Larry lived for taking the last shot. He was built for it. Bird all day, all month, all year.

My high school team played his high school team our Senior year. Of course nobody knew then what Larry could/would do, but suffice it to say, we suffered the worst defeat in the school’s history (the record still holds). We lost by 68 points! 😂

@@michaelwduffy I just remember the game and the hour and a half bus ride there. At that point, he was just another high school basketball player in Indiana (albeit REALLY good!). Back then high school players didn’t become famous until college. But I will tell you this- everybody in the southern part of Indiana has a Bird story of some sort. And a John Mellencamp story as well (you should react to some of his music, btw).

I’ll tell you this too- Bird is like a god in Indiana. When he was coaching the Pacers, they had a practice court with a viewing window for fans just walking by on the street. A crowd had gathered and Larry walked in. SILENCE. Then everybody whispered in unison, “It’s Larry!”. LOL

That announcer was the incomparable Johnny Most. Check out the famous "Havlicek Stole the Ball" incident. I was living outside of Boston listening to the game on the radio with my Dad. (It was not televised) An incredible memory for a Celts lover.

If you haven't already watched the Magic/Bird documentary called A courtship of rivals, its worth every minute. And the Bird Gang will show up. I don’t think we can get enough. And the 1993 Dream Team documentary too. Incredible

Someone mentioned it in the comments but got some of the facts wrong. Bird played his entire NBA career with a right index finger injury, sustained from a line drive in a softball game, shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. Two operations failed to straighten it; he can bend it only halfway to his palm. An injury he had after college and already being signed to the Celtics. He stated he never had the same feel for the ball but went on to be the Legend.

We depended on Larry to pull out a win no matter what and he usually delivered - so many games were won with a shot at the buzzer by Larry that we came to expect it. Great time for Celtics fans!

The funny part is Larry wasn't playing new basketball, he was actually playing old school basketball. As Wilt Chamberlain said of Bird, he plays technically correct basketball where it's more about skill than athleticism. It's a harder way to succeed with. It's more about good footwork and IQ and less about how fast you are or how high you can jump. That's why kids don't respect Larry enough, they see the power moves, the high flying dunks and flashy moves, that wasn't Bird. It's the harder way of playing but if you're good and you perfect it, it's unstoppable and what's more, you're not expending as much energy so come the 4th quarter you still have a good tank of gas. You listen to players talk about Bird wearing them out and that's why.

Pat Riley once said if he had to choose someone to take a shot to win a game, he'd take Michael Jordan. If he had to choose someone to take a shot to save his life, he'd take Larry Bird.

And that, Michael, is the best answer to your question that there is. Love it! Bird electrified the old sweaty Boston Garden for so many nights and years. When he left the stage I could hardly watch the game anymore. The man spoiled me!

As I said on a previous Bird greatest vid, Michael Jordan's answer to the question (paraphrasing) "The game is on the line, who do you want taking the last shot?"...without hesitation, he said: Larry Bird! That answer, coming from one of the all time great players! Whadda compliment! Larry, Larry, Larry!

You would be incorrect. Pat Riley the Lakers coach said it and you are quoting it incorrectly. Pat said " If the game is on the line the player I want to take the last shot is Michael Jordan. If my life was on the line the player I want to take the shot is Larry Bird. Jordan has said tons of great things about Larry including Bird is a better small forward than LeBron but that wasn't one of them.

He backed everything up. He grew up playing with black men he was 13 on up . They even told him we think you could go far… Birds response was yeah but if you were trying…. They said we are trying we can’t stop you!

I think every time he told the other team exactly what he was going to do he was challenging himself. Like the lefthanded shooting. Crazy to think through the end he had to lay down on planes for away games. Sometimes leaving after a game to go to the hospital and spend the night in traction. He wouldn't let pain meds fog his thinking.

That "old man" shot was calculated, lethal, and almost impossible to defend without sticking a hand in his face or fouling otherwise. Larry had that shot before he broke his finger. Jokic shoots the same way. LB didn't really invent a new way of playing. He combined what he learned from the grown black men he played pick-up with starting was a kid and the iconic Indiana basketball traditional play (that's a HT from a die hard, born and bred Tar Heel). But he sure added his mental and physical toughness. Larry Legend was a perfect storm.

Bird mastered SOLID fundamentals and amplified from there. A basketball genius. Tough as nails. Unselfish teammate. "A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals." - Larry Bird

"If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley " The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy “Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan

Larry didnt just play a physical game, he played a very effective mental game as well -- his trash talk really got other players out of their game, especially because he always backed it up - like he said, Larry took your soul and confidence away - so you could say maybe thats where Larry got so much confidence, he took part of it from all the others he played against---LOL
