The only easy day is yesterday... or so they say! Could I be a Navy Seal... hmmm! Totally, but for the fact that I'm an Irish girl. Yes that is why. Ha! This Buds Class thing is rather intense training though.
Be sure to check out the original video at The U.S. Military Channel: • Navy Seals Buds Class ...

Just imagine the level of sass ED would have after four hours of sleep in a week if what we currently see from her is her well rested and presumably friendlier state. Well I don't know about SEAL training but when I was in basic training in the USAF, we had a short class on Pararescue. These are specially trained for emergency rescue in a course that lasts 18 months for combat and medical care of downed pilots and are now considered equal to Green Berets and SEALs in capabilities. In the class or maybe I should say briefing one of us, not me, said to the Pararescue giving the briefing that he didn't look that strong. The man then dropped and gave us 65 one handed push ups. Counting them off loudly as he cranked them out very quickly. He jumped up and asked if anyone would like to try one. No on e moved.

Met a lot of guys who “washed out” of BUDS training when I was in the service. You generally get to go into another training program for something else but it takes a toll. You can just see how crestfallen a person can be. Almost no one actually makes it into the training with the mindset, “Oh I’ll just give it a try. Sounds fun.” Getting there itself generally consumes people. It’s your goal/ dream. You eat it for breakfast and ask for seconds. When it all falls apart, in large part (save for some injury or something) all you have to blame is yourself which is a very heavy burden to bare. Especially for the rest of us who have to hear these turds talk about how they were in BUDS once. Lol

When the graphic said they get about 4 hours total sleep, I got the feeling you thought it meant 4 hours per day. This is not the case. What it means is that for the entire five and a half days, they get a total of about 4 hours of sleep. Many sailors lose their sanity completely during Hell Week.

You go through regular Navy boot camp. when your about finished, they ask who would like to try for Seals training. You have to pass a lot then to be asked to go into Buds. No going home first. Only about 1 in 4, make it through Buds. When you want to stop buds. You pack your things and ring your self out, you ring a bell outside. Most, upon leaving, can pick what school they would like to go to.

That was just Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL school (BUD/S). Think of it as a course that allows you to matriculate into Navy Special Warfare. It's the *second* step to get into the SEAL teams. First there is the prep school mentioned at the beginning that is 8 weeks long. Then there is the 24 week BUD/S (where Hell Week, among other things, occurs). Then they go through a compressed 3 week parachute course that covers both the "normal" airborne "static line" jumps *and* military free fall (the normal static line course every other paratrooper in the US military generally attends is 3 weeks long by itself; the military freefall course is another 4 weeks and is usually only offered to *experienced* static line parachutists). *Then* the SEAL candidates can actually start the SEAL Qualification Course (26 weeks) that earns them the designation of Special Warfare Operator (i.e., SEAL). Then there is ANOTHER *26 week* course for special operations combat medic (for *everyone* , not just designated medics, in a SEAL team) before they can join an actual SEAL team. They spend a bit over a year and a half "in the pipeline" to become SEALs before they actually get to a SEAL unit. And that's counting from the day they start training *as* a SEAL - the time they spend in the Navy learning their first job and the time they spend waiting for the application to be approved and their prep course to start isn't included in that year and a half. So figure, even a guy who enlisted with a "SEAL contract" (which promises the *opportunity* to try out for the SEALs) and doesn't have any major roadblocks that slow him down will take about two years from the day he reports to boot camp until he joins a SEAL team. And yes, women have been elegible for about 5 years, but there are zero allowances made for them on account of their gender. I don't believe any women have made it to the SEAL teams, and the only ones who have finished BUD/S ended up on non-SEAL career tracks (there are other Navy Special Warfare fields, like the folks who work the small boats *for* the SEALs).

BUDS is Basic Underwater Demolition School and yes, they are not SEALS until they complete the training and are passed by the instructors. Some can complete the physical portion and the classroom portion, yet are not considered suitable for duty as SEALS. Like any military training, it is done for several reasons. Every basic training is intended to break down all your pre-conceived ideas about service and break any resistance to being in the organization. This can be done by physically exhausting an individual and/or by mentally convincing them that whatever efforts they are doing to meet the standards, they are failing (due to holding on to their ideas of how things should be done developed prior to starting the training). Over time, they are slowly told they are starting to get the idea of how the tasks need to be done. Physical challenges help the individual to become more tolerant of discomfort (cold, sand in private areas, wet, etc), physically capable and how well they are able to work together as a team (helping others, showing understanding of the others concerns, emotional support to the others in their team) and over time the true personality of each student is demonstrated. All of this is discussed by the instructors and if possible, they help direct those with difficulty toward success or toward the realization that their deficiencies may need work that cannot be accomplished during BUDS. Finally, as they near the end, those that are not injured (too badly) and have demonstrated the recognized traits that will help them become successful SEALS, receive positive reinforcement that they are performing well and seem to have what it will take to be a SEAL. It is a tried and true method of stripping away the pre-existing ways of doing things and INDOCTRINATING an individual into any organization or to perform in a specific manner (assuming there are no aberrant mental issues). I never considered attempting BUDS but met many who did attempt, some more than once. They recognize by the end that they are so much more capable than they initially thought and able to perform duties that no other individual would even consider. SEALS are the most talked about of the Special Forces, but many units of the other services are as capable for some tasks, but less well suited for others. None of those "Snake Eaters" should be underestimated since they are trained to fight until the fight is over and their training makes much of their automatic responses to being physically challenged, could result in death for the attacker.

If I remember correctly, one of the last tests is the prospective SEAL has to deploy from an aircraft into the ocean over 1 mile out to sea with full gear. They then must make it to shore and take an objective to pass the test all at night usually during a new moon (the dark moon). Sounds like the stories our grandparents would tell, “I had to walk to and from school for 5 miles uphill both ways in knee-deep snow.”

Well Diane, you could watch training live by staying in the Hotel del Coronado, in Coronado California. Which is near the US Naval Amphibious Base Coronado where the BUD/S training course is held. The seal's train on the beach just south of the hotel. You can see them from the hotel's patio bar. The hotel also is rumoured to be haunted by Kate Morgan who checked in on Thanksgiving day in 1892 and never checked out. She was called the Beautiful Stranger who stayed in room 302 ( now 3327). Sounds like your kind of place. There is nothing more fun then swimming laps and drown proofing in fatigues which is sort like Bronze Medallion training from Royal Life Saving Society which is need to be a life guard in Alberta, Canada. I noted Chewie did a perfect low crawl off the back of the couch so he may have performed in live fire training exercises before.

Keep in mind; recruits don't go directly into SEAL training. All of the candidates who enter BUD/S training are active duty service members. "Training to become a Navy SEAL is voluntary, and officers and enlisted sailors train side by side. To volunteer, a SEAL candidate must be a US citizen between 18 and 29 years old in the U.S. Navy. Occasionally, personnel from foreign armed forces allied with the United States have been invited to train at BUD/S. For two years, of seven initially planned,[3] members of the Coast Guard were allowed to obtain SEAL training, until the program was suspended in 2011. It's more of a selection process than a training regimen, designed to separate the ones who can endure it from those that can't, the latter being most of them. Had a friend who's son died during the course and to this day the Navy won't give him any specifics. They can be real hush hush about certain things.

1 female has completed the Naval Special Warfare combatant-craft crewman training. That was in July of this year. They are the boat operators who transport Navy SEALs and conduct their own classified missions. Their training is no joke, either. So far, no females have completed SEAL training, though. Granted, females have only been eligible for around 5yrs.

When I went to US Army basic training, they fired live ammo at us. They fired well above our heads, but you knew it was real, because you could see the tracer rounds in the air. If you don't know, tracer rounds are bullets with a pyrotechnic included, so you can see their trajectory at night.

Navy SEALs aren't the only SOF unit here in the states with a notoriously difficult training pipeline. "Hell Week" is plenty tough, but every selection process has something similar. The intent is to make it so that everybody who can't make the cut voluntarily drops out of training. What's also interesting is that, aside from Hell Week, the other part of selection and training for the SEALs that results in a large number of dropouts is the dive training, because when it comes to the water people are more prone to panicking and SEAL training takes any and every problem someone might conceivably encounter during a dive and use it to try and make them panic.

SEALs are extreamly interesting. I have a friend that was in the SEALs following 9/11. He got married & had a kid, so bc its safer, he switched to the Marines when his SEALs contract was up. I never ask him about any of the stuff they did in the SEALs, but he will talk about training & show you pics. He said, severe neck injuries were common in selection, from carrying the Zodiac on their heads. Everything is done to make them work as a team. So, if 1 person wasn't carrying their weight of the Zodiac, others would get injured. Injuries are the common consequence in every evolution if you don't work together. Only a couple of times do you work alone. Part of the, what they call, "Drown Proofing", is 1 of them. They have instructors posted in & out of the water watching for the signs. Inevitably, most will pass out while doing the drown proofing evolution. They want them too so that they, "know what it feels like & know that a team mate is always there. That way they don't panic if they start to go through that while in the ocean." BUD/s, is only the selection phase of the SEALs. There's still a chance that they make it through all the weeks & all the evolutions, to not have a score good enough to make it into the training program. Their only options are to go back to week 1 or find a diff career in the Navy. I find it all very interesting. It was all very hush hush & they didn't really tell any1 they were a SEAL, until we killed Bin Laden. Now, the running joke that they all have their own podcast & write a book about their time in the SEALs. There are some really interesting podcasts with the SEAL that shot Bin Laden telling selection stories & all with his fellow Frog Men. And, many with the Captain Phillips Team.

Training is tough the video is right about pre training and not getting injuries. Like any training have to start small and increase overtime that will build up the body to handle most situations. It's better to be trained so when you get put in the real dangerous situations you know what to do to protect yourself and help others. As you can see its not for everybody and there's nothing wrong with that. it's hard to stay in shape over a lifetime. I like that you have lifeguard training, always good to know how to swim. you sneezed, bless you. we all have different talents so everybody does contribute to the world. Enjoyed your outlook on the video.

It's live fire. All the bullets are aimed to go near the recruits without hitting them. Proving that the Navy trains the best sharp shooters in the world. The explosions are also live explosions, although tamed down a little. The point is to simulate a war time environment.

If you ever get a chance, and if they do this there. Check with a dive shop about doing an introduction to diving class. You might call it something else there. Sometimes it’s free and sometimes it cost about $20 - $30. It’s generally done in a swimming pool, though I have heard of it being fine in a lake or ocean in a shallow cove. They do a little class then you get to put on the gear and jump in. It’s very controlled for safety’s sake but it’s soooo much fun. I actually did the introduction class just to make sure I’d be able to tolerate breathing off a regulator or wearing the mask. Some people have problems and can’t dive because of it. Luckily for me, it only cemented the idea of getting certified. Diving 10 years now, but only off the coast of California, one day I’ll make it some place tropical. 🤑. But if not, I’m ok with that.

BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/Seal) course was shown for about the last 40% of this video. I believe the Discovery Channel recorded and broadcast the "Hell Week" portion of BUD/S in the 1990s. I'm sure there's a DVD/Blu-Ray set available on Amazon. On a personal note, during WW2 my father commanded a unit of the USA Navy's predecessor to the Seals, the U)nderwater D)emolition T)eams. These men swam from offshore boats to Japanese-held beaches to attach demolition explosives onto natural and man-made obstacles to Marine Corp landing craft. Afterwards, they swam back out to sea for pick up. My Dad was bat-shite f@@king crazy!

Hi Diane. To the best of my knowledge, this is still true. There are no female SEALS. There is a prep program you must qualify for. Then if you get through that you have earned the right to try and qualify for entry into BUDS. A few women have gotten as far as passing the requirements to enter the pre Buds program, but to date none have passed that and moved on to BUDS.

I grew up in Coronado, where SEAL Team 1 is based, and have known several SEALs and sailors who got into BUDS but washed out. The whole training is six super grueling months and many people drop out prior to the famous Hell Week, which is week 7 I think. SEALs that have been on missions will all tell you immediately that they owe their lives to the training. Not just Hell Week but all of it. They are mentally and physically some of the toughest people on Earth, but in my experience IRL they tend to be surprisingly chill.

Hi Diane. I had a chance to speak with SEAL instructor once and asked him how tough Buds training was. He kind of laughed and said that it was all mental. If you have the right mental attitude the instructors will get you through Buds training. He also told me the toughest part for a new SEAL is not the training but his first SEAL team he is assigned too after training. That's where the rubber meets the road. In fact he had a young 22 year brand new SEAL who got hooked up with a 28 year old woman. Apparently this woman was messing with his head and it was affecting his job as a SEAL. The young man was told to basically get his act together or he would be out of the SEALs and sent back to the fleet.
