Any who, it would be nice to have a special video to interview those who are making these kinds of "kites." What kind of device is it? How does it work? What is it good for? What safety precautions does the operator need to take? What significance does this technology mean for the sailing communities?

Finally a yacht without steering wheels, new commercial ships and work boats for the last ten years plus are rarely built with steering wheels. Also thrilled to see the kite system fitted to this yacht a plus for long passages. I believe that the separated head compartment on the starboard side serves double duty, day head and stateroom head.

I do have a problem with Catamaran companies that think that sell to direct owners. You have to have flat floors as much as possible, No body likes to step up, then down... and after a few cold ones on a boat that's a problem. I really want to see these kind of Cats being made for seniors, differently abled people that offer these conveniences. Be more people friendly and still keep the tech friendliness too.

I normally don’t leave comments on any channel but I absolutely love you two. The outtakes crack me up…And, most importantly, you two provide the highest quality review of boats. Nobody compares because you are connecting the dots on the practicalities and realities. That’s a huge trust factor, especially in a yachting culture that’s full of posturing and lacks any real understanding of what they are selling (beyond branding pretty boats). As an example, there’s no info out there that’s clearly states (5 knots = 18 hrs). Finally…some basis of reality. Of course…it’s fun to watch you two being playful and frustrated together. One without the other wouldn’t work. What a great team. Silent yachts have my attention…I’m interested.

As a techie, I absolutely love this! I think the interior (and a small bit of the exterior) could use some more styling, but it's nothing to complain about. After all, we in EU are pretty acclimated to IKEA furnishings ;). Some day, maybe 10 years from now, the technology will be 2x better, so the speed and/or range will be double. But even now, if I had the money, I would put it here instead of a fixed penthouse somewhere.

Comparing this interior to the interior of the Horizon 60 is like night and day. I would have thought that with the Silent 60 being such a Modern nouveau boat, it would have the interior to match. I know taste is subjective, but aside from the roominess, the boat looked somewhat unfinished on the interior. Great review as always. Thank you for the tour.

What an awesome vessel, amazing how fast battery, solar, electric tech has come. Just imagine when solid state batteries come into play. Love this yacht.
@usertogo
@usertogo 2 жыл бұрын
Better than solid state I think would be a flow cell battery where anolyte and catholyte tanks can be put in the lowest points of the hulls, allowing for huge capacity and super low center of gravity, and the only part that may ever require maintenance or replacement the actual flow cell and pumps, could be split into redundant units and close to the smaller short term storage LiFePO batteries and the motors... And yes I offer industrial design services and specialize in solar electromobility!

@_Briegel
@_Briegel 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds good at first. But when you take a closer look, you realize that if you don't want to or can't use the kite, you'll end up driving a diesel-powered ship again. The batteries store 210 kW, which is enough for 18 hours of travel at 5 knots. The solar system creates 17 Kw (peak) the hour. So it would take 12.35 hours to fully charge. But since you can only count on about 10 hours of effective solar radiation, you only get 170 Kw back into the batteries per day. This is better than nothing, but it is still not suitable for long trips. The charging power should be designed so that with about 10 hours of sunlight you can cruise for 24 hours (so with 5 to 7 kn) without having to use a kite as a "booster". The bottom line is not yet perfect, but at least a step in the right direction. I'm curious to see when the first solar boat suitable for long-distance travel comes on the market. It can't be that difficult to reduce the weight, increase the solar surface area and reduce consumption (e.g. through narrower hulls).
@tophan5146
@tophan5146 2 жыл бұрын
@@_Briegel You can’t increase solar surface much more and we’re already at the limits of photovoltaic panels efficiency. Thankfully he already have much more established alternative for long trips without fossil fuels - sailing.
@_Briegel
@_Briegel 2 жыл бұрын
@@tophan5146 Hi, of course I can increase the solar area. I could simply double the roof area and extend it sideways if needed. However, it would certainly make sense to first reduce the overall weight of a pure solar boat and also to significantly reduce the wetted surface, which is decisive for the driving resistance, by slimmer hulls. If you put all three together, i.e. solar surfaces that can be partially enlarged, less weight and lower frictional resistance in the water, it should be possible to achieve the required 5 knots of cruising speed over 24/7 with pure solar power charging and batteries for energy buffering. However, the people who can afford such a thing would then have to do without some cherished comforts such as air conditioning, oversized watermakers, hydraulic autopilots (in 24-hour use) and refined wood veneers, etc. And yes, you're right of course, sailing really is more beautiful. But we should also think about those who do not want to or can not sail and who prefer to sail on a direct course under engine to their destination and that in any weather.
@UbiquitousTech

One option I can see is a hydrogen fuel cell generator and restoration rig. In addition to the batteries, one could produce the hydrogen, store it, and then use it in the fuel cell allowing spurts of greater speed.

I really like the concept to go completely electric on boat not just for fuel saving. It also saves a lot of room normally occuppied by big chunks of diesel engine and the maintenance of the system is much more simplified. But now we are just at the early stage of electric boats. Maybe a decade later most of the boats would be electric power.

this catamaran used 220 liters (generator) of diesel on a test of 170 nautical miles, identical to what I used on a motor catamaran on a trip of 150 nautical miles, solar panels cover its air conditioners, lights, refrigerators, systems in general, from 15kw solar panels the maximum you can gain is 5 kw (on average), we are not yet technologically ready for this undertaking, but we are on the right track, at the moment it is not worth it for this price

As an engineer and PV solar expert here is what I would develop if I owned one of these...I'd design either a fixed hull or inflatable large "dingy" or trailer of sorts to house a large array of modules to tow around. Would double as materials storage. You could more than double your solar production, and greatly expand the speed and range during lower solar times. Also could store power in a large expansion battery to tow on large trips. Be your own power plant. It could be made to store small and expand out where there's room for it to operate (not at shore of course).

So with full batteries it can run one hour with 50% speed which translates to a range of 10 miles. With 100% Solar Power (only in perfect weather conditions) you can run the engines at a stunning 3% load which is basically the equivalent of a 20HP petrol engine. This isn't a yacht, it's a houseboat. A very expensive one.

They’ve already taken one across the Atlantic. They did use some diesel but not the entire time.You can also get a Kite to increase range and speed. Basically you have to plan your long crossings just like you would on a sail boat and look at winds and currents. Not sure the people who buy this boat want that. Most seem to want luxury living in a smaller area like just the Caribbean or just the Med. For that, it seems pretty good.

Maybe I misheard the man he said five knots for 18 hours before diesel generator backup needed to keep the system going and still it is a very nice houseboat that can keep your refrigerator and AC working free of charge minus 2 million

Great review! Still the Master bedroom for me. Me and wife are the master of our family. Don't bend to Woke movement. I wish the 60 had more character and charm to it. I miss the trampolines from Silent 55/64. 60 needs more outside seating in sun. Alva Yachts is now using the old 55 design and has a beautiful 50/60/90 versions. Competition is always good!

Thank you for sharing, solar panels are old technology. Used to work at an Air Force Base and I saw firsthand what they will soon release to the public, it is the size of a satellite dish for cable television. A glass bowl in the center that magnifies the sun's Ray into a focal point onto a plate of amorphous Crystal silver and silicon dioxide.

Majorca is almost as beautiful as Victoria! That being said, a solar-powered cat is my dream boat. Also, wtf is up with giving the crew the absolute worst living quarters possible? Like, just shove a bed-shaped-object into the smallest space possible and call it a "crew quarters". Oh, and your head is on the other side of the boat. Why would you not want the people taking care of you and your multi-million dollar boat to have comfortable quarters? Crew deserves to have quarters equal to the guest cabins, in my opinion.
@heehee63
@heehee63 2 жыл бұрын
Nautistyles pointed out this is likely going to be owner operated. The crew probably would stay for maybe a week or something if there even is any crew at all. I doubt they care about the size of the cabin at all and if they do, they can always just not take the job. Im fine with this cabin for short term stays. Id stay in it myself.
@louiselyon3849

I agree too - some amazing aspects but the interior layout could be way better for 2 million! Sure it will look better "dressed", but the cabins were all wrong for me ....guests having to clamber out of bed the bottom end and very un-private showers and heads? I guess it will evolve as more orders go in. Great presentation though as always from the lovely Vic and Rico!

Mark, the folks who will be buying something like this very specifically want their ‘lessers’ to have the worst conditions possible. Its kind of what they are all about. You needn’t believe me, just look throughout history. Regardless of culture, period, etc, the most privileged have generally sought to diminish standards and conditions for the masses. Then, eventually, a mass uprising occurs and the pitchforks come out.

@silentyachts
@silentyachts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles! Under ideal conditions - when cruising at 5 knots - you basically have unlimited range (as the energy produced by the panels equals the energy consumed by the propulsion system and the household appliances on board). The predecessor of this model, the SILENT 64, was the first solar powered production yacht to cross the Atlantic Ocean. You can check out the video of the crossing here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3u4n42ijqmCiqc

Cool! I love the idea of a kite sail for a passage making boat, whether electric or a fuel burner. Wonder how much the kite sail option adds to the 2.18M euro base price tag of this yacht? Had me rolling with the out takes, maybe the best ones you've shared to date.
