"Uranium in the presence of water will cause fission....." I don't think that's how it works.
@jb76489
@jb76489 4 жыл бұрын
It’s poorly phrased but not inaccurate. The presence of water slows the neutrons ejected during fission through elastic collisions. These neutrons are more likely to collide with uranium present thus increasing the rate of fission

@AtomicAJ74

@@iasimov5960 Obviously, none of us who were in the Nuclear Navy can go into specific details about the Navy's nuclear plant designs. There is a wealth of information available in the public domain; I'll give you the short-short version of how a reactor works. Water in a reactor acts as a moderator (slows the neutrons down to a speed favorable for absorption by uranium). The absorption of neutrons will increase the rate of reaction. Get enough water at the right temperature in the right concentration and geometry of uranium and you have a sustained nuclear reaction. There's a whole lot more that goes into it. Nukes spend months studying how and why these reactions work. And the engineering that goes into the naval reactors to make them robust and reliable would make your head spin.

Specific underway schedules can vary widely. Normally ships will go to sea for 10 days to 2 weeks each month for training operations in preparation for deployment. Extended operations away from homeport can last up to 6 to 9 months, and ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. This varies depending on the mission and type of ship one is stationed on. If someone is on a shore duty tour, they will likely spend no time at sea during that duty assignment.

I don't know why they like calling them "nuclear powered" because technically these are steam/electric powered ships. Nuclear fission is the method used to create the steam. The fission itself does not power or electrify the vessel, it's a way to produce the heat necessary to heat water. Uranium has basically replaced coal, but the principle is the same. Pressurized steam is the desired product to turn the turbines that either directly turn the propellers and/or generate electricity. Nuclar power is just a more efficient way to create steam than fossil fuels....but it's heated and pressurized water (steam) that turns the turbines.
