Currently going through a background investigation for a state law enforcement agency. Applied when I was 20 and a half. Passed written exam, physical fitness exam, and just passed the polygraph examination. BI is currently ongoing. I only worked part time at a grocery store and I have about 25+ college credits. Whole family is LEO’s and I was raised pretty hard growing up so my background was squeaky clean lol hope you all going through the hiring process are successful !!

how'd it go
@artofvalor93964 жыл бұрын
Really helps to do your research and talk to active duty law enforcement officers for advice before getting into law enforcement. The background process will be lengthy and stressful. The written exam will be challenging for some. The academy will be similar to military bootcamp combined with college courses. At least that's how it is in Northeast Alabama where I'm from. Be in great shape and be very honest on your background packet that you'll complete prior to your polygraph test. College degree always looks good on paper but isn't mandatory at every agency. Seriously, do your research on the department you're applying for and on law enforcement in general. The career takes a toll on one's mental health so be sure you're the type of person who's mentally stable and mentally tough. If you have any personal biases against certain groups of people, law enforcement is definitely not for you. I can't stress it enough... Know what you're getting into and know what you're capable of mentally and physically. Best of luck!

My backgrounds packet was just approved by the captain for LASD! I have medical being scheduled in the coming weeks! How’s the process for medical look?
@dallasvarnum15645 жыл бұрын
LeoVids i would say they weren’t very strict at all, but I didn’t have much in my background that would dq me. I did hear from a bunch of other applicants though that they were super willing to work with them as long as they were honest and from everyone I’ve talked to along the way they said that was true! So far this department has been absolutely awesome and worked really fast for everyone! I recommend it!
@dallasvarnum15645 жыл бұрын
LeoVids no problem! And I’m 23 with an associates for transfer and have 2 semesters left at ASU to finish a software engineering degree that I’m going to finish online once I get into custody!
@erik2265 жыл бұрын
dallas varnum Congrats bro! I’m also joining LASD, and have completed the whole hiring process. I start the academy next week. The medical is pretty simple. They are going to check your eyes sight, hearing and check if you are color blind. They’re also going to perform a physical exam, check your heart rate, draw blood and give a TB shot. All basic medical stuff. The only challenging part is the Bruce protocol test (treadmill test). I wasn’t worried about it when I initially saw videos of it because it looked pretty easy, but let me tell you it’s not! I’m in shape and I was struggling at the end. Luckily I passed. I was really surprised when the nurse told me I was actually one of the better candidates that performed the test because I was dying at the end lol. Not trying to scare you, but if you’ve been running and you’re in shape, you’ll pass it. Just don’t give up. Good luck man 👍🏼
@erik2265 жыл бұрын
LeoVids I have a pretty clean slate so my background investigation was fast and smooth. My polygraph was pretty smooth too. It was definitely nerve wracking, but if you answer the questions honestly, you have nothing to worry about. Also don’t search for videos or tips on how to pass or cheat the polygraph. They asked me if I searched any of those things. If you’ve seen videos or have searched for those things in the past don’t sweat over it. But when the time comes for you to take the tests don’t do it... Be honest with all of the questions from the start of the process to the end. You will be asked the same questions over and over and over again throughout the whole process. If you change up your answers and give different explanations it’s going to look bad on you. They are looking for consistency with all of your answers.
@dallasvarnum15645 жыл бұрын
Erik22 I appreciate it man! I’ve been doing a lot of weight lifting which I know is worthless for the academy, but it is my hobby and it’s good for the body regardless paired with a lot of running! If you don’t mind me asking how much do you typically run? And good luck with the academy as well!

Rock Island PD in Illinois has an initial obstacle course that gets you in the door. You fail that, your application is tossed. Just completed that portion along with the written test, waiting for results but confident that I passed that with flying colors. Thank you for this!

Nice mirror check when the pedestrian walked past. Situational awareness - it WILL save your life. I strongly agree with getting a degree that has nothing immediately obvious to do with police work. The reality is that policing is not for everyone. No matter how committed a person might be, the amount of insane stuff you'll see every day simply isn't for everyone. Have something to fall back on as a second choice if you decide after a couple of years that policing isn't for you. Once you've completed your application form, make a pile of copies. When the PD "accidentally loses" your application you can simply deliver another one the same day. Shows initiative and perseverance.

I know a couple, both were police officers. One was a street cop, the other was police forensic investigator. Both got medically disabled during employment and both were under 40. While they got disability, always consider what you may do after law enforcement. You never know when you will be injured, something happens where you suddenly need to change careers. If not law enforcement, what motivates you or makes you a lot of money so you can retire comfortably.

I guess Southern Ohio is just different. I contacted the main instructor and he said "Sure" gave me and some others a date and time to do the physical aspects to qualify to even join. (14.38 1 1/2 mile run to get in , 32 push ups , 28 sit ups to get in) and after that if you pass the same day we go to his office and do paper work right there. Everything we can get done and turn in the same day was done. All we had to do outside the room was figure out financing with the CFO at the vocational school. Then drug testing and physical. After that we just wait then start the 10 month process. We start September 6th of this year. So super easy on my side. Yeah we have months and months to prepare but the paper work side and the stuff we gotta do was extremely simple and quick.

I was cleared of any wrong doing, and never made it to trial or was convicted. I'm trying to use Security Work as a stepping stone, I'm just wondering how much will the scrutinize that? Will they bring it up? I've never have gotten a clear answer from anyone, maybe you can shed some light. I dont want to get in their, then get accused of lying.

So I don’t know how is that going to look when they run my background. All the cannabis tickets has been over 7 years ago so my recent “trouble” is just the accident from 2021 being my fault and the speeding ticket. Oh and I went to a mental thingy hospital because I was suicidal but that was 2019. Can anyone help me out if I should even bother to go to the testings?

On the Military Service side, there are things you can do within your MOS that might help set you apart. Infantry? No one looks down upon being Ranger Qualified. Fire Support (which I can speak on pretty well) ha some cool stuff within it. IE: Joint Fires Observer, Joint Firepower Control, Precision Fires Course, AFATDS operator, etc, etc…. The point is Joe Snuffy can be a better whatever MOS than just the MOS itself. Also, don’t be afraid to work outside your MOS. Going to the CBRNE defender course comes to mind.

Man, great video. I love this channel. Its been a lifelong dream to be a police officer. Unfortunately i made some stupid choices as a teenager. No felonies just 2 misdemeanors. Im now 33, and grown up so much since then. Still have the dream but feel so discouraged. I have integrity so i feel like id be denied during the polygraph because i wouldnt lie. I KNOW any department would benifit having me on board but i just feel like they wouldnt even give me the opportunity to show that im no longer making stupid choices.

Thankfully, if there haven't been any incidents since, they should evaluate those 10 or so years of crime free activity and your career/peers positively and with a simple explanation of what happened and why, (of course lying isn't smart since chances are they have all of the information themselves,) you should in theory be alright. Expunging said offenses if possible are also on the table

They usually recruit candidates from jail to send to academy. Could you speak to the age factor? Fitness aside, do I even have a realistic chance at being accepted as a deputy (in your opinion)?
@freefieldtraining5 жыл бұрын
As long as your fitness is up to snuff and your state laws allow it I see no reason you couldn't start in LE at 46. Not that I would personally want to go to the police academy, through field training, and all the stress of being in probation and low man on the totem pole at 46 but more power to you if that is your dream.

In the beginning part that talks about degrees mattering, that's false (to an extent) in the state of Minnesota (where I'm from). In MN the requirement is that you have at least a 2 year degree (though a lot of Twin Cities departments are actually looking for a 4 year), and you have to go to a PPOE (Professional Peace Officer's Education) certified school, and with that you need to have a concentration (of some sort) in POST (Peace Officer's Standards in Training) in order to be eligible to go to skills upon graduation. Skills is mandatory for all officers in the State of MN if they want to become a cop. Now there is a way around this and that's if you apply for some sort of "pathway's to policing" program that some departments are doing now where you can have a degree in anything (as long as you have a degree at all) and the hiring department will sponsor your training to get into skills and to go through skills. But those programs are geared more towards diverse candidates (not just in race, but in diversity of thought as well).

in my area, it seems its almost entirely who you know. Guys at my current department have been trying to go elsewhere for years. Many with impressive resume's. But, it seems that people who "know someone" get picked up on departments much quicker than others. Our area has a test that you have to take yearly for potential job placement. I've taken it three years in a row and was offered only one, much lower paying job, which I had to pass on. Anyone looking to get into law enforcement, watch your social media. At one interview, the chief pointed out direct posts on my social media. Nothing bad, but point is, they look. Act accordingly.

One week? That’s insane and completely unreasonable. It all depends on your FTO. He could be very lenient on geography and understand that with time you will know the city. With that being said you should always know major landmarks in your city like: School, churches, hospitals and Walmart. If you know geography is in issue you should be driving through the city you want to work in regularly. Shop there; take the family out for dinner in that city.
