Some of the most dangerous men on earth are saying "we need help" Let that sink in. I'm just a regular veteran though, I have nothing but respect for those in special operations. May the Seals get what they need to overcome this.

I'm from Coronado and have had many SEAL friends over the years. I am also a former 10 year AFSOC operator. One observation that I've seen over and over is that as SEALS (and other groups, Delta, SF, Rangers, CCT) get older, as their down range deployments become more frequent, their bodies begin to break down, physically. Injuries, stress fractures, fractured disks, etc, etc, really starts to take a toll. I've been a proponent for a 15 year retirement program for special operators for years and think there is real data to make that a realistic choice. Many guys just can't physically make it to 20 years and then have to rely on VA disability which is a fraction of an active duty retirement.
@jfkst1
@jfkst1 5 жыл бұрын
This is a completely overlooked issue that hurts retention IMO. SOF operators brutalize their bodies. Making it 20 years in an operational capacity is a challenge. I was an 18C from 2007 to 2012 and from training alone I had a herniated disc in my back, torn labrum in my shoulder, and a broken ankle. It is common and expected to perform with injuries plenty of other guys dealt with worse. Physical health was a major factor in leaving the Army. I simply couldn't perform at the same level and pain management was becoming problematic.

Ya know, I can understand the concern, but it bothers me that the commander that was speaking was framing it as a personal betrayal. I lost a half dozen friends to OD's before I finished my first year away at college. Drug addiction is not a single premeditated choice. It typically starts with either a legal prescription or self medicating for an immediate problem, whether it's physical pain or mental distress. I think it is sad that men who are operating at the highest levels of the military are being judged for drug abuse. Especially in this day and age, when we know so much more about drug addiction and the circumstances that drive it. I would think this story could be used for the much better purpose of pointing out that even the most respected and arguably, disciplined, members of our country are struggling with this problem. Which should allow people to reconsider this notion of punishing drug use and trying to treat it. I don't want to see any of these men get arrested, go to jail or even pay a fine, and I especially don't want it to follow them around the rest of their lives. These people deserve help, not our judgment and indignation.

"How can you decide to do drugs. How can you do that to us?" - What an incredibly ignorant statement. Why would young men who endure many injuries, crippling anxiety, stress or PTSD, war injuries, watching their friends die and maimed do drugs? Gee, it's a mystery. - This guy reminds me of my stepfather who kicked his 16 yr old out of his house for smoking pot, while he was a 2-3 martini a night drinker.

I love how they ask, why do these guys use drugs? The same reason the general population uses them. Tons of different reasons... People use drugs for all sorts of issues from having fun, to psychological issues, to pressure and stress, to just plain old stupidity, to other addictions that blah blah blah. Lots of people like using drugs. These are just guys who signed up to be soldiers. It's not like they are from another planet. Yeah, they have some special skills blah blah blah. They are still human DNA and harder drugs they may like them and they may use them regardless of consequences. I mean, is it really a surprise that guys generally in their mid-20s are using drugs? Especially guys with high testosterone who tend to have huge egos. And yes, I know a handful of seals personally and they are all what the general population would consider egomaniacs. There are also many other things including intelligent, fit, committed Etc.

In my experience with fellow veterans they get done with the mission set, go home and find themselves either not wanting to feel anything, or, create chaos to work a problem. Sometimes, they turn to drugs to get the feeling of that “high” they were getting in operational status. Some of course never turn to substances and some do. When they do they generally have addictive type, obsessive personality types and are their own worst critic. It can be a dangerous situation. Doesn’t make them bad guys, they are just stuck in an unfortunate situation. That fight or flight being engaged all the time does have some serious repercussions.

About 15 years ago or so the Navy SEALS took the decision to be engaged in intensive exposure in the media. Before those times they were vehemently against it whilst other branches were open or moderately open to it. And ever since the SEALS came out in the open, I noticed how childish, immature, selfish and aggressive they are. I blame the leadership. From experience the truth is that Army leadership is slightly more forgiving and communicate a little better, which results in soldiers feeling less pushed to the edge.

Guys, we love you. You don't need to be super heroes or super human; just do your best. Drugs make you weaker in every way. They will hurt you, your family, your teamates . . . There is no honor, courage or lasting help in drugs. When you feel like you need to lean on something, lean on Jesus.

Don't they have Special Forces Operating Units on some sort of stims for long missions? I mean, they have certain reconnaissance pilots on stims. I suppose the administration and control of the doses should allow for units to recuperate and reach neuro-chemical (and physical) homeostasis after some rest. Hitler had his troops on pervatin (methamphetamines) and they clearly had an advantage although he made the mistake of not allowing them to rest by alternating regiments. Special Ops Units are on short spurt missions that will probably not have them experience burnout from being awake for a few days at a time and possibly without food. There is, without a doubt, some performance advantages to some drugs although they should not be allowed to use them for recreational purposes if on active duty. I abstain from drinking coffee when training for a 5k and the day that I use it is only on race day. I regularly break my PRs on race days when drinking coffee. But this is not the Olympics, peoples lives are at stake so I imagine that any drug taken during an operation, and maybe even any supplementation building up to it (EPO and steroids), may be reasonable as long as a soldiers health is not permanently compromised. I dunno.

I have no respect for these individuals at all. I'm not condoning drug use in any way shape or form but going outside of the chain of command to air the dirty laundry against your fellow and former team members is an affront to everyone who's taking the oath and put on the uniform. You're not even man enough to let them see your face and hear your words I believe that's pretty much the definition of a coward when you're hiding casting stones.

When I was in BUDs my roommate showed me where other guys buried their steroids out on the beach. Literally there were dozens of rocks with different markings that people had buried their drugs under. He pointed at a couple of symbols and said those rocks are available. Even offered to sell me a few if I "forgot to bring mine." Best laugh I had the whole time.

In the United States military, modafinil has been approved for use on certain Air Force missions, and it is being investigated for other uses.[18] As of November 2012, modafinil is the only drug approved by the Air Force as a "go pill" for fatigue management.[19] The use of dextroamphetamine (a.k.a., Dexedrine) is no longer approved.[19] sooooo...whats the actual news here?

Mr Magelacuttie Very true, heroin and opiates in general, as well as barbiturates, shouldn't be allowed to Special Forces. But off-mission, I certainly think they should be allowed marijuana and even naturally-occuring substances like coca leaf.

Could fraudulent medical documentation to enable the evasion of required drug & alcohol testing for national security sensitive U.S. Navy SEALs, Department of Defense personnel and other critical federal personnel become a potential concern? What was the value of the illicit assets received by the SEALs, and should the value of any cocaine and illicit assets be determined to provide a more accurate federal bribery assessment? Otherwise, could it remain a national security bribery blindside?

I have already stated drugs DO NOT belong and will never be ok on the teams. This is definitely a selfish and disgraceful action of an elite warrior. The amount of awe a man wearing the Trident inspired in me when I was 17 was stifling. I wish I handled myself better. I wouldn't care if the whole Seal Team Fleet dropped to 300 battle hardened E-5 to E-8's if it meant kicking everyone that used drugs illegally OR recreationally on the teams. I understand the feeling of narcissism and being "untouchable" all too well, but drugs on the teams is where I draw the line.

This is a problem where the culture is work extremely hard, failure is unacceptable, and there are insufficient natural stress relievers and time to relax. You’re making it sound like drugs don’t allow people to perform. Many times drugs can improve physical abilities. Why do you think many of the armed forces around the world supplied soldiers with them? Now people that have never done drugs, are the experts and making policies about them?
