keep the hair moisturized (water) throughout the week. They aid in detangling and are water loving. UFD still performs as intended as long as it is used as intended based on how it formulated. The hair is made up of protein. It can not be sensitive to itself. Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein is not a protein treatment. It's meant to maintain the structure of the hair hair. I personally don't believe in glycerin sensitivity anymore because that person would need to eliminate all possible contributing factors. Glycerin's job is to attract moisture from the atmosphere. Getting frizz from using glycerine isn't a sensitivity because it's doing it's job. However, I do believe in poorly formulated products that contain glycerin. UFD isn't one of them. The only thing I noticed is that it is thicker and has more slip due to more marshmallow root. It's definitely more concentrated and can easily become sticky if overused or paired with the wrong product. At the end of the day, the only person that knows what the original formula is the hairstylist that created it.

What's the climate where you are?When glycerin is in the first five ingredients in my humid GA climate, those products definitely perform differently.
@nyishaj123
@nyishaj123 2 жыл бұрын
@@jocelyngivens220 I live in Chicago. This summer the humidity was between 70% to 88% and we had a lot of 85 to 98 degree weather. It was oppressively hot and humid this summer. All of my gels I used this summer have glycerin in the top five ingredients list and all of my sets held up 7 days. This is the first summer since I've been natural that this has happened (UFD was my go to gel for the past 7yrs). I've been natural for 11yrs. I was also a huge glycerin sensitive supporter up until last year. Now all of my products that I use weekly have glycerin and I use them all year around. We need to ask ourselves tough questions and we need to be honest with our answers. Did you ever use the gel as intended? Did you use it on shampooed hair? How often to you clean your hair? What is your hair routine? How often do you protective style? Do you have hard water? Did you remove the hard water? How much water did you used? Was the hair thoroughly saturated with the gel? How hydrated is your hair? Which product(s) did you pair it with? Do you have an active lifestyle? Did any hormonal changes happen in the last 3 years? How are you managing your stress? Do you have any health issues? Did you have surgery? Did you have any of the CV-19 variants? Did you color your hair? What was the condition of your hair when you colored it? Did you get the color professionally done? Do you use Henna? What are your expectations for your hair during humidity? How are you managing those expectations? Are you setting the hair to a 100% with indirect heat? A lot of naturals in the past year have migrated to a more simplified routine and fundamental based haircare regimen. What I have noticed is that everyone has had a decrease in frizz and increase in definition. In addition, they have more longevity. All of them, with the exception of those with allergies are using UFD and products that contain glycerin in the top five ingredients. Obviously, glycerin isn't the problem.

@@nyishaj123 We'll just have to put this up to "everyone's hair is different." I'm definitely a simple girl and don't get into all the latest crazes and doing all that extra to my hair - too many steps, and I don't have time for that. Glycerin is in most of my products, and I never paid it attention until a month or so ago when I watched a video that mentioned not using glycerin heavy (not free, just heavy) products for a better hold. I tried it, and it worked for me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ It could be I just needed a balance, who knows.
@nyishaj123
@nyishaj123 2 жыл бұрын
@@jocelyngivens220 I knew you would make that statement "everyone's hair is different." I don't play guessing games. I listen to professionals that have thousands of receipts and that can provide concrete answers. The question I added to my comment are questions that reliable, certified, trustworthy curl specialists ask every natural because they like to have a clear understanding of your lifestyle and your haircare practices in order to diagnose and provide optimal solutions for your hair. They also teach techniques which is the most important skill to have in a haircare regime. You said, "It could be I just needed a balance, who knows." You made a decision to remove almost all glycerine products that are in the top five ingredients from your hair diet without any concrete explanation. No additional question we're asked. I'm not saying that all glycerin based products are amazing because they are not. 99% of products in general that purposely market to our community are poorly formulated. This a sad and real truth. UFD is not one of them. Now, I think we need to be honest. If you decide to wear your hair curly; you signed up for frizz. I accept that. However, I don't accept doing a wash n go and as soon as I step outside my door and it turned into an afro. I did not create an afro. That was 10 yrs me. Today I accept functional frizz because my frizz has decreased significantly. How I set my hair is what it will be for 7 day. Glycerin is not your enemy. Poorly formulated products, improper technique, not understanding products are tools, not being educated on fundamentals of hair and not factoring in lifestyle are your enemy. At the end of the day, it is not my place to convince you of what you believe to be true. I don't like giving blanket response. I'm just stating facts.

You definitely identified the sound difference. I’m not sure if the glycerin side appeared bigger because there is more hair on that side due to the parting but it looked bigger.Beautiful results. I hate how these companies change ingredients. It’s like they say you like our product wait while we change it.😅 The no glycerin side seemed to hang more after the second gel application. The glycerin will make it sticky and the wheat protein thickens. No significant difference in results. I never used UFD but I came across your video and I thought it was interesting.New subbie

Question? How can the products be compared if they are not used exactly how the instructions say use it? It doesn't say to apply a topper gel, just curious?
@NaturalRaeRae
@NaturalRaeRae 2 жыл бұрын
I compared the gels first by ingredients, sight, feel, glide, stickiness, etc. before ever putting a topper gel on. Once I put the topper on, I compared the look and feel, definition, etc. After my hair dried, I compared the moisture, curl definition, longevity, etc. So I covered all bases. I have used this gel in the shower as well, in previous videos, so I even did it as the instructions say. So, in short, this video gives my thoughts on the two versions and they are very similar. The only thing that is different is the side with glycerin is a little more frizzy, but I don't mind frizz so I will probably still use the gel. Thanks for the question.

I did a comparison between the two and the glycerin side was dry and crunchy after the first day. The one without glycerin was defined and was not crunchy afterwards. The old formula is no longer available so I have had to find an alternative. All gels with glycerin high up on the ingredient list just don’t work for me.

@@samiraj.192 the mop top anti frizz gel. It has glycerin in it but not high up on the ingredient list , I do hope they keep It that way. It has a citrus smell also which smells clean. It has really been great for my coily curls. It has been the best gel that I have tried. I sometimes use it with the I create hold as a topper but even when I don’t it works well for my delicate strands. I was hesitate because of the price tag but if it works for me why not right😜

Sometimes you can find the old formula at places that don’t sell high value of products like a Rite Aid Pharmacy or a CVS
