We were listening to the name that describes the glance of Devi.
vaktra lakṣmī parīvāha calan mīnābha locanā
[whose eyes possess the luster of the fish that move about in the stream of beauty flowing from Her face.]
yat-kaṭākṣasam-upāsanā-vidhiḥ
sevakasya sakalārtha-sampadaḥ .
saṃtanoti vacanāṅga-mānasais_
tvāṃ murāri-hṛdayeśvarīṃ bhaje ..
Kanakadhara Stotram, Sloka 14
Salutations to Mother Lakshmi the Worship of Whose Merciful Glance is the entire Devotion and Wealth of Her Servants. Therefore May my Speech, Body, and Mind be enveloped by your Worship; You Who are the beloved Goddess residing within the Heart of Murari. There is nothing that we cannot achieve with the glance of Devi. So we should be totally devoted to her eyes or glance. We should constantly think of her glance, and worship it. It fulfills all our desires.
daṉantarum; kalvi tarum; orunāḷum taḷarvaṟiyā
maṉantarum; deyva vaḍivuntarum; neñcil vañcamillā
iṉantarum; nallaṉa ellām tarum; aṉbar eṉbavarkkē
gaṉantarum pūṅkuḻalāḷ abirāmi kaḍaikkaṇgaḷē.
Abhirami Antadi, Sloka 69
Abhirami Bhattar talks about Devi’s glance. A side glance of Mother Goddess Abhirami, bedecked with hairs shining with divine flowers, will bestow all wealth, knowledge, education, divine form, guileless hearts, all good things, and divine associations even to those, who simply claim to be her devotees. There is nothing that is not attainable. Everyone can worship the divine eyes of Devi, her glance, and be grateful. With this, the chapter on glance is over.
vaktra lakṣmī parīvāha calan mīnābha locanā
nava campaka puṣpābha nāsā daṇḍa virājitā
[who is resplendent with a nose that has the beauty of a newly blossoming campaka flower.]
This is the next mantra
Devi has a beautiful nose which is compared to a new Champaka flower. A new champaka flower has a bigger bottom part and a straight and thin upper part. Scriptures describe the qualities of eye, nose and mouth as being straight. Ottur Namboodiripad says that faces of people will be in a certain way before and after sneezing. The face gets distorted before sneezing. Certain people have noses in one direction and eyes in another. Mouth may be slanted. We should not ridicule facial qualities. But according to ‘Samudrika Shasrta’, noble people have beautiful nose. Devi’s nose is like a new Champaka flower, Straight and a bigger bottom part. Saundarya Lahari describes Devi’s nose this way.
asau nāsāvaṃśastuhinagirivaṃśadhvajapaṭi
tvadīyō nēdīyaḥ phalatu phalamasmākamuchitam ।
vahannantarmuktāḥ śiśirataraniśvāsagalitaṃ
samṛddhyā yattāsāṃ bahirapi cha muktāmaṇidharaḥ ॥
Saundarya Lahari 61
Himavan became famous when Devi was born to him as his daughter. Even though he was inanimate, he did intense penance and as a result, Devi was born to him as his daughter, not from the womb of mother. Hence Devi has names like Parvathi, Himavat putri, Girija and so on. Himavan’s clan had the most fame because Devi was born into their family. May we be bestowed with proper result. May this do what is required.
In India, there is a belief that there are different places where pearls are formed like in sea shells, high quality bamboo, elephant skull etc. After a period of time pearls form inside bamboo and one or two of them come out. Bamboo is also somewhat like Champaka flower, with a bigger bottom part and going straight up and slender. Shankaracharya Swami compares Devi’s nose to that. Yoga Shastra says that we have three naadis or energy pathways like Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. In pranayama, we generally do purakam (inhalation) through Ida nadi, rechakam (exhalation) through Pingala nadi, kumbhakam (cessation) through sushumna nadi. The way pearls are formed in bamboo, pearls are formed in Devi’s nose. Devi took breath in through left nostril and out through the right and did cessation in the central nadi. One pearl came out with the air flow. It shines as the nose ring, as an ornament. This is how Shankara Swami praises Devi’s nose and nose ring. We are hearing the part Keshadipada Varnana of Sri Lalitha Sahasranama or description of Devi from head to toe. It talks about each part of Devi and the principles it represent. We can hear more in the coming days.
