I recommend a company called lastdrop, i have them on my yacht for my 85mm shafts and they work great assuming they are installed correctly. (i first did not). It doesnt have the bellow, it has a stainless steel ring on graphite that is pushed with springs. The hose fittings are on a solid cnc'd graphite block and are metal unlike this unit. Also, can a metal fitting be safely attached to the current system you have? I am also curious why the vessel needed to come out of the water. Could you have had parts handy for a wet quick fix ;)

@@NautiStyles I kept thinking "surely they're both divas once the camera turns off." But now that I've seen Rico bend himself into a pretzel in the engine room, and Victoria without her concealer, I like you both twice as much. I've learned that if you stop laughing at yourself, it won't be long before you stop loving yourself.

I really enjoyed this video. Just a suggestion, but maybe you could throw in some of the things us “land lovers” don’t experience about boat life? How do you refuel? What are some of the rules/customs in port or at sea? Just ideas. We know about not ringing the bell unless it is foggy. Lol. Love the channel!

I lived on a 42 Viking aft cabin in Maine back in the 90's. I have nothing bad to say about the experience. I did 100% of my own maintenance so cost were pretty well contained. It was a great lifestyle. The most common question I got was "What do you do in the winter?" The answer is....I turn the heat on. Retired now and looking for a 40'ish trawler for part time liveaboard.

My uncle had a 32 foot Silvertron, and 42 foot Hatteras back in the late 70s and 80s up to 2000. He was a licensed sea captain in Galveston TX. He stayed away from larger vessels. His motto was "the bigger the boat, the bigger the headache," lol Thanks for showing the realism of Yatch life. So good you all can do a majority of the maintenance. Fisrt of all, I love your videos. We lived aboard our DeFever 47 Performance Cruiser for nine years. The beginning of our adventure began at Lighthouse Point in Florida. We hired a captain since I was unfamiliar with the ICW and the locks between Florida and Kemah, Texas. We dropped the wife off at Clearwater to visit friends. She did not want to cross the Gulf to Apalachicola. The captain and headed across. Approximately half way across, the captain came to the bridge and said "we have a problem." I opened the door to the main salon and it looked like a blizzard. I asked the captain if we were on fire. His reply was "I don't think so but you need get out the life raft." I pushed him aside and charged down the steps. It was steam . As it turned out a cast aluminum elbow that carried coolant . We made it to Saunders Yacht Service in Orange Beach, Alabama. Three months later we got our "home." When the elbow blew out, it burned out our engine. I went home. After talking to the insurance adjuster/surveyor, I finally received my claim check - $65000. That should put your fridge problem in perspective 😊

I recently bought a 3d printer and I am learning a lot about the different things you can print for plumbing, electrical wire mounting brackets, and a ton of other things. It's like having a parts store with patients though. It's not a quick process to print things. But, if you have a issue in the middle of nowhere. You can print the item you need. Very cool. 🍺✌️

Never owning any type of boat before, yet having the desire to retire around 55 and living aboard a 40 foot trawler boat in next 3-5 years, these videos have been extremely helpful. Things we still don’t know, after buying a 10 year old used trawler, I have to wonder what’s involved day to day. What’a the deal with deck hands at boat slips, are they just part of the docking process? Are there costs involved with them? Are they there for tips only and if so, what’s a common tip to a deck hand when docking? I’ve heard mention of running on a budget, what’s a reasonable budget for operating a boat yearly? Can you expect to live on a boat full time for say $45,000 income yearly? Would love to see a VPOD on what newbies should expect in terms of ordinary costs of running and using a boat. Love what you guys have done so far. Thanks

That was a crazy good vid SQ1 & CM... Home port repairs are certainly less costly (understatement) than in the islands any island. People who think boat life is just fun and sun are out of their minds. It's a constant battle with the sea and Mother Nature. One of my greatest cost savings was to ceramic the hull and upper decks even my old fenders. It cut down on washdowns and general cleaning by about 80% year overall. It's just great to see the everyday of everyday living that we all experience no matter the size of one's MY. Oh and the great thing about ceramic coating is that your the shiniest MY in the marina or at anchor.... Have a great weekend!

Watching this video brought back many memories that my late wife and I experienced as boat owners. Most non-boaters really don’t realize that boat ownership involves a lot of work to enjoy the good times. I believe that I have done most of the repairs that Rico performed in this episode. Shaft seals in particular have to be addressed right away. I loved completing needed work and having a cold beer afterwards. Thanks for the memories.

Victoria, Rico; I've viewed hundreds of vlogs over the past 30 months and without doubt that one was by far the most entertaining. Hope there's no payback from Nick & Tristan & David but you guys have produced a magic engrossing video, I wanted more, more, more. A query or two. You've mentioned several times in vlogs about your "must have" list in the next boat (other than bigger as slave Rico, asked when changing the pump to YOUR head). I think it's time to publish the list as it stands, so far. To save me browsing every video, how big is your current boat and what year? Just watched the 42ft Prestige on Aqualholic and it seemed ideal for you guys. And Rico.....you were the saviour when changing the mattresses.

Great video. Did you replace the other shaft seal fitting while you were there? I would. I’d also put that part on a replacement schedule that would prevent most of the failures over time. Haulout is way more expensive than that plastic nipple. Just my 2cents.

Vinegar is a great natural cleaner and disinfectant by clearing pipes and removing soap and grease from clothing. Occasional use will dissolve calcium, soap, grease and kill bacteria. You can dilute it to clean and disinfect your home. But rinse well with water wiping with a damp cloth. It works. Stay healthy. We love you both.

Just loved it! Even the Bad was good as someone else was doing it ;) It's winter here in Aus, so we're getting a Bayliner Ciera Cruiser we bought a few months ago serviced and ready for the new season when we'll be going up some Victorian coast (in Australia :). I'm not a Rico's stage, but would like to be with basic servicing... Here's a few suggestions for the future: 1. What is Rico's Toolkit? 2. What is a typical re-stock for you if you go on a trip (1-2w) - interested to know about things we'd probably not think of... How about a vid of you and Rico out for a few days or so? I'm only relatively recent here, so maybe you've already done some of these? Really like your channel and how you "lift the covers" on boat life so one day when we hopefully do it we'll have some nice tips to help us out.

Suggestion for the fittings on the dripless seals. Next haul out, replace the plastic barbs with silicon bronze. You will need to periodically replace those as well but they last longer than plastic and are not affected by the heat in the engine bay. Most marine fittings are silicon bronze due to it's corrosion resistance, but try to find a USA made source. Not sure about supply source in California, but here in my area, we have many marine supplier sources.

I can't imagine how much maintenance costs would be without Ricos knowhow, and company contacts. To do most of the fitting yourself, must reduce a huge portion of the costs. Although still not a cheap lifestyle to live. I was a Deckside Seaman so have no clue about the Clanky Marine Engineer world. If I owned a yacht I'd be paying someone else. Then again as disabled, I still would even if I had knowhow. Rico is a walking encyclopedia of Clankyness. No wonder he likes nap time. Lol.

Kudos to Rico! If I was ever filmed doing some of the projects around my house they would have to be a silent film! 😂. Quick question about the haul out, when they put slings under boat, are ther markings on boat or do they just center them on the hull. Not sure how heavy yours is, but probably could have serious damage if places in wrong locations and lifted out.

The yard workers are trained to do haul outs, they know where to place the straps, damage rarely occurs, maybe a little rub off of the bottom paint, 30 years of boating and never heard of a boat dropped.

That is a pretty good question ,there is probly a max space between straps and distance from the bow and Stern

Enjoyed the video. I like to see all the bad things , real life problems that occur when owning a boat. It’s now all glamorous 🙏👍

Bless you for filming anything to do with the heads: Not a glamorous subject, but oh-so-important to sanitary, healthy living. Can't say I enjoyed watching Rico fix the poo-pump, but it was interesting and he deserves handyman medal. You two are so much fun to watch, I guess I'd watch you replace a mattress. Love to Marco, the Zen doggo of the year.

You guys are so positive . My first bought I boat 6 years ago and thought this is fun and low cost what could go wrong . You discover how many items are built cheap but always so much aggravation !! I upgraded 3 years ago and all is great 😀praying 🙏

I know this is an older post, but one of my faves! Love the way you addressed the moisture prob with your mattress! Moisture is one of the biggest most insidious things you really have to keep on top of, or you WILL get mold and that's a pain in the butt! ❤ Love you guys!

I would use bronze instead. Bromze is anti-microbial, which is a real benefit when in salt water.

an how much it would cost if you had to "call a guy" to fix toilet, sink, some electrical stuff? $300 for sink, $1500 for toilet, 200/h for electrical stuff?

Greetings NautiStyles Yes those who don't own a boat do not realize that there is more to cruising than just the fun and games. We live in Ontario, Canada and cruise the Great Lakes. But it was a sad day yesterday as our boat was lifted out of the water and put into heated storage for the winter 😫 Will be thinking of you still on your boat and wishing you all the best this winter. Keep Rockin Cheers

I’ve always wanted to ask, I’m sure I’ve missed it, but where are you from originally? I lived in Germany for 13 years and I love listening to accents. Love your videos! My fave so far was w Tim Alls! What a yacht! Have I missed a Nordhavn 76? Thank you!

That little plastic gizmo for the drip less shaft thing you can probably pick up a brass one at ACE Hardware or NAPA auto parts. Also if you throw in an in-line shutoff valve you can shut the water off if you ever have to replace it again and you won’t have to be hauled out.
