For me personally, I loved my Honda 300 EX years ago. Great to learn on, very versatile. Basically was marketed as a sport utility, but easily converted to full sport. I rode that thing for 9 years, HARD. Never had any major issues. Now that Im older, I wouldnt trade my 2000 Arctic Cat 500 4x4 for anything. Its not going to win many races, but its comfortable, reliable even at 20 years old, plows 2 foot of snow like nothing and havent bogged in a mud hole yet that people on newer quads wouldnt dare try. All comes down to what kind of riding you're looking for like said in the video to get the most enjoyment. But those 2 I listed above were both great.

I have a 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 and I'm perfectly happy with it. Got it last March, actually got it a year ago to this day. I've had one quad before it, a 2001 Yamaha Grizzly 600, but that thing was a POS. This Sportsman definitely isn't. It's reliable anyway, that model and year is known for being reliable, and on top of that I found it with 60 original hours on it which is insane to me. But that thing is perfect for my riding style. I'm not that invested in ATV riding, I don't need an 850cc or 1000cc heavy duty machine. I only go big bore for snowmobiles because I'm very invested in snowmobiling, I only like to ride the biggest and baddest 800+cc mountain sleds that go 0-100kph faster than you can blink, that's just how I ride snowmobiles. But that's not how I ride ATVs, it's just something for the summer to cruise around and occasionally I'll do some mudding with it but mostly just cruising through fields. I'm not invested in ATV/UTV riding, it's not my thing. Unlike my grandpa who gets a new fully specced out UTV every year lol. I just want something to cruise around and go through tight technical trails every now and again. The fastest I would ever go on an ATV is like 80kph and that's about how fast the 500 goes on a long enough straight. If I were to get another ATV, it would either be a Yamaha Raptor 350 or a Can Am XMR 650. I do enough mudding and technical trail riding to justify the Can Am, but the Raptor would realistically suit my riding style more. But you can find those for pretty cheap. So what I would realistically do is keep my Sportsman 500 and then also find a cheap Raptor 350. That would probably be in a couple years though

Honda Recon is the best Atv for utility. It's light, cheap, less parts to break, if you get stuck alot put a winch and your good to go. 4x4 front axles break on the larger models recon is rear wheel drive that never breaks. Or you can get a Honda Rancher 420 2WD but it's heavier so if you get stuck by yourself you might have a hard time getting out of the mud you will definitely need a winch on this Atv.

SO.. in other words just know starting off that once you buy one machine.. You will desire to ride and buy all the other's. That explains my yard, working on two 1991-90 250 Mojave's. only complaint is electric is handy to have especially if you get a project bike like me. (your foot will thank you later) BUT no need to change a $100 battery or chewed \ jammed starter so its a toss up to me I own both styles and found the more electronics the more confusing the bike becomes to maintain yourself like hidden ground contacts unless you can afford to have the devil.. I mean... the dealership to charge you $100 per hour to "look at it" literally and in the end its a bent clutch contact to engage a starting spark.. (bad experience) just food for thought as well as a good mechanic can make anything fly :D

Get a new one. A used one, you are taking a big risk because you don’t know how it was used, and how it was taken care of. People will lie just to get rid of it and now you got issues to get it fixed. ( my opinion ) A 450 is the best size. Good ride, enough power, lots of options. Good trail riding machine.

Plus a lot of people beat it thru mud, etc. That plays Havok on the seals and differentials if you don't change the fluids frequently. I've only ridden one but 450 seems like a minimum for utility use. I'm sure you could get away with 250 but just for longevity a bit bigger is better.

I bought a used 450 foreman that had been a mudder but still in decent shape..I have replaced almost every seal. The rear diff, drive shaft, all cables, front brakes, carb, tie red ends, all vacuume lines, and the seat. I have just over 2k in it.

I have a Artic Cat XC 450 it's the best of all worlds when it comes to 4 wheeling. It's a sport quad but I've put a rack on it and a winch and there both able to plug into the trailer hitch so I'm able to use them when I need them and if I don't want them I don't have to bring them with me because there not on my machine full time. I guess my 4 wheeler is closer to hybrid. I have 4 wheel drive reverse plus my seat is comfortable. I like it

If You want a reliable Sport Quad with no much maintainance and fun, Banshee/250r banshees Will last 20 years without touch a engine screw. You want some modern and smooth quad, then 700r/700xx, You want a race oriented quad with maintainance then YFZ 450R / TRX 450.

Best atv ever is the scrambler 1000. More than enough power, can be ridden by 11 year olds, good fox shocks, LED headlights, AWD, tuned dual exhaust. Then I would say a Yamaha raptor 700. I would go into more detail but any one who ever owned one would understand.

I ride a trx450r and my friend has a scrambler 850. I like my 450r for its ability to be controlled and the raw power. I like my buddies scramble because it feels like a cadi. Sure its heavier but the plush suspension makes you want to ride all day and it can keep up with my 450r on the trails if you know how to ride it. The scrambler is a very well rounded quad and im considering buying one

I had a 2005 bombardier outlander max xt 400 brand new in 05. I used it to plow the driveway and took my kids for trail rides, sold it then bought a used 08 sportsman 500 h.o a few years later. I used it to plow the driveway and some trail riding. I have a crf450x for off road riding but I decided I would rather have a more fun quad and sell the firtbike and utility quad. Put a down-payment on a 2022 Sportsman 850 ultimate trail edition. Looking foreward to it.

The price of the parts.A yfz or a raptor's parts are going to be much more expensive than a trx, once my yfz started slidyng down a hill i tryed to climb and when I realised I won't be able to stop it I jumped under it, my dad quickly got to me and said "why did your jump under it?" I simply said a broken plastic or a broken part will cost more to repair than if I brake a bone
@NavigateOffroad5 жыл бұрын
Haha! Clearly someone that puts their machine on high priority right there! Great point on the price of parts. I wish I would have thought of that for this video. Stay safe riding, Leon!

Good video. I like to think of the "hybrids" as the worst of both worlds to be honest. They're heavy and slow (slow for the engine size) like a utility and have no storage or protection from water, sticks, rocks, and mud like a sport quad. You really gain nothing by getting one of those. A Scrambler and Sportsman share 95% of parts just like how a Renegade and Outlander share 95% of parts. They're not faster and don't handle any differently when you have the same shocks on both machines. I also think that everyone should learn on a sport quad. You have to change gears yourself, pick a good line instead of relying on ground clearance and 4 wheel drive, and if you make a mistake and crash, it's a lot cheaper to fix. People that start on sport quads make much better riders
@dmo8482 жыл бұрын
Totally agree on buying a short quad at first. U get to know the bike very well. Like learning to hop logs n such. It's all technique

I am a Bee Keeper i use my quads for this so the main quad i use is a Suzuki 4 by 4 400 2005 with mudders and a winch. I pull a Ranger trailer behind it. I do not need any more power than i have its scary enough. So for a spare quad, i got new 2018 Fsi 400 4 by 4 and it's also scary for power. I move my hives in this and i love my quads i recommend Suzuki i love mine and use alot
