If you mean the *Atlantic* ie US and UK (and her former/current crown colonies) we were on the same side as Russia in WW1 as well. I'm not even gonna go into why the UK joined Russia in flanking the Reich, because that should be fricking obvious. But in terms of the US.... 2. International politics is about what's in the national interest esp in crisis. In the global arena there is no government system, no monopoly on force. Since the Peace of Westphalia there had been a sorta agreement re nations in the "west"/Europe, and some others that every nation is entitled to it's sovereignty but there is no enforcement, how can there be? The League of Nations (and after WW2, the UN) really doesn't do much more than regular diplomacy can in that sorta situation, it's just a way to be able to meet with everyone at once (and the decisions happen in outside meetings between the real power brokers). I suppose eventually NATO rose to be closest thing. In this way, international relations is *much more "realpolitik"* than intra-national politics where there is at least a shared system of governance, rules and some shared national culture. 3. So while we didn't *like* the Russian Revolution, and we're opposed to the post revolution ideology, there was nowhere near the level of opposition, threat and animosity towards the soviets that we had after WW2 when relations soured (because of course they did!) and Stalin had nothing in his way but us ie the cold war. Not only did the level of media tech in the 30s and 40s make soviets less threatening then they'd seem in the 50s-60s etc but 4. you have to remember the 30s and 40s were actually an all time low for "small government + rampant capitalism" in the US- After the Gilded Age and 20s was followed by the Great Depression, the US pendulum swung the other way (it's hard for us to see because even the most progressive were socially conservative) but compared to the US history up to that point, this was a time of big government, proliferating federal social programs, unions and government regulation. I think the Courts had to actually step in and hold FDR back at one point over his attempt to price set over the sale of a single chicken. FDR was amazing and just what we needed for the Depression and for WWII and he was also probably the closest thing the US has ever had to a socialist leaning president (he wasn't a socialist, just the closest we've had, much more so than later Democrats who get progressively more capitalist by decade ie JFK, LBJ Carter, Clinton, Obama or Biden. And We the People still elected FDR President a whopping FOUR TIMES. That is to say, the US is capitalist and always will be, even FDR, so obviously they were not a fan of Marx or Bolsheviks nevermind Stalinism. But sovietism was not seen as the threat to the US at this time that it would later build into -- except in the most far thinking, paranoid, vague ideological way, like keeping a side eye on them 5., while the Axis fascists were a *direct threat* to liberal democracy not just ideologically but also *had just steamrolled almost every Western liberal democracy/republic and took them over*. Not to mention concrete very real direct threat of Imperial fascist Japanese bombed us without declaring war. 6. and Churchill basically called us out at the end of his Beaches speech that if UK fell as the last bulwark against fascism and his people were naked starving and fighting to the last man woman and child with a stick, "the New World with all her strength and resources must come to rescue the old" (I'm butchering it, but oh! It's so good) . 7. Oh and then the Nazis declared war on us before we even had a chance to react to Japan attacking us out of nowhere . 8. Of course we were allies with Russia, but FDR and Churchill did not trust Stalin,they knew what he was. They trusted him to target the Axis powers ie flank Nazis with us during the war. We didn't mix troops (I'm sure we didn't want our troops hearing about Marx though I think many were already pretty disillusioned with communism, meanwhile I'm sure Stalin didn't want his troops being infiltrated by our culture and ideas). He didn't trust them either. They leaders had to deal with each other, for the most part the Russkies stayed to the Eastern Front and most of US/UK was Western Front or Pacific theater. 9.As soon as the war was over it fell apart when they were divvying it up Berlin etc . FDR and WC expected Stalin to take over eastern Europe and build an Iron Curtain cutting off East Germany and all behind it (which is what he did). To be fair, Stalin found out the US, UK and French had gone "BFF" and consolidated their 3 territories and it fed his paranoia - oh also WE DIDNT GIVE HIM A HEADS UP ABOUT THE NUKES. Some think one of the reasons we used them was to show clearly to Stalin what we were capable of now (both tech wise and will wise) to keep him in check. TL; DR: You don't like Bon down the end of the block, you disagree with him on aesthetics and politics, you don't like the way he raises his kids, you don't like his values, you don't want you kids playing with his. BUT when some nutjob in the middle of your block goes nuts runs out with an axe and starts chopping down people, and you naturally head over, then you see Bob had the same idea and is headed over too, so you make eye contact and communicate w some hand gestures, both of you focused and glad to have help on the very immediate high stakes threat and your families, and together you manage to disarm and restrain Joe and provide first aid to his victims til the cops and medics arrive. Then you go back to disagreeing about everything and aggressively ignoring each other.

Because poor colonists often sided with the natives & enslaved, colonists from different countries often fought against each other, and colonizers needed a justification for all their colonizing. Ethnicity, nationality, class, caste, etc. are all different things and race took the worst aspects from all of them and shat out white supremacy.

There's also how the royal family originated from Hanover, a German princedom, how Scandinavian lords had historically taken land in the British isles, and how England had a one point been part of the North Sea empire, with the personal union and seat of power being from Scandinavia, among possibly other things. In the build up to WWI this practice complete seized, however. In that way, it's surprising that the Nazis didn't account for them. Modern racial estimates suggest that Anglo-Saxon DNA could comprise up to 40-60% of England (on average) with the rest being Celtic. Wales and Ireland are difficult to estimate due to the nature of English (and Scottish in Ireland) colonisation over these areas.

The Stuart line was problematic because King James II was Catholic. His daughters Mary( with William of Orange) and Ann were protestants and became the next monarchs. Ann had no living descendants so next viable descendant was the Elector of Hanover. The UK throne became even more German when Victoria married Albert of Saxe Coberg-Gotha.

I've a lot ethnic groups in my heritage, many of them not considered white, and I suffer from clinical depression. I would be put in a camp fairly quickly. I showed my mom this video, and during the part when you were showing how the nazis figured out how to categorize someone based on ancestry we paused the video and we went over our ancestry and realized that neither of us had three people of the same ethnic group in our ancestry and she joked that by their rules we don't have a race.

The interesting part about this is how Hitler himself didn’t seem to care that much about it. Certainly not nearly as much as other people in the Nazi Party (and especially the SS). I know there’s one story of Hitler telling the SS to stop archeological digs trying to “prove” their racial ideas and that he found the whole concept of trying to “prove” it scientifically embarrassing. Hitler seemed to view it more as a propaganda tool. But he himself realized how insane it came across to normal people. And so didn’t usually try appealing to scientific determinism and genetics, but through “culture” and nationalism. Like for example, if you went back in time and 100% proved to these Nazi race theorists that genetics completely obliterated every single thing they believe, and genetics 100% proves race is a sociological concept, people are genetically equal, and there is no evidence to suggest racial genetics influences personality/behaviour - it might actually shake some of these Nazis who sincerely believe the dumb shit they were saying. If they have any integrity it might actually force them to change some of their beliefs. But if you went back and proved all those things to Hitler, even after you forced him to 100% accept it, it would not change any of his other beliefs in the slightest. It would literally not even put a tiny dent on any aspect of his ideology. He would just transition to talking about “negative cumulative cultural influences” of certain “ethnic and cultural groups”. And how “Nordic culture” is actually what they meant.

In Texas (where I’m from) there is a large ethnic community of Bavarian/otherwise alpine Germans that immigrated in the 1920s-1940s. There is also a large community of Czech Americans that arrived around the same time. I understood why the Czech people decided, and likely had to, move here, but I couldn’t parse why the Germans would move here, as none of the original immigrants were Jewish. The explanation that Nazi race propaganda considers alpine Germans subhuman cleared a lot of that mystery for me. I grew up in that community in a local Biergarten and I was always slightly afraid that our community ancestors were Nazis. I did end up talking to an “elder” of the community (aka the owner/accordion player of the Biergarten and for whom I babysat his grandchildren), and he pretty much confirmed it. Needless to say I am very relieved lol

I really appreciate your conclusion. There's a meme that goes around - you've most likely seen it - of two big red buttons labeled with supposedly contradictory statements or opinions and some guy sweating over the choice he must make. I recently spoke to a survivor of the war. He was one of those polish kids wo were obducted by nazis. Because he was still a really small child he can't remember really. But it was still a traumatic expirience for him there. Edit: You said in 11:56 that parents were usually shot. In his case his mom survived till the end of the war and he got to see her again fortunately.

There’s an absolutely wild book by Dr. Eric Kurlander called “Hitler’s Monsters”. It’s about the influence the occult and pseudo-scientific theories had on Nazi elite. World ice theory, Atlantis, Aryan dominance of other empires, and even folk tales were all part of it. Some of the high ups believed that werewolves were the protectors of German people from “Slavic vampires”. There were elements in the party that were trying to come up with a unified Germanic mythology, entirely separate from other beliefs.
