Easy Sync 3.4 Update & Sync 3 Maps Update!

Thanks for checking out my video on how to update your Sync 3 unit to have Sync 3.4 and the latest maps package! This video goes over everything you need to know to create a USB update thumbdrive using the CyanLabs Syn3Updater on a Windows PC. If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below!
If you're getting a USB hub error after updating -- your car is most likely a 2016 model that didn't come with a CarPlay Compatible USB hub. To get rid of this error and get CarPlay working you'll need to replace your hub with a newer model (affiliate links below).

Great Video - Just as a note for EU maps it can take almost 1 hour, NA is about 30 minutes like said in the video. Also please keep note of your log URL so if you have any issues we can pin point the issue easier EDIT: additionally, note that a MASTER RESET is highly recommended after the install is complete, it will fix 99% of problems people can experience

​@@saifaljaafreh technically yes, firstly CyanLabs does not support changing region, secondly depending on what region it may not fit, if you change region you will need to make multiple AsBuilt edits via ForScan, NaviUpgrade may be willing to assist further in this regard but i am not.

Hey if I bought a new screen and done the sync 3.4 installation on that. Can I effectively go back to my original screen that will have sync 3.0 or will the update override the vehicle itself ?

Thanks to Navi Upgrade for the walkthrough video, and CyanLabs for making an easy to use workaround for the updates. The download from the Ford website never worked in my car, but CyanLabs came to my rescue. I live in the UK, and I can confirm that the download for the EU maps took ages, and around 50 minutes to install on my car. Everything worked flawlessly, thank you! I've donated a sum of money to CyanLabs for their efforts into developing software that was easy to use and stress free installation in the car! xxx

Just update this afternoon. A little nervous with the warning that it might ruin my system but all went well. Extremely easy to do. Moved my 2018 Explorer from 3.0 to 3.4. Also upgrade my maps for 2/20 to 2/21.Thanks for this great video!

I just followed the instructions in this video to update the Sync 3 system in my 2016 Ford F-150. It worked flawlessly. I went from version 2.2 to 3.4. It woks great and the interface looks better.

Worked like a charm! I have a '16 F150 non nav with the older USB hub. (I use android auto instead of Apple car play.) It took about 6 mins to install. I did officially already had 3.0. 20204 installed from ford owner site if anyone has any issues why 3.4 won't install. Thanks again. This makes it so much less trouble to get the files and take the guess work out of it. You got a new sub. 😀

As this video is 2 years old the website and installer have changed a bit but this video provides enough info that it was not hard for me to navigate the newer version successfully. My Sync 3.0 was messed up and locking up, Bluetooth would not work etc... I am on the latest 2022 build and it is working as it should now. Thank you! The only thing I would warn is to be careful what you click on to download the installer. There are now adware download buttons all over the page. I accidently downloaded and installed something I did not want. I de-installed it and found the correct download button and everything went smooth. I suggest taking your time before you click and make sure you look carefully.

Super nice. Super easy. I had a scare when my navigation stayed on the loading maps screen for a long time. After a while I checked it and it was perfect I suppose it may have connected to my wifi and finished. But, very nice, very well executed application. As good as or better then any I have seen in my 64 years. Thank you. It is a fine product. You should be proud. I am kind of gushing but these days it is hard to find quality. This is it. 👍

I just did this update to my 2016 Lariat F-150, I can confirm fordpass still works, ambient light option is still there, in fact i didn't loose any function. All my forscan mod remained, though i had to re-put my climate seat button on the screen. It is important to know that the file downloads to your computer first then it automatically transfers it to your usb, i was stuck on this part because i selected the usb drive but it kept stopping after a few min because my computer's hard drive was full, i had to delete some stuff from my pc for it to finish downloading. Once it finished, it just automatically transferred to to the usb i had initially selected. It took me about 36 min to finish installing. Thanks for the video.

Great video. I have a UK Ford Mondeo Titanium Auto wagon late 2016 with Sync 3. I updated through Ford website and it still couldn't get my contacts up on screen. Used Cyan and bingo! Took about an hour once stick was plugged into USB, Just left it in on way to work. Whilst updating it displays a progress bar and cycles between three pictures. One hour later, a new streamlined interface, with all my contacts coming up, and F19 and EU 2020 maps. Still works with Ford live traffic update aswell! Obviously the new software has things like reversing cam etc in other menus, hardware, that my car was never fitted with originally. I am very pleased with this. Long live Linux.

Using for about a week now. Just two minor bugs that I've noticed. When starting car sometimes it takes a little longer loading up my SSD with all my music connected, and therefore defaults to radio. Soon afterwards it sees the SSD again and I just select it and starts playing from where it left off. Also another minor bug is jumping occasionally like if I had a CD playing but with MP3's. I play back same section and there is no jump. It's almost as if it's trying to do something in the background that maxes it out for a split second. Like I say only minor.

Big thank you. Before this method I was able to update to version 3.0 and no further updates were visible. With this one.. worked like a charm... however it took 50minutes (I did not see this information before update hehe) . 2017 Focus ST MK3, EU maps. @@eg2006 but it has. You put your information in Home tab. Pick region, than version (your SYNC3 version) and than current maps version. However i updated my SYNC with older version of SYN3Updater

Just updated my 2017 Escape to 3.4 with Cyan Labs. Took 90 minutes to download to USB and 30 minutes to install in the car. If you follow the instructions the install is EASY 🙂

So, I do seem to have a problem. Whether I'm connected to Bluetooth or through Android Auto when I try to make a call it switches to the radio and I can't hear the call and the other side of the call can't hear me. Same thing if I receive a call.

Worked great, took exactly 29 mins. I’m extremely impressed, I have a 2018 Explorer Limited with Nav. After the update my Bose sound system sounds sooo much better!!! The subwoofer sounds so much deeper and it actually “hits” Super happy, even my wife loves the fresh look. I’ll check back ever so often to see if any updates are available. Thanks again!

Just updated my Ford sync 3.4 to the latest map update NA 2 22. At one point it said that I could remove the USB drive and I did. It rebooted and was saying insert USB drive. I thought that I just screwed up the installation bur after a couple of minutes it started downloading from the USB drive. It took about 31 minutes to finish and reboot. Didn't screw anything up and now have the latest on my Ford Escape. Just a note, before doing this Sync update which I was already running 3.4 I had gone onto the Ford site and bought the map update for my vehicle (what a dumbass) needless to say it would not load at all what a waste of money! I kept searching the internet for updates and came upon this site. Glad that I did!!

@@rajkohli2623 I just confirmed that Sync 3.4 only allows brightness adjustment when the display Mode is set to Auto and the display is currently displaying in Dark mode. The brightness adjustment selection is available once the display changes to Dark mode, but not if you set the Mode to Dark manually.

My latest update attempt obviously didn't finish correctly. From time to time, I'd get the "update in progress" pop-up when starting the vehicle. I decided to give this update & process a go. It worked like a charm, although the update process did restart a few time before finally completing. Thanks!

Hey there, thanks! So your climate will still be on screen but the controls might not work completely in the correct manner. This is a bug that hasn't been squashed yet. We're waiting on an official fix from Ford 🥺

Hi Buddy, just upgraded my New Zealand 2017 Focus from V2.216280 with ANZ 1.15 to the new V3.4 22110 map ANZ2.21 . Was apprehensive about doing such a big jump in version numbers, but with CYANLABS web site and your clear easy instructions it went smooth as. Took 20 mins to upload. When it was at the stealership for its last warranty service I asked for the SYN3 to be upgraded, couldnt , wouldnt do it, toooo hard or dont know how. Honestly a 10 year old of today can do it THANKYOU

I've not been able to update in years, so I was very excited to see this. I followed the instructions perfectly and I uploaded my log files. When I insert the thumb drive, I get this message immediately, "Installation paused The USB storage device has been changed or removed. Installation will resume when the device is re-inserted." Of course, I then removed and re-inserted multiple times. In fact, I tried multiple USB ports in the car. Every time, I instantly get the same message. I'm encouraged though because this is the first time I've had Sync recognize the thumb drive. I've tried for years on the Ford site and my Sync never recognized the thumb drive. So, this is progress. If you have any thoughts, I'll give it a try. I'm happy to be a trouble shooter.

Just make sure that it's absolutely the same - like if one truck has nav and the other doesn't you would NOT want to do that and just recreate the USB. Keep in mind if you made this more than 6 months ago, there's a new version out that is probably the best version that Ford has released in a year or so

Thank you for this update. I have a 2016 mustang GT and my sync 3 System was lagging and very slow to respond to the buttons touching. Sometimes it would take a minute after hitting a button I did the update after several attempts from the Ford website which did not work and download the North America maps and everything looks new and flawless. There is a newer upgrade than the one the guy was explaining to download on the USB I guess because it just came out like a couple weeks ago and that’s the one that I picked the newest 3.4 upgrade which was one step ahead of his and it explains in the notes box that there are no issues whatsoever so I doubt you will have problems using your android but as far as android auto I have no idea, I do not have Apple CarPlay because I need that special USB box but I am fine with my iPhone Working on the system as it is

I've spent the last 12 hours straight and a couple of gallons at least idling trying to get it updated on a 2016 Escape so I could use Android Auto... I was just about to give up when this godsend of a video autoplayed during the last attempt... Thank you so much... Why does Ford need to be so incompetent with software releases?... I was a little spooked when I did the last step and was greeted by a "USB hubs are not supported. Please remove." message, but the ports do work, and I now have Android Auto! Thank you again! Great video. I'm curious if this is a general Sync update for all models? I have a 2017 Ford Flex Limited. I want to be sure that the climate screens, etc. will show the rear controls, and what is needed for my Flex. Obviously, a Focus or F-series wouldn't have those features.

I did everything to a T as you showed. Everything worked perfectly right up to the point of the install in my truck. I inserted my flash drive in and everything started like you showed except it never got passed the insert a USB screen where it shows the mustang and Ford symbol. It just continues to keep saying insert it. Everything is completely frozen on that screen. Do you have any info to fix this?

Thank you for the video. I loaded 3.4 into my 2017 F150 that has navigation but my thumb drive was only able to load update without maps. So it did take 3.4 but now I have no maps....lol I'm going to purchase a 32gb thumb drive and try to re-update it and re-install. Hopefully I can get my navigation back.

Thanks for the great videos. I purchased an 8" screen/ APIM w/ NAV as an upgrade from a salvage yard for my 2018 Expedition Max XLT. How can find out the Sync 3 version on this donor prior to downloading the upgrade files from CyanLabs as they require to enter the current Sync version? The cyan labs is a bit different now and so much other crap on that site. You gotta be careful. Really appreciate the tutorial and as always, good job. Sometime I wish I could read the screen, bit it's pretty self explanatory if you are on it when your watching it.

Great video. My wofes 2010 edge limited has never been updated. Can I use this to update it to the current version?

If you have a 2010 it will have sync 1 which is an entirely different operating system. I think it updates sync via usb and the navigation via DVD disc and my 2012 taurus had the same type, though I think Ford only has a limited number of navigation discs available. In 2011 through 2015 the edge had sync 2 which could be upgraded to sync 3. And in 2016 the edge and escape came with sync 3 only.

I just installed Ford’s Sync 3 v3.0 update via USB in my ‘16 F150 Lariat (had V1.0). Update went ok. But now I lost Siri. Cannot activate siri from steering wheel nor does it show-up on Phone settings. It just isn’t there. Siri was working fine before this update. Contacted Ford chat help to no avail. So I headed to good ole KZbin. I ran across your video looking for info. Love your video; wish I would have found this before doing the funky Ford update. Questions: do you have any idea what I can do to restore Siri? And can I use Cyanlabs to update to 3.4 for my 2016 F150 Sync?

Sorry to ask such a basic question, however, my Build number is blank on my 2017 F350 (US based). I followed your directions perfectly, yet, have nothing showing just the word "Build". How do I go about finding this hidden build number? I do show Sync 3 and my nav maps are NA 1 15, so, a much older build. Thanks. *Update: I chatted with Ford on their Sync page. I was asked for contact info and VIN. After a few minutes, the person at the other end was able to find my build number in their system. Will now try to download based on 3.0.19205 Build , however, Ford says the only update for my truck is 3.0.20204. Fingers crossed their build number was correct and that this new 3.4 works. The download to the thumb drive only took 32 minutes. Upload to the truck was 28 mins as advertised. It appears to work. Thanks!

Good Day Sir... did you every experience any issues with the 3.4 Sync LOAD? I want to do mine but i don't want to mess anything up. Same as you i contacted ford and they told me build 20204 was the lasted build.

The information is very good, but the syc3 application has a new version 2.11.8.0 where the new version is a little different than the one you used also asks for preparation of the Interrogator (logging) the software is looking for an xml file from syncmyride folder of your USB drive

First, Great Video, everything installed as advertised. I have a problem with the speed limit sign icon, its the European sign (round with red border) and I no longer get traffic info on the freeways (color indicates slow or stopped traffic, yellow, red...). Can I change something to put it back to the US speed signs. Also, my language setting is English (UK). I downloaded the NA maps and settings. Did I do something wrong?

I got a red screen when I plugged into the USB in my truck....I then unplugged the USB from the truck and the red screen went away, and started repartitioning without the thumb drive plugged in. The sync version I chose was the newer one than yours in this video. Sync 3.4 build 20351

I currently have Sync 3 3.0 build 20204 in my F-150. When I sign in to my Ford account it says I already have the most recent updates available and there's nothing else to download. If our systems are capable to updating to Sync 3.4 then why doesn't Ford give us the option to do so via their site?

I have a Mac and i had the same problem. You can download this software called virtual box, and download a windows iso image from Microsoft. (There are tutorials on how to set it up). Once windows is installed, you can download the software. You’ll have to google how to add a usb device into the os so you can download it to the usb stick. If you can’t figure out something, comment back and I might be able to help.

You'll have to use Syn3Updater every time... Not a huge deal since I've actually never seen a OEM WiFi update actually work 😅

@@ibitaRaptor I haven't noticed any issues since I performed the update. I've used stock NAV, Android Auto, Sirius, FM radio, Bluetooth audio, calls and everything works for me.

After upgrade, my voice commands on navigation quit working. I can manually input information via touchscreen but when I try voice it freezes up and after 30 seconds goes back to navigation screen. Any ideas?

Always Master Reset if you're facing any issues -- go to Settings > General > Master Reset

@@NaviUpgrade Yes, Yes I did. Finished half an hour ago. Worked perfectly. That said, like another watcher said, after I plugged the thumb drive it and pressed the scan for updates, it took 20 minutes before it found the drive... Then it took 31:35 min/sec to complete the update, which included the 2019 maps. The improvements are well worth it. Thanks for the video and the encouragement.

I've watched the video several times and it's a great vid. My problem I'm having is once I download the syn3 updater and go through the prompts and hit finish it doesn't launch the updater. I have a screen that pops up looking for an update and then thats it. Nothing else. It won't run or pull up as it does in ur vid. Any help would be great.

Hello I updated sync3.4 on my used Ford Escape but mistakenly from the official Ford website. Now things seems successful at first, but on a deeper inspection, I noticed my HD radio disappeared same with my FM radio infos ! is there a way to fix it ? I did a master reset but its not fixing the problem...

If you go for a spin while updating, be sure to disable auto start/stop first--just in case you hit a red light or something.

So i have a 2019 Ford Flex and see others updating. My vehicle is still in warranty so i'm a little nervous about it but if Ford isn't updating anything (sync or maps) anymore what choice do I have. My question though, if I update now will you still be able to update maps later? Is it a matter of just repeating this whole process or is there a simpler way?

Thanks for the video. My 2017 F250 has Sync 3, version 3.0 I tried to update today to 3.0.20204, it said it updated, but it still shows 3.0 on the About section in the system. Does this take a 3.0 and updates it past the version I was trying to install? Is this OK for my year?

Great stuff. I am thinking about update my Focus and Sync 3. I have two questions. 1. Does the SatNav works as it does on the default Sync 3 with the display on the board computer for the directions? 2. I just experienced that I have no GPS. Therefore my SatNav does not work. Did anyone had a situation like this one, and did this upgrade fixed it? I ask because I am still not sure if the issue is software or a corrupted GPS antenna.

@@NaviUpgrade I downloaded Syn upd2.4.0.0 today and it seemed to work ok- created 3.420351. Is that no good? Will my vehicle retain the Lincoln theme and splash-screen or default to Ford.. thanks again

@@elevationwakesports you should be good to go! The theme is coded into the AsBuilt of the device and shouldn't be changed during software rewrite, so yes, you'll keep your lincoln theme etc.

@@NaviUpgrade Updated and everything seems to be ok, but I have no startup or shutdown splash screen. I can see the screen illuminate when i open the door but its blank. When i push the button to turn the car off, the screen just goes blank, then off. Is there a setting I missed? I miss my Lincoln blacklabel start up screen. I see "background" in display settings but that only changes the color. The Lincoln "golden theme" is gone but thats not a big deal. Just hoping to get my cool splash screens back... thanks for the help

I read someone's review who said if you upgrade to sync 3.4, you have to plug your android phone into the car because it won't automatically connect like it did with sync 3. Also I am wondering if there is any way to update the screen readout to work like the newer models where, while you are entering say an address, instead of the whole screen going dark when you turn the fan down, only the area outside the fan circle goes dark.
