This was in a time when the military was still segregated too. The Navajo code talkers were setting some firsts joining the Marines. Nowadays as I've heard it said the only color the Corps sees is green and Marines all bleed red.

As a retired United States Marine, I say thank you to a Navajos for your love of your country. During the my 21 years of service, I had the distinct pleasure to work with several Navajos in my different unit during my career. Outstanding warriors, all of them! The is no doubt in my mind that the Codetalkers made the difference between defeat and victory for the United States in World War II. God Bless you all!

Last year, I visited the Chippewa tribe's museum in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. I was talking with the lady who was working in the book store. She told me that they have classes there that teach their children their native language. She said she was not allowed to speak English when the children are there. I know the history of how children were punished for speaking a native language in public schools out West. It's beautiful children are learning to speak the language of their ancestors.

The Japanese captured a Navajo US Army soldier named Joe Kieyoomia in the Phillipines (they mistook him for being Japanese) and tried to have him decipher the Navajo Code but it was unintelligible to him. He understood Navajo but he obviously didn't have the appropriate training to decipher the messages. He told the Japanese it was nonsense and they tortured him because they thought he was lying. 😶

@@pamelameckley5040 The Japanese thought Joe Kieyoomia was a Japanese serving in US Army (and hence a traitor to Japan). He was eventually able to convince the Japanese of his Navajo heritage and when the Japanese code-breakers figured out the Americans were using a Navajo code they tried to pump him for information and, not believing him when he said it was nonsense to him, they tortured him. Brutal stuff but it's pretty obvious the Japanese were a nasty bunch during the war. He also survived the Bataan Death March and the Nagasaki bombing (there were Allied POWs in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, something which is never mentioned when the talking heads say how dropping the A-bombs helped win the war and save Allied lives- except those Allied lives that were in POW camps in the two cities that got A-bombed) which, if he was Japanese, would make him something of a pariah. If any man deserved an award of some kind he certainly does. You can Both of my grandfathers served in the war (one in the Pacific in the Navy and another in Europe in the Army). Maybe. But the Code the Code Talkers talked was not just the Dine' language but a code based on it. The Japanese captured and tortured some Navajos who were not code talkers and forced them to translate, but they could not guess what the meanings were. Also, the Marine Corps designated a handler to each code talker or team, called a ''Cowboy'' whose job was the security of the talker or team. If they were about to be captured, he was to shoot them, so they wouldn't be tortured and turned by the Japanese. The Germans have been interested in the Dine' cousins, the Shis 'N-de, or Apaches, since the 10 Pfennig novels of Karl Mai in the late 19th Century. Apache is another Athabaskan language, but different. Battlefield comm is now cyber-encrypted, so it's really a hacker's game, anyway.

WE are proud of them too. That’s the thing about a Marine, the Oath is forever. Forever. That’s a long time. Hallelujah. ✨🕊✨

Wonderful men , I wish more people in the USA could understand no matter how we all got here we are as one now. So many inside the USA are trying to tear it apart this story should be an example to all we should be as one against those wishing to take your freedom away. Our leaders have lost their way but not the core group of patriotic Americans , Those from all tribes , Asians born in the USA , and all nationalities here or that came here to be Americans. Even the Hawaiian Islands are under attack by those that are there supported by the people of the USA but want to break away from her . They would not last a week on their own , terrorist in the Philippines would be there so fast to kill and take over . And evil leaders from other Countries would follow up. Evil people always hate and want to tear down the good.... We must stand together.

It's ironic that the language they wanted to get rid of was the most important for the US. Thank you Wally.
