I respect Bill Russell for sure. Probably more than Wilt Chamberlain because of his competitive nature, defensive hustle, leadership, and being the first I've heard to trash talk and play mind games with his opponents. At the same time i acknowledge that he played in a much shorter NBA playoff format and teams could hold their talent for nearly forever because free agency didn't exist. So he did have certain privileges to maintain dominance that later players didn't. But he also played in extreme racial tension where his own dwelling spaces would be ransacked to intimidate him. To still go out and ball on the court despite that showed his resilience and courage.

But the very first professional game I saw was Celtics at the Warriors at Civic Auditorium. I forget the year. My dad suggested I watch #6 on the Celtics, so I did. He didn’t score a lot, but he seemingly got every rebound that could be gotten and I lost track of blocked shots. I was hooked on him. I’ll say this about him. He is not the greatest basketball player of all time. That goes to Jordan, with Wilt a close second. But basketball-wise, I don’t think there has ever been a more intelligent player to play the game. Add in his work on civil rights issues, and he’s a legend. He, along with Arthur Ashe in tennis, were my athletic role models growing up.

People calling them plumbers and farmers, but they played better basketball than today's players. They followed the rules to the T, meanwhile, today's players can carry the ball, not dribble and travel 3-5 strides, make a lay up, got 'touched' on their jersey, then flop mid air, and fall down to the floor, hugging their knees. So its plumbers and farmers, versus today's divas. What an evolution. "They can not compete in today's NBA!" neither can today's players play in their era without violating all the goddamn rules in the NBA. I am happy that the greatest diva of all time will probably retire soon, I hope the NBA can recover back to its greatest state when LeDiva is gone.

The only reason St Louis Hawks didn't pick him was because he was black. St Louis deserve what they got...1 championship. Udonis Haslam played far less games, contributed far less, won far fewer chips, had worse stats, far fewer accolades (Bill Russell won back when the MVP actually meant something), and Bill Russel had such amazing accomplishments all while consistently winning against prime and inhuman Wilt Chaimberlain. Udonis needs to learn some respect for his elders and to not disrepect the dead. JJ Reddick set the bar low by making cowardly and false remarks about the past greats while being such a mediocre player himself with little accomplishments of his own. Larry Bird could talk shit cus Larry would back it up. You wouldn't talk shit to MJ because he would make you pay for it (and still does). But now, these clowns that act like spoiled brats with their sad media jobs do nothing all day but talk shit about the actual greats while sniffing Lebron's jock while he flops, chokes, whines, doesn't hussle, and underperforms and while they do nothing with their lives, don't give back, dishonor the history, and contribute nothing to basketball. There are good and hard working players in the current NBA that both respect their elders and the game and are trying to rise to the occassion, but the media, the shit talking losers that are overpaid and underperform and sit on the bench because of "load management", the lies on social media, the reffing that ejects players for nothing while having zero fundamentals (who even calls travels and carrys, illegal screens, etc anymore!), and players who choke and physically assault other players for nothing while they play like absolute garbage, all contribute to a tarnished reputation and alienate actual basketball fans that just want to watch fundamentally good and exciting basketball and see players that are good examples. The current NBA is a joke of what is used to be, and that's a damn shame.

Making a jersey number disappear forever isn't an honour, it's making that person irrelevant. When you see number X on any team, the number is the single connection between different era. That number should be revered and desired by players. Every kid would dream to wear the number of their hero, even more so if at the same club. When you watch soccer and the list of great players that wore the 10 (or other number) for a club, it is an honour to wear that same number. Every time you see the new 10, you remember all the players that were before. That's how you create tradition. The Montreal Canadiens have a long history of 22-24 titles and have 18 players numbers retired. Ask a younger fan now who was number 2 or number 10 and few will know.

0:21 Do you know what journeyman means? He stayed on the Heat his entire career so how can he be a journeyman?

Well you got to think THIS IS SOMETHING that was built up by the NBA Media they disrespected Bill first by saying that his 11 chips was nothing when the Goat case is on the table compared to Mj had all these dumb Jordan sneaker 👟 fans thinking 6 is greater than 11 😅😅they knew if you was willing to spend all your money on the shoes that you must couldn't count😅😅😅😅

I was a laker fan and had total respect for russell, he should have been more mature in what he said because I understand what he said but that’s extremely disrespectful. Without bill there might not be an nba

I remember UD on those Coach Donovan Gator teams with J. Noah that went back 2 back. I remember his titles with MIA. They pale in comparison to the Player-Coach Civil Right Leader who balled out with 11 titles. I lost respect for UD.

How can someone lead from the bench? The only thing bench warmers are useful for is keeping the seat warm and cheerleading

i understand saying “fuck bill russell” given the context as a way to motivate your team and get your head in the competitive mindset. if he had said that was it and that he has respect for bill russell it was just a way to get into the game that’s one thing. but to double down with the disrespect makes it a lot worse especially considering his age

Haslem couldn’t keep up with Bill Russell in Chuck Taylors. Hopefully someone close to him gets in his ear about disrespecting someone in their very line of work who paved the way for a bozos like Udonis Haslem to attain his wealth. Sad to see a late great be egregiously disrespected in such a fashion. RIP to the greatest winner of all time, Bill Russell! 💍💍💍💍💍💍💍💍💍💍💍

Haslem was only with the Heat for so long cause they forgot he was there then they felt sorry for him so let him choose when to retire he needs to not talk above his status he didn't even sniff the air the greats did he was just there as DWade and others played and actually did something with he Heat

Bill Russell not only paved the way for the NBA, but “black” Americans. He endured more than the so-called social justice “black” athletes of today. I respect what UD did for Heat Nation, but he’s are totally out of bounds for this BS 😡
