This is not really accurate nor does it acknowledge the actual problem. Our ships coming back to port with minor corrosion and marine growth is absolutely normal and to be expected. The problem is that recently we’ve been seeing them go OUT TO SEA looking like that. That’s definitely NOT supposed to happen, and suggests ships are being deployed more regularly than their repair/maintenance schedules can keep up with. Extra months on station somewhere in the middle of the ocean mean ships that are in disrepair, crews that are tired and demoralized, and a navy that is overstretched. That is the issue here. Not mere cosmetic differences.

@marcplucinski8846 I think that was America. Their ships go on missions for at least six months, yet they can’t keep up with maintenance right now. Servicing such a large naval fleet is taking a toll on the navy because it's costly and slow. This has led to poor maintenance, as they have to extend operational times and delay scheduled services. They simply don’t have enough shipyards to keep up. The Chinese, on the other hand, do not have this problem. Their maintenance costs are lower, and their ships get serviced promptly since they have the largest shipyards in the world. This explains why their ships are everywhere these days. They now have the largest navy in the world because their shipyards are consistently free to build new vessels. As the world’s largest exporter, they naturally have the biggest fleet of commercial tankers. To believe they have tankers that can traverse the globe but lack a capable military fleet? How intellectually dishonest can you be? 😂

Having spent 7 plus years at sea on board US Navy ships, I think you missed a vital difference between the US Navy’s fleet and that of China. One of the ships I served on was over 30 years old, and as such was much more prone to corrosion than the newer ships I served on. This did not affect the war fighting capability of the ship in the least, just her outward appearance.
@robertw.anderson61023 ай бұрын
Not sure I buy this idea. During World War II ships were forward deployed even long periods of time. But there is one big difference Navy ships in those days had larger crews. And many members of those crews were used in rust abatement. I’ve read many statements about rush chipping duty. And they actually painted deployed ships to help fight rust. Crews these are smaller allowing for far less manpower to work on rust abatement. And rust abatement was not considered good duty. And I’m guessing the NEW sailor is less interested in manual labor. Causing the Navy to let this to facilitate reenlistment.

They could use image processing deploy drones that fly around the ship looking for rust discolouration spots, then spray remove rust with a rust removal agent and then wash, dry and spray paint the ship's surface in the areas where the rust was removed. This could be done at sea. If this is done regularly, then corrosion would be minimal. The drones could map the exact locations where rust is detected and the data points uploaded to the ship's central maintenance database. Later when the ship returns from a deployment, those areas logged can be further inspected by ship painting robots used in dry dock. basically every square inch of the ship's external surface can be digitally mapped and tracked for ongoing maintenance. This combination of drones, automation, and data-driven maintenance could revolutionize how ships are maintained, reducing costs, improving efficiency, and extending ship lifespans.

painting/maintaining the hull of an aircraft carrier during home port with, hmmm, let's say 4 or five three/four man teams: 1st week: Hey Boats, make sure you needle nose gun down to the steel until it is shiny. Put primer on it and then paint it. Reality: - pull up the barge with man lift to location; run LP hoses, get deck ape(s) aloft, tiny needle nose gun in hand - maybe done by lunch first day... - if you have a good team you have already primer and haze grey with the aloft crew.... - well, if ya' work by the "standard" you'll be needling away to where it needs to be about 15 - 30 min on the hull depending on size of ugliness (let's say 0.5 sqft) - USS Ronald Reagan (rough estimate here just for one side of the boat) 1,092 ft by 134 ft = 146,328 sqft (at least/likely much more) - do the math - rumor - officers have been to college and should have recognized decades ago that this is going sideways every time in homeport - in foreign ports we rarely do hull maintenance... - even if you have three barges or more - you'll be tripping all over each other week 2 or 3 (maybe even four): - well, depending on how observant leadership is and/or Boats'n CPO is able to "successfully" show that the "math is not working" - no more needle nosing and priming - spray paint over it - fun fact: spray painting will not cover up everything from aft to forward in time since next underway is likely in another three to four weeks... or sooner... consider doing this in January, eight or often more hours a day, when the wind is blowing with a summerly breeze (just lied here) underneath the flight deck and ya' spray painting, the paint running down on your hands, freezing cold... I have seen grown men weep doing this. hint here - you can only put two personnel on a cherry picker at a time... and that is already tripping over each other... welcome to the land, sorry, sea of ineffectiveness... and of course the attempt(s) to look good to higher ups - promotion points here after all... sand blasting is a bit more effective... still, not enough time... shout out to all boats'ns side crews - I feel you!

Yes, US Navy has a rust issue. But no, this video is not a good overview. Many of the screenshots are laid-up vessels in the mothball fleets, if not imagery of ships long ago sold for scrap. One key driver of rust in the Navy is deferred maintenance. Because US shipyard capacity cannot meet Navy needs; definitely, not the UG govt yards which have massive backlogs. In general, US has badly underinvested in yards and maintenance capacity, This is particularly bad in the arena of human capital; meaning skilled people, training and career pipelines for the maritime industry and Naval service.
