I like how this game actually justifies Joel’s choice to save Ellie because of how much the cordyceps is a non issue in the future.
@philly_sports15583 ай бұрын
Yeah people don’t talk about that enough. The Fireflies were acting like the whole world was about to reach a point of no return and they needed to kill Ellie to make a cure without a moment to spare. Obviously adding to the facts that they had inexperienced scientists, no means of mass production, and a limited way of distributing the “cure” but that’s besides the point. A few years in the future Jackson is absolutely thriving, and there’s probably other cities out there also like it. Civilization was already over at that point in the first place, and the Fireflies seemed to have a god complex in thinking that they could return things to the way they were before 20 years after a zombie apocalypse with them as the leaders. Joel made the right choice saving Ellie.

@StuckDucks Many people, including me, would disagree, I don't know how you would stretch a few days in Seattle and a day of Santa Barbara between multiple games, they even did both sides of the story for both of the characters and it still wouldn't be able to be put into multiple games, it would get very repetitive very fast, they left it at a good point, with Abby and Lev going to where the fireflies are trying to build up and Ellie knowing that Dina left her. The game was amazingly written and shouldn't be looked down upon as the big disappointment of 2020, I have played the game to death with over 26 playthroughs with 18 of those being grounded challenges. I hope you read this and take some of what I said into mind.
@JohnJohnson-fm1gy4 жыл бұрын
@@honestlyowain1121 I mean they coulda wrote it differently?
@plmokm334 жыл бұрын
@@honestlyowain1121 Here's the thing though: In the first game you followed the same two characters without it getting repetitive. When people say that the writing is shitty in this game, they don't mean part II on it's own. If you look at it as a standalone, the writing isn't horrible, it's just bland. The issue people have is that they took established characters and had them do things that they would never do based on what we know of them. They had characters who had no place acting as stupid as they did do so for the sake of the narrative they wanted to tell. I imagine if they made this game as a standalone set in the same universe, it would've gotten far less flak. I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and got your money's worth out of it with 26 playthroughs. However, that doesn't make it amazingly written, or even well written. I've enjoyed the hell out of games that were honestly dog shit. It is possible to enjoy something bad.
@theprowler184 жыл бұрын
@@honestlyowain1121 There are also just as many that absolute didn't like this game at all. Actually, this was literally 3 entries smashed into one. And yes, they need more breathing space for each of the plotlines to be better developed and actually have weight and impact to it. It commits so many cardinal sins of bad writing (from expository dialogue that spells out character development that only matters in one or two scenes, contrivances and bad decision made by characters that go against their established traits or actions, and a bloated 3rd act that goes on for too long and unwittingly thrusts a new enemy group at the last minute, completely does a 180 on its themes in the most incredulously jarring matter, and ends up diluting its point by the very end of the game) that it is hard to ignore the issues upon a second go around. It doesn't help that this game offers nothing after beating it outside of extra difficulty modes and challenges. The pacing was complete slog to get through and I would have had each day back and forth and had the flashbacks be the introduction to the story instead. There is a good story here to tell but the structure and pacing dilutes and kills the emotional impact of those moments that should land.

To be fair to Gears of War, the reason why the characters slow down for dialogue scenes is so the game can load the next area, it's not purely for narrative. Humans are needed more than ever, so children and pregnant women are of extreme importance. So what do we do? Let's just send out a heavily pregnant woman out there, fuck it why not. @spicytoast68903 жыл бұрын
@@rileymachelle4088 ehhh, yea.. I dont think Ellie forgave Abby at all in the end though, I think Ellie had more of a revelation about Joel rather than Abby, or Ellie didn't have a revelation at all on the beach but instead was so completely overwhelmed with uncertainty that she broke down into tears. I loved the game but I can clearly understand why people dislike it: Goopy goblin gamer brain says "idc I wants ta shoot ppl now" and understandably so. The story is definitely not nearly as concise and airtight as it's predecessor, and characters aren't given the time to be nearly as relatable as they were in the first game, though I feel the game's main intentions were to make you sad, angry, happy and empty at times, they want to test tribalism and how far you will go until questioning the characters actions. They want to reignite the flames of Joel and Ellies relationship. I feel the most beautiful contrast between the two endings of the games is that in tlou1 Joel lied to Ellie to try and preserve their relationship, in tlou2 Joel and Ellie tell their truths and the way they feel and it shatters their relationship, though it is still hopeful and leads to the path of recovery and forgiveness. Why I wrote all of this is beyond me, I just really appreciate this game I guess, even with it's flaws. It's one of the only stories that I have ever seen that requires so much of me and my emotions to work and it's holy unique.

I literally played the entire final mission of Dishonored without killing anyone because Samuel told me he didn't like the killer I had become and alerted the guards. Then, when I played Dishonored 2, I did a whole no kill run for as long as I could, because of the impact my choices made from the first game. Brilliant game mechanic to have the story change based on your bloodlust!
@Avajou_4 жыл бұрын
I actually hate that concept. I straight-up never played Dishonored again after they ran at me with that bullshit. I don't mind being a pacifist, I mind that the game gives me so many fun ways to kill people, and then says "but nah that fucks up the story, play the more boring version of the game." Like Undertale does it excellently, where the pacifist run has mechanics that are actually enjoyable and interesting. Same reason I hate that killing people in Phantom Pain makes you a demon. Like, why the fuck would you hand me a rocket launcher and a tank, and then say "Yeah but nah, you shouldn't use that, use this silencer pistol instead of A FUCKING ROCKET LAUNCHER"????????
@wakkjobbwizard4 жыл бұрын
Someone Illegal actually if you’re talking about the scoring system in the phantom pain you can kill people and still get an S. Just do missions super quickly and you can get S rank basically no matter what (within reason). But I understand what you mean and I had the same experience.
@Avajou_4 жыл бұрын
@@wakkjobbwizard No there's actually a feature where if you kill too many people you become a "Demon Snake", where your horn grows and the blood stays on you until you do enough nice stuff to offset it. It's called a karma system or something. Building a nuke gets it too. And that's even fucking dumber cause there's a trophy that wants you to build a nuke.
@Dyno_984 жыл бұрын
One of the greatest sentiments of accomplishments I got in videogames was when I solved the Jindosh lock in Dishonored 2 all by myself, without knocking out or killing anyone of the people I would had to to get the combination provided by the game.
@awesomechainsaw4 жыл бұрын
Someone Illegal I think Dishonored 2 is a little better because of this cause all of your weapons and tools do have a purpose in nonlethal due to the addition of the bloodfly nests. Though it does lose a-lot of the charm the first game had in other areas.

Although a little bit different as it's more similar to the story of tlou1 in this regard , I think the original Nier game did this much better ( also no real spoilers but i'd be talking about vague story " outlines " so i'd still avoid reading if you haven't played it ) , where you're set on a specific path of violence throughout the story and the game flips it on you in the end by revealing information you haven't been told before . but it works cuz it's a lot more complex than tlou2's message of just saying killing bad , don't kil . Plus , it challenges your view of the game and your actions all while giving you a hard choice at the end , I want to talk about the details but I don't wanna spoil it cuz a remake is coming next year and I think it's a game that everyone should play without knowing much about the story

You know what game did this “Revenge is bad” thing much better? Sifu. An extremely different type of game, but hear me out. You start off being killed alongside your dad, but you come back for a reason you don’t know yet and you go to kill all the people responsible, who comprise of this small group of martial arts masters with magic powers, but is lead by someone who isn’t shown to have any real power that would help him in combat (some heavy MGS3 inspiration there) and the games immersive, difficult and satisfying combat helps you on this quest, you don’t even kill everybody along your way- some maybe, but the wide majority of jobbers can be seen writhing on the floor in pain, you’re just trying to get to the people on top who you know are responsible for the death of you and your father. You feel like an absolute badass taking everyone down, and when you finally get to the last guy, the conversation you have reveals that he was practically your older brother, he has all of your moves and probably uses them more effectively than you at this point in the game. When you finally kill him you find out that he killed your father because he wanted to get to this magic pendant that would bring back his wife and daughter, but after realizing his mistake he decided to give it to you. To which you are given a message along the lines of “To use Wude is to show that you can easily beat someone, and when you decide not to, they won’t want to fight anymore.” This gives you at least a base level of guilt, and as you replay through the campaign, you find out that all of the figure heads are kind of pathetic, each with their own problems. In order to spare them all, you essentially have to make the situation harder for yourself, and extend the fight, and then spare them just before handing them the finishing blow. This strategy makes you feel like you are doing the right thing, while still making you feel like a badass, so the quality of the game is not diminished by the story. And sparing the last boss is an extremely difficult task, because he doesn’t want to be forgiven and makes it as hard as possible to spare him, by the time you’ve gotten the good ending, you feel like a true unbeatable master, yet you feel smarter and wiser than when you started, and the best thing is that it was all your choice, the game naturally directed you to do the bad thing first without forcing you, you could’ve gotten the best ending first time around but it manages to make you feel bad for your choices, and satisfied when you rectify them- I don’t think it could’ve been done better.

And ND--esp Troy and Druckmann--were SO condescending to any players who criticized the game, no matter how respectful they were being while giving criticism. It's giving Bethesda's lead writer telling everyone that ACTSHUALLY, Starfield is a masterpiece and we're all just too dumb to get it. Like, nobody is saying Joel shouldn't have died. They're saying he shouldn't have died an hour into the game, shouldn't have died the way he did, and his death shouldn't have been followed by forcing us to play as his *extremely* unlikeable killer. He should have agreed to help Ellie on her quest for revenge (let's say Abby attacked their settlement or whatever and killed Dina) and then he should have died in the late game as a result of Ellie choosing violence over peace, if the "revenge bad" narrative was what they were shooting for. Instead we got "Revenge bad, but only if it's Ellie doing the revenge-ing." As soon as I hear Neil say "TLOU Part 1 was about love. Part 2 is about hate," I knew it was going to be a f*cking disaster, and I was right. The reason TLOU1 was so good was BECAUSE of that love. And trying to make Abby's dad retroactively good was so fucking stupid, god. Abby sucks, her dad sucks, and ND gave us no reason to like either of them.

I thought it was insane that they didn't parallel Ellie helplessly watching Joel getting killed by Abbey with Lev helplessly watching Abbey getting killed by Ellie. The flashback to Joel meant so little in the moment, if Lev was crying and begging for Abbey to get up it would've been so much more satisfying and made way more sense. Ellie in that moment fully realizing that during her self-righteous journey of justice that she was the villain, and would make the punishment of finding the house empty and her ability to play guitar, her connection to Joel, gone because of her unjust actions, a legacy lost to fury.

We have a mattress shop with a jingle "sleep country canada, why buy a mattress anywhere else" and ol Johnny, genius of elementary school, mockingly sang "why buy a mattress when you can sleep on the couch" sleep country just couldn't recover from such a hot take. They closed a few years back.

Well, in defense of Far Cry 3, the plot itself acknowledges, that Jason is losing himself in the violence, to the point of abandoning a chance at escaping just to murder Vaas.

I also think in light of recent events that we shouldn’t forget that Druckman explicitly based the conflict between the WLF and Scars on the ongoing occupation of Palestine, makes this game even more absurd with its ideas around violence.

There's a Lebanese-Canadian dude that wrote a book called "Anima". SPOILERS The main character ends up leaving the bad guy stranded in the middle of nowhere so that vultures slowy pick him apart. That was good writing, because you didn't exactly know how the main character felt deep inside, as he was processing everything along the way. That was an unexpected take on revenge, which really stuck with me. Ellie sparing Abby made some sense, but it was so poorly made clear why she did so that it just felt lazy. The game's visual identity is miles off the first game, since it's pretty much grey and wishy washy the whole time. Finally, Abby is unlikable as f*ck, simply put. Part II was all over the place.

@@JDuzzle Thats the point, you are not creating the stories here, its already framed and you just have to be in the shoes of the characters. BTW (My personal opinion) the ending of the game is much more meaningful than you guys think and letting Abby go at that point is very justified. I would like to do a breakdown of it but I don’t have such a audience as these people on internet, the fact that they are the ones who don’t get it is kinda surprising.
@interrobangings3 жыл бұрын
agreed but that's the extent of it -- lara heavily breathing "I CAN DO THIS" as she mows through enemies. that's as bad as the game tries to make you feel about it. tlou2 is like a parent that clicks their tongue and waggles their finger at you for being a bad bad boy and shooting the dog that was about to rip out your throat

This is my first time watching your videos, I have subbed and completely agree with your viewpoint. I've always felt ND games were repetitive. BUT, the multiplayer of the first game is what was the true star. It took the very best, made it better, and still have an active multiplayer over 10 years later. The roller-coaster the Factions community has been put through by ND is a story all in of itself.
@Junglesmells Жыл бұрын
Oh boy. Yep. A huge misstep by ND. To not communicate about it properly has made it far far worse
