I didn't know that it was tradition for the groom's family to help pay for the bride's dress in their culture. How wonderful!!! I imagine that it makes a bride thoughtful in her choices and feel welcomed into her new family...
@NarYan29042 жыл бұрын
In my country, everything is on the groom's family since they are going to officially bring another person's daughter into their family. That's a gesture that means "we'll take care of her from now on".
@2Cambell2 жыл бұрын
@@NarYan2904 This is wonderful!!! My family's history has been that when someone gets married that they become part of our family, male or female. We don't give up daughters or sons... Sometimes in the past, a husband's or wife's family could or would not contribute. I got married, my father and mother claimed my husband, they considered him family (This was kind of a shocker for many people at our ceremony!) and then his parents equally claimed both of us as theirs as well. So, it was nice to have have both of our families, while we were navigating life.

Why is every dress on this show so tacky it's like they are living in 2007
@SK-qj8sm5 жыл бұрын
anushka mukherjee Because there are limited abroad!! I guess you’re Indian orgin and live in India- Fashon isn’t too important and the Indians abroad just don’t care what comes- as long as its Indian and fits the criterias is what we care. If its fashionable, if its trendy, its literally the only few places to shop for Indian wears- so we’re happy with what we get.
@4legs4paws554 жыл бұрын
The diaspora fashion style often - no matter which culture - is more opulent and “tacky” then the modern original origin country one. Due to availability the choice is limited also and when people want to glorify and underline their roots they tend to go over the top and try to copy memories and picture they have on mind which most likely is Indian fashion from some years back

dunno about the rest of South, but in Kerala Muslim brides wear lehenga or saree. Christian brides wear lehenga/saree/ or whatever to the engagement ceremony, but not for the wedding ceremony itself, brides traditionally wear cream/white saree or a white (western) wedding dress. Also, the Christian bridal reception outfit is a saree as well. Hindu brides wear Kerala saree for the wedding, as well a kanjipuram silk saree.

@Fazeela Rawood I'm sure that what's she thought but I'm surprised the bridal consultant didn't tell her it's not just not ok, it's forbidden. It's inauspicious. She would end up offending tons of people. I'm assuming non-Indians know white and black are not part of the zillion colors we can wear. Red is the traditional color for most part. These are damn common things to Google when you're planning for a cross cultural wedding. She said she pursued the guy and was very excited for an Indian wedding. Black is tormenting and scandalous to say the least. Even if there's a single design of black color, the bride can't wear it the whole first year, as per our tradition.

1) Its not your culture, so shhhh. Let us explain, India is huuuuge, with every 5 kms you’re entering a different language, different ethnics. North indians wear lehenga and spend LAVISHLY on their weddings. And I mean like blowing up shit crazy ass weird weddings. But south indians on the other side, like it plain and simple and very down-to-earth environmentally friendlier weddings. We don’t like to spend so much money on our weddings but rather do something more good. Like feeding an entire village, planting trees, just keeping our weddings as cheap as possible but at the same give it back to Earth. 2) They’re abroad, these are the kinda stuff you get ouside of India. Trend isn’t an essential part of the fashion in Indian wears abroad 3) The lady was going to get married to SOUTH INDIAN CHRISTIAN guy- who wear very simple sarees that are more silk based and none of that bold good-lord-I-lost-ny-sight blind lehengas.

"What about our traditions??" Uhh since when is it traditional for Western brides to wear black? 😂
@gothicyid3 жыл бұрын
watch say yes to the dress black is more in fashion nowadays
@angrydonutface74203 жыл бұрын
@@gothicyid I didn't say no one ever wears it, I meant that it's not traditional. In any episode of Say Yes to the Dress where the bride wants to wear black, the family is upset because it's not traditional, just like the sister-in-law here.
@Honeybear04882 жыл бұрын
@@angrydonutface7420 but in india black though acceptable at reception depending on culture definitely not at wedding by the bride or the groom. Unless the groom follows another culture and wears suit .

my cousin wore a lehenga for her wedding, i don't get why we have to wear a sari. :P
@LadyStardust2418 жыл бұрын
Nizhi Nugget In some places in India (like South India), a saree is just the traditional dress for the bride. There's nothing "wrong" with a lehenga choli, but it's just not the appropriate outfit.
@nishnug8 жыл бұрын
***** ohhh i never knew that. i thought it was a "have to or else its rude" type of thing
@rajeshg39137 жыл бұрын
Nizhi Nugget ....they specified a sari coz they are south Indians. lehenga is more of a north Indian bridal wear....on the other hand THAT sari def wasn't bridal wear.
@Kookie-zc3gt6 жыл бұрын
lehenga is mostly north Indian ,sari is south Indian, suits is Punjabi, mekhla sador is Assamese, etc etc is their cultural wedding dress, not every one wear lehenga

marie q are you talking about the Jews. Cuz Jews aren’t considered european nor white. There can be whites who are religiously Jews, but Jewish is also an ethnicity. Her roots are probably from Israel which is more Arabic to be honest than white. Soooo hence they’re really not white or at most I’m guessing mixed with white.

I didn’t find her sister in law rude, she was just trying to make a point and she felt offended because this person hasn’t done the littlest of research- but again, I don’t really expect another person from a different culture to know about mine. Its okay, if people are not aware, the mom was there to learn! She probably was just hurt because she feels that wedding is nothing like her culture- because Indian parents do their shit seriously. Personally I felt bad for the mom that her daughter couldn’t get married in her own culture. I hate this about Indian parents- always making it about them.

I am so grateful for the videos that help us begin to understand the Indian culture’s ways, as to what color is appropriate and what style is it is it appropriate etc.& even who pays for the brides dresses which is totally opposite as it is in America. Thank you for these wonderful videos❣️❣️

All the embellishment on these dresses are cheap and tacky looking. Definitely way too overpriced. Some brides who cannot afford much wear outfits with this kind of embellishment but with that price it’s ridiculous. Also the sari is not bridal at all! There will be guests at the wedding more dressed up which really isn’t fair on the bride herself.

I loved Rita in this video, she was so understanding about why black wasn’t an appropriate color, and I loved how she was excited about all the dresses for her daughter. I hope the wedding incorporated the Jewish traditions as well, not just the Indian ones.
@sandraobrien8705 Жыл бұрын
I don't see how. The mother said they'd given up so much already. In order to get married in the groom's Catholic church ceremony, Meryl had to agree that any children born into that marriage be brought up Catholic. It sounds like they're having a Catholic wedding and an Indian style reception. I think that's why the mum was upset and a bit touchy wrt why her daughter had to follow Indian traditions for the reception too. I think the bride's traditions could have been honoured in some way too and the reception would have been a good place.

On weddings you can't wear black because it's a traditional function. But a reception is more of a formal function after the wedding to introduce family to mostly friends and everyone. Also the second look is Navy, not Black
