Larry Bird was a once in a lifetime gift from the basketball. Gods! He had the highest basketball IQ ever. I was very blessed to have been able to watch him play live a few times. Never disappointed.🍀🐐

Above all, Larry was a team player... He didn't care about individual stats, he did what it took for the team to win... On another note, his court sense was phenomenal...He knew where his teammates were all the time as demonstrated by the insane amount of touch and backward passes

And I've heard he was a leader in the locker room as well. He made everybody on the team a better player.

I’ve been a Celtics fan for over 60 years, going back to the days of Bob Cousy, KC Jones, Sam Jones, Tommy Heinsohn, Bill Russell, etc. Of all the superstars they’ve had over the years, Larry is by far my favorite. I think my favorite thing about Bird, and very telling of his competitiveness, is the fact that he would literally get pissed at opposing coaches if they assigned a white player to guard him. He felt that that was a total disrespect for his game and took it as a personal insult - and would let the coach know - and would then proceed to drop like 40 on the dude!! Priceless!!!

Larry went to Indiana State and is our native son. We love Larry here. He may have went out to Boston but he was and always will be an Indiana boy.

Besides the great talent I'm amazed the human being he is, considering his early years, I know his youth was filled with traumatic events, and he certainly could have chosen a different path, how happy for him and us he took the right one

Boston wanted bird to wait 7 more days before he announced his retirement but he wouldn't do it. He knew that if he waited Boston owed him 7 million dollars and he said no I won't take it and retired. They don't make them like bird anymore

i was living in Boston during the Dream Team era and went to Boston Garden several times to watch Bird. He used to go out to the court to just throw baskets from the free throw line time and time again. He was just great to watch, when the Celtics had an unbeatable season.

I was lucky enough to see all those games. The anticipation was unbelievable. I live Ohio and subscribed to the Boston Globe so I could read about them. It was a wonderful time to be alive

I agree with you Mr D., Bird would adapt to whatever era he found himself in. Back in the day I lived in Calif and would go to a neighborhood sports bar and watch the Lakers play Boston. I of course, was the only female sitting at the bar watching the game but I was also the only one rooting for the Celtics. Got alot of side eye at those games 👀

Actually, the Celtics were 29-53 in 1978-79 and went 61-21 in 1979-80, Larry's rookie season. That was without help from McHale, Parish, DJ, Ainge, or any of the others who'd be significant teammates of Larry's. The 32 game single season win increase set an NBA record.

The truly great players all have one thing in common. Yes they had talent, but the greats have a unstoppable work ethic. And that’s the difference between good and great.

Acronym "SHIT" = "S"hip "H"igh "I"n "T"ransport. This acronym originated in old England, back when "goods" were transported by sailing ships. The sailors had to keep the manure = SHIT...dry. if the manure got wet...it made a stinking mess...so they hung the bags of manure from the ceilings and walls to keep the manure dry.

Larry would average about 40 minimum... larry would have to adjust his trash talk or he get ejected to many games in this soft era... you have to remember as soft as the league is now... and advanced medical staff... larry probably wouldn't have back issues... larry was cooking players in way more physical league with a bad back most 0f his career....

Funny, and great point. He seems made up. Only one man has every done what he did multiple times calling the game winner. Who have you ever heard of who does that. That's a great way to describe him. If I hadn't seen him do all of this, I wouldn't believe it.

Yeah, the stories have sort of a Sidd Finch-esque quality to them, don't they? Or like the stories that people in Bo Jackson's home town tell about him (one being that Bo once killed a pig by throwing a rock at its head).

Points are all well and good, but what would the overall stat line look like on average? 35 points, say 12 or 13 rebounds, 6 or 7 assists, 3 steals. That would be my guess.
