Theater ships were so advanced for there time. I was on the USS St. Paul CA 73 (66-68) It was a little older but it had a lot of fighting muscle. But in the Gulf of Tonkin The crew had no Air Condition and it was so hot when we were there. The officers had A/C and so did sick bay and the oil shack. I worked in #3 fire room. At times it could climb to 160 deg in those spaces. If it wasn’t for the heat I would have stayed in for 20+. It was still a great experience . We took a lot of incoming at times. How ever our luck ran out and we took a direct hit in the bow at the water line. A north vietnam artillery unit got lucky. I was in the fire room ant could hear the echo thru the ship. Fortunately it hit officers country berthing compartments and 3 store rooms just at the water line. They flooded rather fast. Everyone did there job and things got secured. A Tempoary patch was welded over the large hole in our side and we stayed on the gun line and did our mission. Looking back on event we were all young kids. 18-23 year olds. People grow up fast when they are trained properly for those conditions. These cruisers were designed to take a real beating and keep fighting. We trained all the time and prepared for just about anything. Amazing what kids can do when trained properly. We fired so many 8” rounds we replaced our gun barrels two times while I was on board. The ship was definitely used to its fullest extent over there. But not for anti aircraft missions. We did not encounter that( thank God). The New Port News relived is off the gun line a couple of times. She was a good looking ship also. I wish we had there air conditioning system. Lol. Needless to say after working in a hot boiler room and after discharge I went into heating and air conditioning. I’ve been in my own Busness for over 40 years. Thanks to that cruiser and the US Navy, they gave me a trade.

Vs Destroyers, Salem would’ve easily massacred them one after anouther. Vs Light cruiser, Salem would effortlessly crush them. Vs heavy cruisers, Salem would’ve pummeled them to their doom. Vs Aircraft Carriers, Salem could easily just shred plane after plane with extreme ease, and if it met their carrier, murdered it. Vs Battleships, they might look intimidating, but the Des Moines class if at a far away enough distance, they were capable of setting even Yamato ablaze and reduce the entire superstructure, AA defense, and secondary load to a ravaged steel inferno, and possible destroy all control of the ship from the superstructure. This really is the true cruiser king.
