About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.
Music from Epidemic Sound.

Unfortunately Liz. I only spy rats and have had to stop feeding my dear birds, which was my joy. It just attracted them. Please do you know what I can do.

I've had blue tongue lizards eating my strawberries, copperhead snakes going after the frogs but the most exciting sighting was a koala. At first, looking out the window, I thought it was a rabbit and was heading out side to chase it away - then it climbed a tree and I thought - what!!? Yes turned out it was a koala - they are in my area but that was the first and only time I've had one in my garden!!

We built a wildlife pond 2 years ago. Nothing the 1st spring, nothing the 2nd Spring, no frogs or toads or anything. Then suddenly my daughter was sittiing on a tree stump at the edge of the pond this year and spotted movment. We were very patient and it turned out to be a newt! We were delighted. At last!!! Funnily enough when I was a child and lived in south east London we had a pair of lizards in our rockery. They lived under the Arabis plants for many years. Never seen one since, only abroad as you said. How lucky you are Liz!!

Second growing season here on East Coast Canada. I have found 2 small garter snakes in the last week, a couple large toads and some small frogs. I have a salamander that seems to enjoy my unfinished basement. Every new addition makes me so happy to know I am growing an ecosystem, not just a garden!

Wonderful visitor! I enjoy the skinks, toads and small snakes found here (US) as I'm working in the garden. I once found a beautiful little mole king snake, the first time I'd ever seen one. Your new ducklings are beautiful!

That's so exciting to have lizards in your garden Liz, and that's really good footage too. I'm an ecologist and I've handled and counted a lot of lizards over the years but I've never managed to get anything like such clear images as that. We have slow-worms in our garden in Shropshire, which is quite exciting as I'm not aware of any other local populations. We think they were intruduced in the 80s by a wildlife enthusiast who also happened to be a fruit grower, and he planted two orchards here for the previous owner. 35 years later and we still have the slow-worms - and far too many apples 😁

Here in California my favorites are the salamanders and snakes. The only snake we have is a tiny one with a delicate red necklace called a California ring-neck, and it's quite harmless. The salamanders hide under pots and come in two types: the slender salamander looks like a very small dark snake with legs, but the arboreal salamander is larger and is a cocoa brown with creamy yellow dots. They are both very sweet and I always move them to safe places when I disturb them.

We have lots of geckos here in Texas. Sometimes I find baby ones in the house and very carefully I catch them and put them outside on one of my plants. I love lizards and love finding them in my garden or yard. Also like to see dragon flies show up sometimes.

I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mts. Near Yosemite NP in California. We have an abundance of wildlife including; deer, bears, Bobcats, Mt Lions, Rattlesnakes, fox, Squirrels, lizards, and many others. Birds from Turkey Vultures, Ravens, eagles, hawk to finches and hummingbirds. We have a cat rescue and sanctuary. Needless to say, our cats are all indoors with access to Catios so they can safely enjoy the outside.

Hi Liz, thanks for another fab video. Here in Bulgaria I've got a hedgehog that lives in the garden, and we often see frogs, newts, snakes and toads. I love to see wildlife in the garden, to me it represents a great balance, and is testament that not using chemicals allows access to all for a healthy life xxx

Western US Zone 8b here. I've been seeing many baby garter snakes in my garden this year. I'm trying to figure out the balance between letting areas be wild enough to keep snakes and other creatures happy, but tame enough to control weeds and keep me happy!

We have loads here in Kent, mostly they live in and around an old fire wood pile and raised beds! I would suggest putting some logs / branches there maybe with some clean straw in the middle as it is coming up time for them to brumate (reptile hibernation) they love ants especially our wood ants but they don't seem to deter the red and black ants from disturbing omy containers grrr. Most exciting and also disappointing wildlife find was 2 glow worms, Lampyris noctiluca this year last year there were many more. Hummingbird hawk moths, bee hover flies, and every version of shield bugs!

We had to build a barn when we first came here - last year swallows nested in it and they were back again this year. It's exciting when they swoop around your head in the veg patch! Last year we had a grass snake, but not seen this year - hope it survived the awful monsoons. Excited to get a hummingbird hawkmoth for the first time here too. I have seen many lizards sunbathing on a stone wall in Dorset, not sure where but it was on the coast - I was a child then, so it was Studland, Swanage or further round perhaps Kimmeridge/Lulworth. Not seen any since so what a lovely find in your garden. A tip - you can take cuttings of elder and pop them in a jar of water on the windowsill - they take root that way! I'm building up my elder bushes that way.

Oh i am so glad i have subscribed on your website, without the email send by you i wouldnt have even see this video! KZbin didnt showed me anything.. 🤔Well, im late, but im here! 😁 I love all the green in your garden, it is so full of life. Oooh and that trick with fork with elderberries is GENIUS!!! We always just laugh about our fingers being purple/blue for a week after working with them, this is such amazing idea! Im totally stealing it and using it too! :D Especially now, in here (Czechia) we are just now getting all the elderberry bushes all black and ready to process. Cant wait to forage for them, its always fun. This year im planning on doing not only liqueur (we are doing it in this strange strong mix of elderberries, rum and coffee - its real pick-me-up in winter, i can tell you 😆 but for first time i would like to make elderberry jams. I think it could be amazing, hmm. 😋 And so cute that you have new pet, and such a cutie too! Lizards are amazing, in here i usually just see them when they are dead. 🙁 So this is very nice. New companion to help you with pests. And for free!

At my home, squirrels are the bane of my existence, as someone in the area feeds them peanuts, and they've learned to associate human scent with free food. They dig everywhere in my garden that I touch, disrupting seeds, digging up seedlings and generally making a mess. I prefer the birds that come around.
