I told him how I wanted him to make a melody sound and he got partially there then I played the end part of the melody of how I envisioned it. And we did that melody together in like 10min before going out. I added everything else because I knew how the drums were going to sound and the direction I saw it going.

Then I realized, like you say, all the provided presets, sounds and beats in apps and vsts are there so you can take (or "steal") whatever you want! FL Studio, as an example, provides demo songs precisely so you can learn and use anything from them. When I had that light-bulb moment in realizing all this, it was very liberating and freeing. @@NavieD I chose to force myself to take on every aspect of production myself rather than focusing on my strengths. Instead of focusing on the compositions which were the main ideas of most of my tracks back then I held myself back saying "I cant use presets I must make every sound from scratch" I'd spend ungodly amounts of time in sound design, then I'd write the track, then I'd focus on mixing and mastering the track to perfection (or as close as I could get it) all in writing the song literally was maybe 1/4th of the time I spent on a track. Sound design was another 1/4th and mixing and mastering often took half the time i spent on a track. I could have used the resources available to me and cut down the time spent on a single track considerably. I knew audio engineers who could have eased my time, I could have reused sounds instead of making new ones for every track. I held myself back because I wanted to have a "unique" sound and be a "real producer" while my peers who used a certain number of presets and used mastering services excelled far more than I did. They could put out tracks at 4x the rate of me and that helped push their stuff more.

I started making beats last August. I shied away from using loops and midis up until recently and now i clearly see that was my biggest mistake so far. While other upcoming producers that i found on Beatstars, Instagram and Facebook groups were making crazy good beats right off the bat, i was stuck for months trying to figure out how to put a decent melody, and that was quite depressing. There was a merit to that also, my melodies did improve, but at the beginning i had a feeling that if i used loops i will feel like cheating and even worse, i will become lazy and start depending on loops. Which is not true. Instead, what i should've done is dissect the melodies and try to copy them by ear, or even ''steal'' some of the ideas. Up until now i only watched tutorials on how to make melodies to improve, but i never really took the time to actually copy and analyze loops that i have downloaded almost a year ago. For a very long time i was depressed thinking i am not good at making melodies and loops and that i have no talent whatsoever, while in reality more than half of the producers, including big producers like you Navie, are using loops!

For someone who's trying to be just a beatmaker or producer, I agree with this video, but if you're trying to be some kind of mix of artist and music maker, I have a few things to add. I'd say if you already have some experience with playing an instrument, production will come easier. For example, if I have an idea for a guitar part and I can play it, I'm not going to search for a loop for that idea in my head, I'll just play it. If I didn't play guitar, though, I would use a loop for sure. And there can be a better guitarist/musician in the room with me, but he may not be able to get the same ideas as me. Also, music theory is information that has to be applied (e.g. playing an instrument in some context)

Very good points here, the key is in how you define your own role in the studio. Imo, there's no such thing as cheating short of straight cribbing someone else's idea. One of the reasons I learned music theory was so that I can be more legit than all the 'beatmakers' out there and know what I'm talking about when in the studio with other seasoned musicians. I always felt it was just an easy cop out using loops; only time I would use them was to build my own stuff on too of them to the point where I didn't even need the loop anymore. Hell, I even forced myself to learn piano 😅 after awhile though, learning too much can actually be more detrimental in the creation process. You end up learning so much that you constantly strive for perfection...and when striving for perfection, you have a high tendency to procrastinate. Now I just have fun and sample, I'll lay my music theory stuff in there occasionally. Usually my most miniscule beats are my best ones anyway.

solid advice,-- i came into the game,, as part of full force , a SIX man production team,, -different ideas, input, & at the end,, us hovering over some poor engineer trying to make sense of all of it lol- now a days,, here we are,,- dots on a screen & endless plugins u can craft sounds with- took me awhile to navigate DAW style production but 80/20 rule definitely makes sense,,- you'll drive yourself crazy tryina' soak Everything in & All times,,- i learned that the hard way,,-- thanks Nav, for taking your time, & sharing the knowledge,, -- 👊🏽

They say you're not a producer is you use premade sounds and loops, but that's the people that get sick of hearing the same sounds and loops in every song. Not everyone wants to make sounds and loops they just want to make music, but then again, these people say well you're not making music your just arranging loops. Sometimes it's just easier to grab a premade sound and a loop to get an idea going in your head. Sure, you can change the sounds and loops but why should you just to please some people. Do whatever feels right to you and don't feel as though you have to please people. Navie, we should just create music and enjoy it and not care if it's not a real instrument. We shouldn't care about what others think.

This is big facts Quincy Jones never played one single instrument on thriller but is one of the most successful producers of all time . He brought different musicians together to play guitars, pianos, strings, and other instruments on the album and it’s one of the most iconic albums of all time.

Yep. The people who have been making amazing music for decades have had this framework. It's the rest of us that have to catch up

when I jumped in to producing it was after I learned how dilla used chops and how madlib was inspired by him but he called himself loop digga so I already had an idea that there’s more than one way to make a beat or even use a sample

I’m a Singer/Songwriter, but I have to produce my own music, I spend most of my time in my home studio, making music to write and sing too, it’s frustrating because I don’t necessarily want to produce music, I like finding melodies to sing too, you have any videos on Producing for solo singers/songwriters, great videos btw Todd Blaze, aka the one man band

My dillema is usually not knowing if im using loops, if there is licensing issues or if everyother producer already used them

i only cheat whenever i cant figure out how to make drums. so i use drumloops from the internet to listen to which one sounds the best for what im making. then i go back, delete the drum loop and make my own beat based on what worked the best. but i will never use samples or loops unless they are part of a drum pack.

I thought the same thing for my first 3 years, now, im kinda over that self entitled mentality, sampling helps you perfect how to structure a song and focus more on drums. In my opinion, doing it all is cool but doing it all is overwhelming haha, keep it going g

@@NavieD yeah sampling helped me realize that you can still be creative and in a sense, give back and help out other artist and producers in the community as well as your own, also sampling helps your focus I think more on the drums and the rhythm in that, as well as not over thinking or over mixing anything because samples generally are mixed as they should lol and plus music is right? And that famous producers sample, and they are successful so I dont see how I couldn't from it either you know?

I honestly just want to build a beat from start to finish and understand what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. I feel if I used things without understanding what or how they did what I wasn’t able to , then I’d feel guilt like cheating off someone’s assignment for the A+ , when I was suppose to get an F. I copied one of chuki beats melody loops from his beginner tutorial video, added my own drum/808 patterns , hi hats , chorus melody , and structured it to my liking. I’m extremely new at making beats. I sent my sister an mp3 of it and she called me up instantly just to tell me how hard it slaps and she told me good job. My sister isn’t that type of person to give praise. I felt ashamed knowing it was a melody loop I copied and pasted , but I had to remind myself I did 90% of the work . I seen this add for drum monkey from unison I think , and instantly said “wtf is that?”. I respect the craft of the skill , but I can see it becoming as simple as 5 clicks to make a beat. Drag/drop melody, chord progression, drum patterns , then eventually a software will come out with auto structure to where you type how many bars you want intro/hook/verse/bridge/outro, and boom. Then the next step after that is completely AI produced instrumentals because they will know the formulas to hit songs , and be able to adapt/advance music quicker then a human. Click a button for an AI generated beat , put “Prod.(your name)” and that’s gonna be it .
