As an American I managed to discover Nazem whilst looking for Iraqi musicians for my school slideshow project about Iraq. And I have to say that his songs are absolute gem. I wish that I had discovered his music sooner. This absolutely slaps.

Nazem El Ghazzali died Oct. 23, 1963. Saddam Hussein El-Tikriti began to seize power after the 1968 coup and officially took over in 1979. Indeed, what does Saddam have to do with El Ghazzali? Nothing, I would argue, except that Nazem El Ghazzali represents a gentler time in Iraqi history, before the Ba'athists took over. Again, I would argue that Iraq, a nation created by the British out of 5 1/2 vilayets (provinces) of the Ottoman Empire has been almost improssible to govern with a strong central government, and every round of coups in Iraq resulted in a government more repressive than the last, Saddam's being the worst of all. I wish the Iraqi people only peace, and may that peace allow Iraqi music to flourish once again.

John Erlich, Beautifully Said. Mesopotamia lost its luster on that sad and dark day of July 14th 1958 when its system of government changed from a civilised monarchy to a blood thirsty republic!
@JohnJE1232 жыл бұрын
@@nigelflamers2706 The advocacy of republican government is truly fraught in a region of the world (i.e., ME/NA) in which monarchies tend to be more enlightened governments than the "republics" that have replaced them. :=(
