Dude, my MEPS could not have gone any better. I'm Navy. I had exactly the rate I wanted in mind on my way to MEPS. Medical went perfect and when I got to my liaison and counselor, they gave me the rate (AV) with a pretty good ship date where I wanted it and I locked it down. The $10k enlistment bonus for source rate was just the cherry on top.

So, to preface this, I just left MEPS a week ago and entered DEP for the Navy. When I went to MEPS, I still had a high score on my ASVAB from high school, and was able to skip that portion of MEPS. I scored a 90, so technically, I could qualify for just about every job in the Navy. However, one thing I learned is the Navy has switched to a classification system for all candidates, which puts them in one of 3 different classes; C1, C2, or C3. High scorers on the ASVAB are put in C1 and can ONLY pick from the 'best jobs' if they're available. 'Best jobs' being the most technical jobs like FC, ET, Nuke, AC, etc. Basically, you can only pick from your classification level as long as it has open jobs. A C1 candidate can only go down to C2 jobs if there are no C1 jobs. C2 can only pick a C3 job if there are no C2 jobs, and if there are no C3 jobs, a C3 is SOL.(Though its not at all likely) The only way to get out of this is by getting a highly competitive PRT score and picking up a NSO or NSW contract from a NSW/NSO Mentor and picking one of those 'jobs'.(and obviously passing the cut in training) If you're a C1 like me, and don't want a desk job,(like one I had to pick) take the ASVAB again at MEPS and try not to score as high. Which is kinda hard to say, because obviously you don't want to do bad, but I lost out on the jobs I would have liked much more because I scored too high. I'm only putting this in the comments because I have never found information about this on the web, and I would really have loved to know this before swearing in. (I was made aware of this after the fact, I'm now seeking a NSW contract before my ship date.) That being said, good luck guys. Get the job you want if you can.

My goal, regardless if i end up joining the airforce or not, is to buy a property. At the end of the day when you rent, you're just paying off someoen else's mortgage. decide you don't want to live there anymore? rent it out, have someone pay off the mortgage for you, and sell it when its paid off. plus rent is usually higher than a monthly mortgage rate so you'll be making some money off them, and once you have a renter you can refinance to get a loan for another property to live in. my parents are doing this, they have 2 rental properties at the moment and will be getting more after selling one off (its a large home, we made an addition to it so the mortgage on it is for a smaller home and when its sold it'll be enough money to buy 2 properties)

There are a lot of negatives to buying a house. It can be a good financial decision but it can also be a bad one.

Recruitment in the Aus navy lets you pick any job you qualify for with the aptitude test. Its just that some jobs take longer to get in if they're full. You can wait a few month to a yr or more until recruit school. But you still have full say in what job you want.

Huge toss-up for me - met with Air Force recruiter this morning - he said I would come in as an E-4. Navy recruiter yesterday thinks becoming a CT is a good fit for me, and they have great enlistment bonuses. My cons of the Navy are: I'm 6ft5.5 according to the recruiter today, and you're out at sea with no wifi for 6 months in a rack with three other roommates.

Side note with the jobs question, the jobs that have the highest percentage of getting it are Special Operation jobs in the AF (Pararescue, CCT, TACP, SOWT, SERE) as those jobs require guaranteed contracts.

I'd say that when it comes to boot camp regardless of service, you don't want to show up out of shape. Find out the physical standards before you go (how many sit ups per minute, run times, etc) and be able to meet or exceed the standards from day one. You do that, and you have half the battle one.

How is the food in the dining facility? How does the food in the Air Force compare to food in the other branches? If it varies from base to base or branch to branch, what factors play a role in this? But if it wouldn't be for that I woulda joined the Navy, just for the simple fact that I love the ocean, swimming, diving and of corse the traveling.

you forgot the LOA inbetween the LOC and LOR (usually not given). LOA can be confusing because it can mean letter of accomplishment (which is good) or letter of admonishment (which is bad). One of the things about the Air Force is they are very big on paperwork trails because it's used later on to show patterns of behavior
