NBA Commissioner Adam Silver let it slip that they will “turn to expansion” after media rights negotiations. That means new NBA cities will be in the works as soon as next year. This is a look at who those cities could be including a mystery metropolis people aren’t expecting.

As a Canadian of course im biased but I think a west team of Vancouver would be great. Not only is the Vancouver Metro Area poplulation 5 times what it was 20 years ago but the city would also show interest. After the 2019 Raptors championship basketball culture in Canada erupted overtaking hockey for a good while, so I think that giving Vancouver a team would be a sure fire way to increase basketball interest internationally and also bring money into the NBA.

As a fellow Canadian from Vancouver, Grizzle was a fail, but they can try again. Dynamic of Vancouver population had changed quite a lot in the last 20 years, especially with high amount of chinese immigrants and most of them are young. Hockey just don't relate too much with this population, since China doesn't have a hockey culture. On the other hand, NBA is huge in China and there are a lot of amateur basketball leagues in Vancouver, I believe a new team can be success.

I can't explain exactly what I mean... but if it was such a great decision, they would have done it yeeeears ago. But they havent, because they much fear where it all could end up.

@@Michael-vn2jjat do you mean , if you add Seattle and LV or basically any of the locations he mentioned, they’re all on the west coast. EVERYONE there plays basketball, though.

The NHL team shows that, that's not the case. Local fans fill that building because it's 41 home games. Tourism isn't a real factor for the Golden Knights and it probably won't be for the Vegas Stripes or whatever. Tourism is a factor for the Raiders, where they play 8 games a year at home and the NFL is more suited to a destination. Local support is how NBA teams operate. Vegas sports fans are underrated, they show up for the Raiders, Golden Knights, and Aces. I'm confident they'd show up for the NBA

I mean if the NBA does eventually expand they can easily add both the Seattle Sonics and the (hypothetical) Las Vegas Vipers both in the Western Conference and move a team like the Grizzlies or Pelicans to the East to balance out the conferences, complete with a full division re-alignment and a possible new playoff seeding format. I also think 8 players is too much to protect for all 30 teams. I'd say each team can protect either 6 or 7 players, and both Seattle and Las Vegas are only allowed to take one player from each team. So, if Las Vegas takes Moses Moody from the Warriors that means nobody else from Golden State can be selected in the expansion draft.

@@cnelsonlv99 Seattle couldn't keep their team because of the arena. The arena situation is resolved. Seattle is a larger TV market than Las Vegas, has an NBA ready venue, and more clear potential owners. You're clearly a fool. You keep talking about tourism, but tourism isn't a major factor for NBA/NHL teams. They play 41 home games a year. This won't be a destination just like it hasn't been for the Kraken or Golden Knights. Local media, fan spending and attendance is what matters. Seattle just got an expansion NHL franchise for the fact that the arena situation is resolved. Seattle is the frontrunner, not Las Vegas. The most likely owner for Vegas isn't Bill Foley, and therefore they'll likely have to build another arena for the Vegas NBA franchise since the NBA team won't be a secondary tenant. Use your brain, think about the money. To me, the NBA will expand to Seattle and Las Vegas, and it would be after the next TV media deal. They won't expand by 1 team, the NBA had a lot of issues the last time there was an odd number of teams. (Also, Las Vegas has parts about it that are a fucking shithole lmao. As an old grizzlies fan and Vancouverite, you’re wrong about the fan support. They failed to secure any corporate sponsorship, they made bad draft choices and players then wouldn’t come here. Things are different now. I just don’t think they will pick a west coast team cause they won’t get tv eyes out East it’s too late out. I hope they come back tho

Vancouver should get the team as Adam Silver wants to expand internationally (assuming he considers Canada as international even tho Toronto has a team). Seattle fans can always drive two and a half hours to Portland to watch a game, but there's nowhere close for people in Vancouver to watch a game. It'll be a major success here now as basketball is the most popular sport + the population boom, but I don't think we have an ownership group who can afford an NBA team.

Who are your 8 protects from the Warriors? The obvious choices as our roster stands right now are Steph/Klay/Dray/Wiggins/Looney. Then you pick 3 of GP2/Moody/Kuminga/CP3/Podz, and I'm pretty sure unless he has an extremely impressive rookie season, Podz and CP3 are the obvious leave outs for the list. I don't really see how there's even a conversation of Looney vs. Kuminga for the last slot because both should be obvious protects.

Top 8 protected is insane. 6 at the most. So you can protect your starting lineup and 6 man but that's it. The 7-8 guys on any given roster are usually bad lol. If those are the best players expansion teams can choose from it will take them forever to get good.

That's the point. Expansion teams aren't supposed to come in and be good. They have to lose for several years and build through the draft. If anything, 8 spots isn't enough. Teams have 15 players. They should protect 9 or 10 players each.
@DammitBobby

@@daleb9834 that's completely idiotic. If expansion teams are horrible out of the gate they don't build fan bases. Look how successfull the Vegas Golden Knights have been for example.
