LB walking out in his warm up jacket in front of all his peers and winning the 3 point contest. Now that is how you show others when you have supreme confidence in yourself and your abilities. Plus as the story goes walking into the locker room and saying "I just want to know 1 thing, which 1 of you is coming in second?" That is how legends are made!

I believe the real quote was, "Which one of you assholes are coming in second?".....many of Larry's quotes get edited when they are reprinted. Like the famous one after Game 3 of the 1984 Finals where Larry said, "We played like a bunch of women tonight" after that it has always been reprinted as "We played like a bunch of (sissies)"

Tho I am Olajuwon fan , back in our era everyone fear of Mailman. He is most strongest guy after Wilt Chamberlain and he cant miss from mid range. Funny thing is his mid range is better than Jordan. His only weakness is his clutch time tho I think Jazz lost because Bulls had more hall of famers superteam. Malone also have 10.000 pts more than KG or Duncan thats not human to me. Bird will always be my favorite NBA player. What he lacked in athleticism he definitely made up for in every other attribute a player can possess. Larry Legend ☘️
@mikes3827
@mikes3827 Жыл бұрын
You're right in your assessment, although I think Larry's overall athleticism was better than he was given credit for (before his crippling back injury, I mean). But then when coupling Larry's other superior complementary attributes (his anticipation, ambidextrous ability, fakes, passing and of course his killer shot), I don't know that anyone could stop him cold. And when all-time defensive greats like Michael Cooper and Dennis Rodman rain praise on Larry, that's telling all by itself as to HOW great Larry was.
@quentincrisp6933
@quentincrisp6933 Жыл бұрын
I think we have to redefine athleticism in terms of just speed & jumping ability because I knew guys that could take a quarter off a backboard and they were average. Bird was athletic as get up with his shooting, rebounding & sick passing. Magic wasn't that athletic (as you call it) as well. Hello! Look at Luka arguably the best player in the league right now. Another guy who gets no credit is Tom Brady! I'll take that athleticism any day of the week!🤔

One of the Boston-LA finals, I watched Michael Cooper trying to guard Bird. After one trip down court where Bird scored, Cooper, the best defensive player in the league, just looked at Riley and turned his hands palms up, like saying, "What do you want me to do? Larry Bird's been asked many times who the toughest defensive player he ever played against was, and his answer has always been Michael Cooper. There were other players during that period who were more athletic who's skill sets were as impressive. But Bird's well above average skill set combined with his unparalled basketball IQ made him as lethal as any player in the league. Like James Worthy often said, "Larry played the game like it was chess while the rest of us were playing checkers."

Do you know Michael Jordan' never beat Larry Bird in a playoff game.. in the last game Larry Bird played against the Bulls. With a broken back the previous off season with surgery. Double teamed by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippin. Bird still came out on top. Jordan played some of his best games against the Celtics. But Larry Bird got the important stat. The W..look Michael Jordan and LeBron James when they pass the ball they're off to the side somewhere. Larry Bird was dangerous even when he didn't have the ball. He was constantly setting picks rebounding making passes whatever. Michael Jordan and LeBron James go for individual states. Vintage Bird's my #1 pick on my all-time team. Besides numbers, 3 MVP's with 4 runner-up years, and scoring/rebounding/assist averages, and 90/50/40 years, and defense, he just made his team that much better. C's without Bird won 29 games, Bird's rookie year they went to 61 games. They fell off again substantially when Bird retired. It's a team game. Besides his world class individual contributions, he just made everyone around him that much better. Bird is the Wayne Gretzky of basketball, knows where everyone is all the time ahead of the play.
@coreyharrell9079

What you fail to point out is that Birds first year, they still had three HOF players on the team in Dave Cowans, Pistol Pete and Nate Archibald, Bird makes 4. Bird never had a team where he had mediocre teammates, that's one thing that he and Magic never ran into. They were always surrounded by 2-4 HOF players. The only reason the Celtics fell off was because their nucleus was too old and Bird got hurt and retired, you couldn't double\triple and quadruple team anyone on the Celtics or Laker or 76ers. Bird is a top .5% player in NBA history, but he also always had multiple great HOF players around him, that already knew how to play and win in the NBA. They were the standard in the 80's.

@Jeff Watts In the 80's the Eastern Conference was so much tougher than the West. When the Boston won the Eastern Conference Championship is was winning the League championship. Boston was wore out by the time the Championship Series started. Trade places. You put Bird with the Lakers and Magic with the Celtics Bird wins at least 7 Championships. Magic would tell you the same thing. Same in College. Bird with that 79 Michigan St. Team and Magic with Indiana St. Magic would have gotten Indiana St. to the Tournament but wouldn't have played for Championship. I wish Bird NEVER got hurt with his back... I mean how hard he played on the boards, passing in the half court, getting off a shot, quickness with the hands, solid in the post, automatic at the line, great at drawing fouls, great moving off the ball, and clutch while being able to back up his talk and could hold his own versus the best defenders...Bird just understood and didn't buy into stereotypes and just let fools be fools while not playing into the hype. The thing is when Bird lost he always was realistic about it and looked at 'the game' as 'the game'.

This is something most Bastketball fans forget. Birds was frequently playing injured and had to retire because it was no longer tenable. Perhaps if they were less damaged they would have more longevity and the discussion on who the GOAT is, would be a completely different story.

@plainsimple244 Жыл бұрын
@@samguapo4573 Yeah, it's the price of playing hard and giving a damn about the game you love... guys gave it all they had each night and improved, which is why the game improved overall... there's a quality of challenging yourself to be great at something; I can safely say Bird got the best out of himself but a back injury or any injury ending a guys' career is sickening... I just wish no player had to go out with an injury but could finish healthy and ready to end playing... very few guys leave without injuries, Joe Dumars strikes me as a guy who left without an injury, Jordan had the ability but didn't let go but went out on his own terms in Washington. Kevin McHale really gave it all on the floor, as did Isiah Thomas and a guy like Stockton really just ran until he had to walk and then walked off healthy... it was silly seeing Barkley end his career like that in Houston with a rebound/foul 3-point play... and Miller had his chances to win but the marathon beat him and people forget Dr. J had a little left but knew when to get out and Kareem could have played 2 more years but he left while he could still produce. Guys like Worthy, A.C. Green, Ricky Pierce, Eddie Johnson, Rod Strickland, Danny Manning, and anyone from like 1979-1991... that entire generation was great and made history and it's funny how they just retired and left quietly...a lot of great players just walked off quietly which was great ... most of these "role players" were great and would be superstars now-a-days.

100% exactly. It is hard, it is extremely difficult to explain to basketball fans who did not personally witness the NBA in the 80s, just how supremely awesome Bird was. At the time, he wasn't "underrated" or ignored, he, along with Magic, was The Man. The Best. Without the internet, social media, cell phones, Bird & Magic was perhaps the biggest sports story at the time. We older B-ball fans have an advantage over the young ones- I have watched and witnessed whole games in the late 70s, the 80s, the 90s, the early 2000s, and some of it today. Not just highlights on youtube, but live TV and a number of live in-person games. Following entire 7 game playoff/championship series decade after decade. And along with Magic and Jordan, there has been nobody like Bird. You really had to see the whole scene for yourself.

Auerbach an the rest. What a player and a team. Chief an McHale we're awesome.

I loved Larry Bird. He's still my favorite player. He was tall, not much of an athlete, yet is one of the greatest small forwards in NBA history. That meant the hard-work coupled with the will-to-win not Michael Jordon-like unreal, even for the NBA, talent.

Not only that, he made his teammates better and An unbelievable high basketbal IQ. Trash talking, but delivering. Luka is possible a new Bird. Slow pace, very effective, high IQ. The best talent we have seen in a long time. He's not a trash talker, like Bird.

When I look at the college draft, with every player I ask, “ does he have that it factor “. I men it. It doesn’t matter whether you led the ncaa in scoring or were player of the year, do you have it. It meaning , when you drive to the hoop and Ewing blocks your shot, do you back down or drive again to make home respect you. When a defensive player like Dennis is guarding you, do you say, “ I’m going to ruin his image “ ! When you’re facing a superstar like Jordan , do you feel we have. O chance or do you say, I’m going to mess up his day ! That’s the it factor and why many #1 picks are busts and #12 picks become superstars. Bird and Magic had that it factor. When magic beat bird in college, he had that ultra confident leadership and willed his team to victory. But seeing bird enter the nba, when he faced magic, he wanted payback ! Since the 80s , no two players come close to them as warriors !

Some great reflections there. I liked her hardness, he’s no none sense down to business approach, competitive through abc through. Yet he’s also obviously a likeable respectful guy - and in he’s older days humble too. Watching rerun VHS tapes of him in late 80’s two weeks after the games were my memories of him as a kid. A friend would get them sent from an uncle and we’d watch them Saturday morning while playing pool. I played cricket and rode dirtbikes but Larry transcended the game

You guys, this content creator and Larry Bird convinced me to go buy a NBA 2k game! Obviously I really don't watch basketball but after watching some of these highlights impressed! One thing I always liked about basketball is the (3 point shots) from deep or seeing highlights or game commentary when they cover a game where someone scored 6-7 or 8 (3 point shots) all consecutively! In hockey there's no 3 point shots from downtown and I think there's more X's and O's to basketball than there is with hockey so I'm buying a 2k, not the newest one since IDC about rosters..
