@toddk90446 жыл бұрын
Here's my take... A 12 gauge is a great home defense gun. I will use #4 buck. Why? Still pulverizes a man at close range but has less penetration than a slug and 00 buck. Even some of the older homes that have more solid walls I still wouldn't use a slug. Slugs have a lot of penetration and can still carry massive amounts of energy as they penetrate barriers. If one is unsure, watch some videos from Paul Harrell, he has some great hd videos and does some of the best tests to date on KZbin. To be realistic, to find yourself in a hd situation and a hostage situation is pretty slim, but that's up to whoever to assess that and make their best educated decision. I would also practice using different shots and pattern them to determine if that's what I want. A back up to this question is an AR-15 and there are some good loads either 556/233 and 300 blackout that would work great but is still lethal while having less penetration and no worries of that bullet going through your neighbors house. There is also some good videos from Iraqveteran888 on 300 blackout tests for hd. I like #4 buckshot for a shotgun. Hornady critical defense for my 9mm. Black Hills 223 55 grain pointed soft tips, which work great on coyotes, I don't get pass through but they destroy all the lung tissue and fragment, which no doubt can kill a man, especially with a head shot in a hostage situation and if it's just a robbery or home invasion, well there are 30 rounds to eliminate the threat. Don't get me wrong, I love shotguns and they offer a lot for hd, but it's pretty hard to beat an AR-15 with the right loads. Plus there are a lot of budget AR's out there that start at $450 or so and that's not far from having a decent shotgun.

@JoshBenware6 жыл бұрын
From my limited experience, I remember one thing that scared me the most...missing. my backdrop was a house that had kids. I wasn't inside my house. Whether it be a slug or #4 buck, or even .223, if you are unlucky enough to hit the window of a house because you missed, it's not going to matter. Dry wall is such a small factor to base choices around. Overpenetration through a barrier is more of an issue when you miss. I'm not downplaying what you said, but my highest priority is to get to where I don't miss. It may not be possible to get to where you are guaranteed a 100% hit rate, but I think that is what to strive for. Ammo choices can make a difference, but that depends on what the barrier is, and we unfortunately don't get to pick the back drop. An example of different barriers acting differently- go shoot a 4×4 with a defensive type of slug (like pdx1) then shoot it with a .223 round. The 223 will fly right through without a problem and still have plenty of energy. A pdx1 slug will barely make it through the 4×4...and yeah, I've tested it multiple times. Then you move to multiple layers of sheetrock and the story changes. My point is, worrying about which will overpenetrate worse is something that is so dependant on the situation and what the backdrop is that it's not something to waste time worrying about. Training, shooting under stress, pushing yourself beyond your abilities are the things that will help you to not have to worry as much about what will happen if you do miss.
@toddk90446 жыл бұрын
josh benware Not in disagreement brother. We all want to make our shots count, and it's nice to hear from others who actually know what their back drop is, but misses can happen and the less collateral damage, the better. We also don't want want our shot or bullet to go through the bad guy and keep going with massive amounts of energy. You make some good points, I appreciate your input, helps us all and makes for a civilized conversation.

I used shotguns to shoot up cars, washers, dryers, microwaves, refrigerators, exterior and interior doors ( both hollow and solid), and even a couple riding mowers. Needless to say, birdshot was fun only because it was cheap. When the targets needed to be destroyed, slugs, 00buck, #4 buck, magnum BB shot waterfowl loads tore the crap out of everything! Slugs and buck worked the best, especially on solid doors and the vehicles, but it didn't matter on hollow or even cheap exterior doors, and appliances, cheap birdshot did it's fair share of damage! However all the loads were fired from an 870 with a full length vent ribbed barrel with a full choke. Some real nasty rounds are the 3 1/2" 00 loads, 18 pellets a shot and anything up close and personal is gonna have a real bad day.

There are different types of chokes. A full choke will keep the pellets closer together, whereas as skeet choke will spread the pellets uniformly. There are many different types of chokes to meet the need of the target. A number 6 shot will definitely kill within 25 yards, as will buckshot, sabot, and flechettes, It is a matter of over-penetration vs knockdown, You have to be careful not to injure or kill the innocent ones behind the sheetrock or a neighbor through a window.

Breaching rounds are slugs of what is essentially metal powder and wax. They go thru a door or door frame like a slug but break apart into the powder so as to limit damage on the other side of the door (so you don't have a slug flying thru the room you just breached). Typically you want to attack the wood around the locking mechanism or deadbolt, making a figure 8 around the bolt with two overlapping shots, this allows you to easily kick the door open as there is no wood holding the bolt anymore. Hope this helped explain a bit.

would a short 12" barrel 12ga shotgun be too wide of a pattern for home defense if the invader was say 25m away? say just breaking thru your fence perimeter wall, could you shoot across the front yard with it or not?

Way too wide... unless you are running slugs
@HealthSupercharger4 жыл бұрын
I thought so because I saw s video at 11 yards 10m a 12" barrel makes a 2ft spread pattern. At 22 yards it would be double 4ft diameter which would mean that most of the bullets would miss a target at larger than 15 yards I think.

Why don't you guys use adjustable pistol grip stocks on your shotguns? Wouldn't you want as many commonalities between weapon systems as possible? All your fancy AR rifles have adjustable stocks yet your shotguns have the straight standard style stocks that come from the factory.

I got an old box of ammo from an estate sale. I found 3 yellow 12 gauge shells on the bottom labeled explosive do not hold in hand.. no other identification other than 2 stars on the bottom on each side of the primer. Does anyone have any idea what these are?

I like the way that first breeching round slapped that plate. That's a very nasty round.

870 20ga youth model, tube loaded with #3 buck rounds, left one round low, saddle loaded with slugs and birdshot. Everyone in the house can wield it safely and effectively, and with the red dot on top it can send a slug in a dinner plate at 50 yards consistently. Hate on the 20ga all you want, but it is the ultimate all-purpose short-to-medium range weapon. I use my 12ga for trap shooting; but the 20ga is the defense gun.
