I love it 👏 really wonderful to connect with nature. I don’t ask people to wait for me on our walks, apart from taking photos, but I’m known to spend hours on a ‘short’ walk because I’m looking at every pattern, texture and small creatures as possible. ❤

Beautiful journal Julia. Yes your butterfly is called the 'Map' in English, we don't get them here but I have seen it in Hungary. The other is called Silver washed Fritillary and the greenish form is called Valezina. It shows how good your drawings are, they are easy for me to identify to exact species. Subscribed.

Lovely sketches, thank you for sharing! I agree that the local wildlife is even more rewarding and interesting to observe and record, this is what is all around us in our daily life, so feels more important almost?! You have inspired me to pick up my sketchbook and get nature journaling again!

Thank you Kathy! Yes, I often take reference photos so I can include more details and color in my finished sketch. Of course it's best to have whatever you sketch in front of you, but sometimes a photo is all that's possible!

I really have enjoyed your sketchbook tours. Do you typically take a water brush w you or do u carry water and use your regular brushes??

Thank you! I always carry a waterbrush with me, and sometimes I bring water+brushes, but more often than not I only do pencil sketches outside and then add color at home - especially when I still have some miles ahead of me. :-)

These are lovely. I would pronounce fritillary just as you did, but I’ve never looked it up. QUESTION: when you make your sketching books, what paper do you use? I have sketch paper, but I also have both hot pressed and cold pressed watercolor paper. I have made my own watercolor booklets with the cold pressed.

Thank you Kim! I use all kinds of paper, depending on what I want to try out and what I have on hand. I currently have one sketchbook with inexpensive sketching paper for journaling, and another one with hot pressed paper for landscapes. When it's full I will add colored paper and cold pressed paper to the mix, just to change things around a bit. :-)

Very nice sketches, your yellow and black beetle is the longhorn beetle Rutpela maculata, a common European species. We have it here in UK too. There is a good website on German beetles here. www.kerbtier.de/. You will find your beetle in Cerambycidae and it is listed under the older name Leptura maculata
