It's really sad how injuries derailed not just Penny, but Grant Hill as well. Those two not only could have been all-time greats, but the rivalry they could have had too. In a post Jordan Eastern Conference, they were easily the two best players in the East. Imagine those Magic teams if they had managed to have a healthy Penny, healthy Grant Hill, and T-Mac, which they nearly had.

I don't care what you guys say but Penny was my guy growing up. He is the reason I started to hoop and have a semi pro career. He was the only man I idolized after my paps. I had his shoes, have his jerseys, basketball cards, the book written by Backett. I practiced his moves over and over again after rewatching them from the VHS tapes. At that time everybody I knew wanted to be like Mike, but I wanted to be like Penny. Never had wishes for my life but one, to meet coach Hardaway and have the opportunity to sit down with him for an hour or two and have a talk.

Penny was definitely one of my favorites growing up, and even when he beat my Bulls in 95, I still enjoyed watching him play. I agree with Shaq. He could've been better than Kobe and LeBron had he stayed healthy, and he would've been a hall of famer. Had the Magic just kept Shaq, they would've beaten the Bulls again at some point, and Penny would've had a ring or two. They had a squad, and other than the Bulls, no one could beat them.

I literally molded my game after his and could go either hand as I got better, but damn ya'll just dunno unless you saw him in work outs or play live. I'm from Arkansas and back in the days of 40 minutes of Hell with Coach Nolan Richardson, my hogs used to play Memphis State. That's back when we had Todd Day, Lee Mayberry and Oliver Miller and Memphis State had Anfernee Hardaway. Some people may not know this but Nolan recruited Penny pretty hard and he almost became a Razorback. If he had, we would have won another national championship in one or two years. That's a fact. You'll never convince me otherwise. Anyway Penny went to Memphis and I can't blame him for that. It's his hometown. I can still remember when we played them. Penny was one of the most amazing players I have ever seen. He almost beat our three stars all by himself. He was so incredibly good, he almost seemed like he was unbeatable. Every time we scored and took the lead, he came right back at us. He wouldn't quit. Dude had the biggest heart and some of the most incredible talent that has ever come out of this area. He's a legend. I'll never forget that game. And I'll always be a Penny Hardaway fan. He was an absolute joy to watch play basketball.

I think we should factor this in the debate about great players. I mean the details about how they prepare their bodies. I think it's less debated and analyzed and I think that is a mistake. Lets take Michael Jordan for instance. Dude had several accidents that could have ended his career. His first accident when he broke his foot, many times he fell the wrong way when he played the Pistons, and that one time Patrick Ewing almost ended his career with a block that had him reverse in the air and fall on his head almost breaking his back. I think the reason MJ never had a career ending injury is because he prepared for it (see Tim Grover). As did Kobe. On the other hand, Penny, didn't. He relied too much on talent, and less on preparation. As did Grant, and others. See, this is the simple difference that Tim Grover can make. Kobe and Michael had him, the others didn't.

Penny was like merging Magic and Michael to one player! Shaq was the big iron club, but Penny was the Jedi Sword... ;) They were 24 and 23 when they lead Orlando to the finals in 1995 and beat Jordan & Pippen. What if...

That was when Jordan had just came back from playing baseball for 2 years so Orlando got lucky it was a super rusty Jordan on the other end or things would have ended different but that Orlando team was for sure great and fun to watch. So sad Penny's career ended like that. Too many what ifs in Basketball. Same w Grant Hill and Griffey Jr for baseball. He woulda been the hands down goat had he not been injured for half his career

@@robglobal1 Yeah, maybe you are right. But nevertheless even half Michael is not so easy to beat. And he was not so rusty as everybody expected after his break. After the loss MIchael wants to have somebody (Rodman) for the boards because he knows that Scottie & him are maybe not enough anymore to win titles. But who knows? So Basketball is a sport where big heavy guys are jumping 15, 20 years on the hardwood - not a very healthy sport. The real achievement of guys like LeBron is to stay healthy for such a long time.

@@Schlipsmut that is true even half of Jordan was better than everyone else but it did take him a bit of time to get back to form although he wasnt as rusty as we all thought he was gonna be. Lebron definitely is smart for keeping his body healthy...also luck has been on his side big time. All these years and he's been able to avoid injury minus a few small things but never anything remotely major. Look at Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway what they would have become had it not been for injury. Most likely both top 10 all time

@@robglobal1 they both definitely would be top 10 all time greats if they didn't have serious injuries that ruined there career's, neither one of em were stoppable when they played at there primes before injuries, grant hill crossed over and dunked on pippen who is a top 3 greatest defender ever, even Jordan had trouble guarding penny hardaway and Grant hill and that says alot on how great they are that even the 🐐 MJ had trouble guarding them

Penny got a raw deal with the injuries!...as a die hard Hornets fan damn I hated playing the Magic when he got there!...they gotta make an exception for him in the HOF!...he earned his place in history he's the only player that asshole MJ gave props to by wearing his shoes in a game!...if im not mistaken I think it was a playoff game!...
