Bron played in the same era as him, but one key rule was taken out once he was drafted in the league. That rule was ultimately the hand check rule, and furthermore the NBA became softer once they started implementing more rules. That undeniably made the sport soft just so the league can make more revenue through the offensive side of the spectrum.

Kobe is a guard and KD is almost 7 feet… of course Kobe would say that 🤦🏼‍♂️ Sheed and Rodman certainly could if PJ Tucker made life hell for KD in the playoffs last year. Nobody is dominating KD though, as he showed he can handle that physicality in 7 gm series. But KD has a variety of skills that allows him to play through physicality (sick cross, off dribble quickness, pull up contested Js, elite 3pt shooter). LeBron on the other hand, I think Rodman and Pippen would actually lock him up like 55 to 60% of the time bc his game really is one dimensional when it comes to scoring. Much like Giannis with slightly better J and much better passing.

If you actually look at league wide scoring through time, you can see that actually the early 90s were way higher scoring than the early 2010s. The only seasons where teams average 101 points or lower per game was a continuous stretch from 1996-2015. That means most of LeBron’s career was in the lowest scoring years in NBA history. Recency bias has made us think he played in high scoring leagues his whole career.

I like the point on adaptation because it makes sense. If you play an aggressive style because your era allows you to do that without catching fouls and you bring that to an era that’s more foul-prone, you won’t necessarily be better, you’ll just see a bigger deviation between your offensive and defensive numbers. You’ll probably put up more points and assists per game because you’re not getting whaled on as much when you have the ball. However, you’re probably getting more fouls called on you when you’re defending or going for rebounds because you’re used to being aggressive and you fall for foul baits more often. You may even foul out of the game more often. So your overall impact on the game isn’t objectively better, it’s just different. Adaptability is a skill all great players have and it’s one they never stop demonstrating. It’s how they learned the game in the first place and you know what they say about greatness: you never stop learning.

Lol it’s not a skill thing, he’ was saying they didn’t let you dunk like that over and over in that era, dude woulda contested him and it wouldn’t have been a foul (unlike Jordan’s era where he took physical punishment but he got to the line every time). But wilt is right about how the game was different in his era, the nba did not favor individual scoring, it favored team ball and defense. So a lot of the things 90’s players and Jordan did, palming the ball, “backing” ppl down, etc wasn’t allowed in wilt’s era. Like y’all imagine shaq being defended by Gordon heyward when y’all think of wilt but that’s not how the era was, they were all between 6’10” and 7 ft, and you actually couldn’t back ppl down, they would have called offensive fouls. All of wilt and kareem’s points came off actual moves and shots.

Parish and Wilt are critical of Jordan. Jordan's team was a loser in the 80s. In Parish's defense, Jordan never won against the Celtics in any playoff game, going 0-6. Jordan only won a ring towards the end of Celtics and Lakers prime. In Wilt's defense, the league rules adjusted to accommodate Jordan's game while the league rules were adjusted to stop Wilt's game.

i saw Stephen Jackson on a show once saying Lebron wouldnt last in his era. Stephen Jackson was drafted like 5-6 years before Lebron and they were in the league for 11 years together. Anyone who thinks todays players are soft because of the way they exaggerate fouls must be slow. When you see someone bump Lebrons forearm and he goes flying just think about this: do you really REALLY think a slap on the arm would effect Lebron like that? You think it causes him so much agony that he cant go on? Of course not. They do it because they know more times than not they'll get a foul call because thats how the nba is officiated now. More foul calls = more free throws = more points = more wins = bigger contracts etc. If you took any "tough guy" from the 80's and told them they could go from scoring 17 points per game to 25+ by just exaggerating any contact they receive i guarantee they'd do it. 17 ppg guys make 25 mil a year. 25+ ppg guys make 40 mil and get shoe deals.

so the misconception in what you're stating is 5-6 years made a difference in the league. Early 2000s till mid 2000s were the last stages of a more physical era and it started changing the other way towards a softer era very quick so it kind of makes sense for stephen jackson to mention that.

The NFL doesn’t need Pat Mahomes or Josh Allen to be better than Tom Brady to sell tickets, in the same way the NBA needed LeBron & Kobe to be the “next” MJ to boost ratings. People who weren’t even a fan of basketball would come to see Jordan drop 50 pts, or watch Kobe win his 3rd Championship. A list celebs sitting court side at games made Basketball the place to be “seen” in the sports world. And because of this, there is more of a “prima donna” attitude now with basketball players more than any other athlete. You see all these big name players, constantly whining & switching teams, demanding high salaries then not honoring their contracts, joining up together on a handful of good teams just to chase championships... Wasn’t like that back in the day, and it’s stuff like this that takes the competitiveness, mystique & sportsmanship out of the game. You said it yourself: they flop to get more points & bigger contracts. So are players really “improving,” or just padding their numbers🤔? The Lakers had a period where they appeared in 4 finals out of 5 and won 3. Kobe was dissatisfied because Shaq was the leading scorer, MVP, & focus of the offense. He threaten to leave unless they got rid of Shaq, Phil Jackson and all the rest. From that point on Kobe was the man even though the team was losing before they bounce back and then started losing again. The last 6 or 7 years Kobe & the Lakers didn't even have winning seasons but Kobe was satisfied because he was the man.

Exactly--love him or hate him, LeBron was amazing. He's been amazing his whole career, even when he was still getting better all the time, and that's what the best do: adapt and keep getting better. Not only that, what these discussions never recognize is the nature/nurture question. I don't think it's fair to say this or that player 'would be soft', if he played in the past. Even thought it's definitely true that some would be soft, we can't really know which ones, because the way the game was played during each era shaped those players. They have developed and adapted their games to the era in which they played/are playing. A lot of the players they call soft today have really just adapted to and developed in the current league and its rules. If they had to learn and play the older ways, they would have. By definition that is what the best always do, and most of the best today, would have been able to play with the best back in the day, and vice versa.

Most, yes. But the game changes. I think someone like Steph would've been more like Steve Nash 20 years ago. Harden and Kyrie wouldn't have been nearly as good because refs actually called traveling back then, and didn't let you get those cheap fouls. Bron would've been great, but probably wouldn't be averaging 25 at 37 years old...because the paint was more clogged and he'd have to work way harder for buckets. On the other side, many dominant bigs from the past would've had to develop a deep shot, or they wouldn't be used as much. Guards who have no 3 point shot wouldn't even make a roster. AI wouldn't be allowed to take 30 shots on poor efficiency. Some players would be better now, like Reggie Miller and Larry Bird. They'd be taking 12 3pt shots per game. The game just changes. Overall, greats are gonna be great. It's just a matter of HOW great.

Today, this younger generation wants to drop the Ja’s, LaMelo’s, etc in the same convos at times with Kobe, because they “don’t know what they don’t know.” And when Steph’s name is mentioned?! They’ve got him in GOAT convos. Meanwhile, my father watched Jerry West & then the Magic, Bird, Kareem era. Comparing eras is tough because of the evolution of the game, training, nutrition, shoe technology, etc. Sure, the guys today are skilled, but they also benefitted from the earlier guys who helped evolve and improve the game overall. Great take my dude, however, both eras have solid points on the matter. However, the business behind the game of basketball and sports in general has skyrocketed over the last decade. Today it is all about marketing strategies and branding and less about the physical aspect of the game of basketball..the fan base is higher worldwide, video game sales are through the roof, players are much more athletic and talented and they deserve to be payed way more nowadays, and the rules have changed to fit this era and will always change as players are extraordinarily more gifted. Love the debate this topic raised, awesome work my guy.

It was more difficult to score back in the day due to the physicality but was easier to play defense. Now it is harder to defend in this new era, especially on the perimeter but it's a lot easier to get buckets. All things balance out at the end.

It doesn’t take too much research to know that eras are different and players are different. Therefore, it’ll be hard to know who would succeed. Just like Jordan said on the goat conversation, I never played against the other legends so it’d be disrespectful to say I’m the best. And to go even further not just disrespectful but also hard to predict because who knows if players would even be able to adapt to a different era.

The biggest difference I notice about 80s and 90s basketball versus today, is how much more congested the lane was. Seems like today, players just need to beat one defender, and then they have a clear path to the basket, but watch any of Larry Bird's or Michael Jordan's highlights, and they had to fight their way through multiple defenders all the way up to the basket. You didn't have the constant run and gun "gimme" baskets like you see today.
